Matt Bellamy Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 So it seems, someone else has decided to start translating the Manga. And since the Advocacy volumes were available freely up to volume 30, that is where they have started. Only one chapter up so far, but it is a manga volume chapter, so is 36 pages. http://ciaranhillock.blogspot.co.uk/ Please note, that there is a jab towards the way the Advocacy handles the new translations (on both the blog and credits page), but really they do have a point (in regards to expanding the fan base), though the Advocacy is free to do things however they choose. I mention this as I want people to be CIVIL as possible discussion on the topic. Yes, it was a little childish to make note of it on their credits page, but we can all be grown ups here. I'm basically just happy that someone has taken interest in the Guyver manga again, and it's always nice to see someone else's take on things. I mean, there are similarities, but plenty of differences as well. Though it seems the person behind it has other projects on the go, I can only wonder how far they will go with it. But more Guyver, is always a good thing. 1 Quote
Gazham Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Hopefully more people will come back to it. I'm still more than happy to pay for scans, if the seires is limping on at the moment, any contribution to sales will surely help. Quote
TricoBren Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 (edited) I'm surprised it's taken this long for another group to pick it up to be honest. I doubt they'll stick it out though, one man operations like that usually don't.... EDIT: Aaaaand the translation sucks anyway! Big brother! Big Brother!! *facepalm* Edited September 7, 2015 by TricoBren Quote
Matt Bellamy Posted September 7, 2015 Author Posted September 7, 2015 I dunno, even the Advocacy uses just "Brother" which does still kind of sound a bit awkward. Though I have been long aware of the way translators work, and have seen many times where other translators use the direct translation, or attempts to change it to a more Western feel ( ie Mizuky calling him his name, Tetsuro and not Brother/Big Brother). Granted, I don't read Japanese at all, so maybe just "Brother" might be more accurate than "Big Brother" in this case. As for someone else picking it up... I can see that it would be a daunting task... 30+ volumes if they want to do it all their way. And the way this one seems to be, is more spite than possibly just wanting to do it for fun/get more readers. Not the best way to start a project. Quote
Salkafar Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Advocacy doesn't charge money, does it? And yeah, 184's translation is a bit unelegant. Quote
Masamune Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 No offence but this looks more professional than the Advocacy translations. Better translation, typesetting, text placement, grammar, etc. Quote
Super Existence Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Masamune where in the hell did you get that profile pic? It's a beaut! I'm not sure about the translation I would need to see more but I think he has done a very slick job, I think his berating of advocacy is a little unprofessional but at the same time I can understand even though the pay thing makes sense someone will only see free as free and pay as pay. Little competition cant hurt and at the end of the day as long as translations are being done... I remember the day when there was practically nothing and it took me Drag and Maverick Guyver to get this on the move. I'm curious to know why there hasn't been any movement on Tankouban or new chapters. Quote
Masamune Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 Check your PMs, Super Existence. I remember offering to help with the scanlations, and suggested using a more professional type of font like Wild Words. If I remember rightly, this suggestion was shot down. Personally, I think using Century Gothic looks... well... cheap. Quote
Salkafar Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 I feel I should get back in the game. It's been ages. Quote
*Jess♥ Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 at the end of the day he is wrong. none of us have ever or will ever charge for translations. we merely make sure people are paying for the manga. whole different story. also, we tried for years to increase interest in guyver and most people just don't want to know. whilst it is true that increasing interest in a manga is good for the manga's continuation as it helps the publishers,,, giving it away for free was clearly not helping in the case of guyver. it took us about 8 years to figure that out. 2 Quote
*Jess♥ Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 with regards to quality....our current translator is a professional translator working for companies in Japan. so their translations are professional quality. the font, well just look at your manga. the font used in guyver is not handwritten, so using handwritten type of font to echo american comics is really not appropriate. The font used for guyver looks a bit like kochi gothic. century gothic is a similar type of sans-serif clean and gently curved font. if century gothic looks cheap then that suggests that takaya is cheap because he uses a similar type of font. 3 Quote
Cannibal Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 (edited) ...the group that did the old translation started making people pay for their translation or some other bullshit reason so they could make money. People will never understand how Guyver Advocacy works Anyway, I'm yet to read it. Edited September 9, 2015 by Cannibal 1 Quote
Masamune Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 How come there are two sets of scanlations for Chapter 184? One in Century Gothic, one in Comic Sans? Quote
*Jess♥ Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 the second version was done by Salkafar. Don't know if you remember he used to produce his own version with localisation of the dialogue. 1 Quote
Salkafar Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 Yeah. Don't remember why I stopped: maybe I felt - he said from atop his high horse - that the translations had become more polished? Quote
Guyver1 Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 I like the fact that the advocacy group does this. Not just for the scanlations, but the passion of it. While I think that having someone else doing it will only help to further the base of fans and brand for Guyver as a whole, it should also not be so petty and baseless. For someone who doesn't want to make money from it, there is an awful lot of mud slinging for no reason. At the end of the day we are all fans of Guyver and only want it to climb in popularity so it not only keeps going, but keeps getting bigger and better as it deserves to be. Quote
*PrimalNemesis Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 The cheap jab to the Advocacy was unnecessary and unprofessional. I will not bother wasting my precious time with people like this. My loyalty has and always will be with the Advocacy. 3 Quote
Gazham Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 Well, advocacy has been translating all this time while no one else has. For the small contribution, it's well worth it, regardless of what font or how it's translated. If some new kid on the block wants to make a jib, after only a small effort, I don't think it's a biggie. Thanks to the team that has continually put the effort in, it's much apperciated 2 Quote
*guyverfan Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 sounds almost like a disgruntled ex member who didn't like the pledge system, or lurker? how long before that paypal button on his webpage becomes mandatory before he has anytime to translate new volumes? Quote
Sully Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 It's one part of a single book. Until there is a lot more work done by him / them it'll not change much. In the end it's good news though, the more Guyver sites out there the better... but it could have being done with more tact. 1 Quote
Masamune Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 I agree. The jab at the Advocacy is uncalled for. Better to let your work speak for itself. 1 Quote
H222G981 Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 I can't view it. Says it has been removed. Quote
Matt Bellamy Posted September 15, 2015 Author Posted September 15, 2015 Yeah, the blog itself has been removed. No post on 4chan (where the hype for their translations started) regarding it either. A shame really, as rivalry can sometimes help both sides improve... but just because the blog is down, and we haven't heard anything, doesn't mean they are necessarily done. Quote
