Guyvr2 Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 My new monitor arrived this weekend and I have been spending way too much time staring at its big beautiful wonderfulness. Finally I can actually have all my palettes open at once! One of the first things I did was open up painter and this was one of the results: Just thought I'd share because it came out passably (and for me to get Aptom's zoaform head right is a small miracle). He looks too pretty, but then, I didn't actuallly set out for this to be an aptom pic... it just kind of turned into him when I wasn't paying attention. Quote

McAvoy Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 I know how to skateboard pretty good but the skill fo snowboarding still eludes me. I still have yet to figure out to stop. I tried to ski but again stopping usually involved me crashing me into people or tumbling down the hill. Quote

I find that sitting down works pretty well (its been a few years since I last tried, but I seem to remember a lot more time spent sitting in snow than sliding on it the few times I've actually been on a snowboard). Stopping on skis is easier. Quote

A lot of artists, including her and myself, have something called a graphics tablet. Which is basically like an advanced mousepad, that allows you to use the pen you get with it, to use the computers cursor like the tip of a pen, instead of using a mouse. For drawing on the computer, there is isn't anythign better to work with. Granted, the bigger and better you go, they get a lot more expensive. But, as mentioned in other threads... despite what tools you may have, drawing still requires studying and practice. Quote

Like Matt said, you really need a tablet to get much done. This was done with my old intuos, but I've gotten similar results with a small graphire before. The thing I find to make the biggest difference is how you have your computer setup - try to make sure you're staring straight ahead into the monitor and that its on eye level (don't look down at a screen or view it at an angle) and have the tablet in a straight line to the center of the screen. There's some unusual eye-hand coordination involved in drawing with a tablet and I find this helps somewhat. Most of its just experimenting for learning. Every program is a little different in how it works and what brushes/etc. it has. If you have access to it I find Painter (classic actually comes with some tablets still I think) or ArtRage are more intuitive than Photoshop for sketching. One very nice thing about going straight into the comp to draw is that you can use guidelines on a separate layer and you won't have to deal with erasing them around the sketch later (I drew in some roughs for this pic - if you want I think I could post a copy of the pic with the layer in question turned on). Also its always easier to tell when something's wrong in a simplified form.... Quote

I've been trying it the hard way with mouse and onscreen pencil, and getting frustrated and returning back to old school pencil and paper. But on a pc, is where I want to get good at. I've seen some of the pics on this website, like the ones Sully does. Wow!! And he does them all on his PC. I have Zeus on my desktop, and my coworkers have no idea what a Guyver is, but they all have asked me to email them a picture of Zeus and Dreadnought for their desktops! And they don't even no what's on their screens!! It just looks so cool to them. The women here love the colors of Zeus. The black and purple seems to be a favorite of them.... Sorry for the long drawn out story, but I hope to be able to become good at drawing on the pc after a few months of trying. Maybe submit some of my ideas to the website..or even just to become one of the artist for the website. I keep seeing a lot of the writers asking for more artists. Hopefully after a few months, I could be one.. Quote

I love the way new units continue to come in to the story as well as upgrades for the current ones in the story. Can't wait to see the pics when you finish them..especially that new Mark II upgrade Mizuki got after Sho died!! Quote

You have to understand how he works with his pictures, to understand how he get's the basics down. What he does, is photo/picture editing. He takes an existing photo/picture of a character in a pose he likes ( sometimes mixing and matching limbs from multiple photos/pics to acheive the pose he wants), and then adds Guyver armor/whatever over the pic. After that, using a mouse is fairly easy for coloring and shading if your used to using them, which Sully is. But I find doing lineart on the PC a lot harder than on paper/ink and scanning. It's something I only ever attempt in a Paintchat or Oekaki, and it usually comes out kind sloppy. ( but then, as mentioned, Photoshop isn't great for lineart... and Photoshop is my main art program). Speaking of Art programs... I'm going to have to kidnap Leigh-san into an Open Canvas drawing session sometime. Quote

Its worth noting that its a good idea to be careful if you take a route like that. While you can't copyright a pose, most artists don't like you reworking their own hard work (I'm in agreement with this - if you don't have permission first - don't touch). There are a lot of really good stock photos on the web for pose reference though, and these are provided for just such things so really there is no reason anyone should be tracing artwork to begin with. Though to be fair doing lineart in any program in the computer takes a long time. I don't think it ends up saving you any time really over a pen, but I usually bother with it anyway because it comes out so much cleaner if you slave at it. Usually I draw out the character three or four times until I get something I like. In the past I have been known to draw over existing pics and mix match like Sully, no where his skill level at that though Quote
