Mirabilis Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 I think it looks alot like Kunfu Hustle, and Crotching Tiger Hiden Dragon. It was actually suppose to come out last August, but I think due to budget they pushed it back a year. I dont really know if I want to watch it or not...but we'll see. Thanks for the post though Matt, been looking forward to seeing the trailer. Quote

Thanks for the post though Matt, been looking forward to seeing the trailer. Actually, I think it looks a lot like Bulletproof Monk... which also starred Chow Yun Fat who was an old master who teaches a young white guy the ways of "super martial arts"... except it was about a scroll, and not dragonballs Quote
*Kenji Murakami Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 That was actually fairly decent for a Hollywood adaptation. Quote
Hyp3rB14d3 Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Oy. They used the name "Dragonball" to get a bigger budget so they could make a crappy action movie with no relation to Dragonball. The bastards. And the worst part is that the movie is probably going to be very successful simply because there's so many Dragonball fans, regardless of the actual quality of it. I'm going to skip this one. Quote
Bio-Boosted Dude Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 ahahaha, i cannot wait to see this. i've been following it for quite some time now, and even though i know it will more than likely be terrible i'm going to see it as soon as it comes out in cinemas! the fanboy in me got really happy when he started saying "kamehameha", even though i know this is just a bastardization of the manga Quote
Hyp3rB14d3 Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Like Transformers... At least Transformers kept Optimus Prime and Megatron as the powerful leaders of their respective sides, kept the terms Autobots and Decepticons, and got the guy who voiced Optimus Prime in the cartoon series to voice him in the movie. Gohan's still alive, Roshi's middle aged, Goku's an unsure high school student who needs to be trained because he is prophesized to save the world, Mai is a dangerous villain, the Dragonballs were created by monks, and they have to be collected before an eclipse to save the world from its prophesized destruction. And that's just the stuff I remember from seeing that stupid preview once. Quote
Larz Zahn Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 dude they really butchered that storyline then.. yep im gonna see it.. sorry people, im not a dbz fan so im gonna enjoy this in a sad sadistic way. what a cruel world. Quote
Mirabilis Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 Watching this trailer really remind me of the first Guyver film. Quote
Matt Bellamy Posted December 13, 2008 Author Posted December 13, 2008 I think there is a lot of bad press going around for the movie, and after seeing the trailer, I can see why certain types of fans are against it, and some are wanting to see it. - Dragonball Z fans - This is NOT DBZ. Let me repeat that. THIS IS NOT DBZ. I dunno if some don't realise, but there was a whole series before DBZ called, get this... DRAGONBALL. It was a about a young kid and his friends collecting things called Dragonballs, and on their way, fight some big villians. ( Note that the japanese Manga was never called Dragonball Z. It was just "Dragonball" for it's 42 volume run. The stuff we know as "Z", started in Volume 17.) - Purists/Source Material fans - These people want it to be a direct take from the manga source. And I am sorry, but for Dragonball, that just doesn't work. It worked great for the Hellboy and Iron Man movies, but Dragonball is not something you can do well in live action, and make it successful. Honestly, it looks like the changes they made to this, were for the american audiences so that those who do not understand can feel that they are not being left out. That being said, I expect MANY inside jokes, or cameos from characters who couldn't make it into the movie (Oolong, Puar etc...) - Fanboys/Haters/Trolls - Honestly, they seem to have a problem with everything. And are usually the bane of any forum/discussion because they think their opinion matters, and that it is right. That or they are just trolling. People who honestly do not like these kinds of films, or are not Dragonball fans are fine. It's just the stereotypes listed above that really drag down the public opinion on the movie. I'm still undecided weither or not I will see it in the theater, or just download it... But I know one thing... my brother, who dislikes anime, actually thinks it looks fairly decent. And I think right there, the producers of the movie have done their jobs. Quote
*Jess♥ Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 I think they've done some interesting things with it. I was quite intrigued with the couple of shots with the really bright colours, it was like willy wonkas chocolate factory! but that's interesting because dragonball is pretty unrealistic.. and the style of this seems pretty cartoony like roger rabbit or george of the jungle or something like that. that;s a good thing because if they had tried to take it seriously they would have had epic fail. you just can't do something like dragonball in seriousness. so I think i'll give this a watch. RazorLaser Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 Piccolo is trying to destroy the world because he was locked up in prison and 'he got mad' hahahahaha Quote

And I think right there, the producers of the movie have done their jobs. The problem I have with the movie is not that they're not doing a faithful translation. The problem I have is that they're not doing Dragonball at all, they're doing a completely unrelated action movie and stole the names (but not the character designs) for a bigger budget. Quote
Salkafar Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 It's idiotic. Dragonball was not just a silly action series at first (well, it was, but it also was more than that). It was based on a very old and venerable legend - "The Journey to the West". They should have realized this and worked from that. There is an incredibly good movie in there. This... this is "Double Dragon meets Super Mario Brothers". And if you remember those smegfests, you understand why I just might download this if I have time, but otherwise none of my effort or money will be invested in this chunk of polished feces. Quote
Zoa-Supreme Posted December 25, 2008 Posted December 25, 2008 Oh my god...What have they done? I thought it was going to be an animated movie but....Oh god....OH GOD. They ACTUALLY managed to make it more shitty than other people would have imagined. JESUS! Wtf man?! THERE WAS NO F**KING BIKE IN DB! OH NO! NOOOOO! THEY thumpED IT UP! thumpED IT ALL UP! GOKU ISN''T WHITE! WHY DO YOU THINK THEY CALL HIM "GOKU" IN THE FIRST F**KING PLACE!? NOOOO!!!!!!! Quote
Shion Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 that is not Dragonball Z !!!! i have no hope for that movie. i will wait for Dragonball Kai. Quote
The Crimson Guyver Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 I saw it in an early screening. Lets just say I died a little inside Quote
Toku Warrior Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 that is not Dragonball Z !!!!i have no hope for that movie. i will wait for Dragonball Kai. Well of course it's not DBZ. The movie is based around the first manga series Dragonball hence why Piccolo is a demon in this movie instead of a Namekian. In DB they didn't know Namkeians existed until it becane DBZ. But, yeah. Like you, I also have no hope for it either. Quote
*BananaKing Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 The fact that its teenagers and what not, makes me weep for the future. It looks super aweful Quote
