Have either of you considered things from Agito's point of view? His parents were driven to despair and suicide, he was raised by one of the most callous, depraved, cruel people in his world - arguably just as bad as Guyot - and, out of the only two people he could trust, one of them died for him, and the other one is killing herself for him. Out of all the lessons he's learned during his life, I'd say that the one that stuck was: the world will hurt you, unless you hurt it first.
Really, if you can't empathize with all of your characters, you're not going to be a very good writer, Chernaudi.
