Normally i would be waiting at the gates to see this movie but I'm going to be busy till Tuesday.... I'm really cranky about that. But I'm so psyched about it!! I mean, whodoesn't want to watch giant robots have a death match with giant monsters?? I am completely excited!

the influence of NGE is quite evident and of course the reason is clear to many of us. wasn't this supposed to be a live action NGE to start off with?

I really like what guillermo del toro has done with it. the trailers have blown me away and I wanna go and pay to watch this.

especially since I discovered my local odeon does a club card.

I am really hoping it is good, I don't like to judge based on the trailers but the advertisement campaign has been going very well and you can see the dedication for this movie, I don't expect it to be a very deep movie storywise (not many Kaiju movies are) but I do expect it to be a very fun experience with a lot of heart and not depressing and stupid like Eva is, sorry to any Evangelion fans but that it is just how I feel about the series, I acknowledge it's contribution to the anime industry and stuff but I really don't like the series and don't want Pacific Rim to be like it.

To be fair, EVA did start out to be an amazing series, just so happens the director screw all the fans with the ending.  Hopefully this movie will not follow suit.

And yes, definitely gonna watch this.  Looks like a lot of good movies coming out this week.  Hard to believe that the minion toys from despicable me 2 are sold out nationwide.  But that's for another topic.

I'm expecting a lot of destruction from this movie.  Something that we can look forward to.

actually odin, i think this movie will have a deep storyline, thats what i like about del toro movies, he's a story teller, and a good one too.

the only things that generally let down his movies are either a very limited budget, poor acting in a sense that the actor hasn't captured the charactor well or the viewer's perception of the movie and its story/message.

i'd definitly watch this, opens on tuesday so will have to make time the following saturday to watch it.

Well apparently the storyline sucks, the character's and their stories/love plots suck, and the reason for the 'invasion' is illogical. According to an IGN review. Fight scenes look amazing though.

I'm excited about Charlie Day and Ron Perlman, I guess.

Wheee!

That was fun.

Not too deep of an overall plot, but still very fun, and kick ass battle scenes.

If I had anything to really complain about the movie, was that it seemed like some of the background and scientific stuff would have been better explained, it would have definately only helped the movie. Maybe another 30 minutes of exposition that wasn't just a monologue at the beginning.

That being said, I never really felt "Lost" with what was going on, or felt like I wasn't sure what was happening.

It's a very straightforward film.

Which CAN be a negative comment... But considering some of the Mecha Anime Movies I`ve seen over the years, this was an asset, rather than a fault. It didn`t try to be Evangelion, and play with Religious themes. It didn`t try to be Gundam and go heavy on politics. It didn`t try to force unneeded comedy on people like Transformers. And it didn`t do anything "mind blowing", or do anything that would be considered `trippy`.

It was a simple Giant Robot vs Giant Monster movie, with a small bit of personal tradegedy for a couple of the main characters.

And you know what? That worked for me.

Slowly working on a sketch of Gipsy Danger... No idea when it will ever get finished!

...Maybe I gotta go watch the movie a couple more times for inspiration... Yeah... I should do that...

Saw it yesterday, and loved it!  Not too deep of a story line, not too much romance (in fact, the romance is pushed back to the background a bit IMO), plenty of comedy that naturally falls into place, and fantastic fight scenes.  The explanation for the Kaijuu invading is left to be desired, along with some of the science in the movie.  The Yeager's needing two pilots I can probably understand, but the Kaijuu just deciding to invade Earth for whatever reason and somehow all of them being clones while at the same time be totally different doesn't make much sense.

I can see where you guys can deduce that this was influenced by EVA, but I thought this was based on something else.  I'll have to look and find out; this seems a little too Westernized to be entirely EVA based.

I could not have said it better myself. So I saw Pacific Rim today, it was a very enjoyable movie that delivered exactly what i was expecting and a bit more, a highly action pack Giant Monsters vs Giant Robots movie, I may be a little biased since I am a big Godzilla fan but trust me when I say this, it is worth watching, it has it's flaws but it is a very enjoyable movie specially if you are a fan of Daikaiju movies or Tokusatsu in general.

on a additional note:

The CG in this movie is very well done, I was convinced that there really where Giant robots and monsters, I also enjoyed the little tribute they did to Mazinger (if you know the series you will know what i am talking about) my only complaint is the cliche duechbag goverment that did not want to fund the Jeager program after the kaiju started to adapt and evolve, I mean they mention something about another project that would replace the jeagers but we don't see it even once, also that the movie played a bit too safe but i don't mind.

The Kaiju were weapons that were being sent by an Alien race that wanted to take over Earth. You see them just as Gipsy Danger was about to overload. They had tried before, but the Earth wasn't "ready". The movie wasn't 100% clear, but either they created the dinosaurs, or created something to fight the dinosaurs. Either way, it wasn't to their liking yet, so they waited. A looong freakin time.

The Government wanted to build giant walls around the countries so that the Kaiju just couldn't get in to rampage in the cities. And since the Jaegers were starting to lose, they were desperate to try anything. However, as they show with Austalia, the Kaiju just tore through it like it was nothing. Thankfully Striker Eureka hadn't been dispatched yet.

They said that they came in the Dinosaur Age but went back and waited caused it was not ready, they came now cause humans basically terraformed the planet for them with pollution and stuff. The Kaiju are just overgrown exterminators for these creatures that have conquered different dimensions before invading ours.

Seen it, loved it.

I can walk away from it with only two complaints.  Time frames were a bit confusing to me.  When did Kaiju first invade?  When is this movie taking place?  Not really an issue though.
My only gripe is what also helps sell the shear size and scope of the robots and monsters.  The cameras are so close, and the action blurry, it's a little difficult with the fast cutting to tell when it going on sometimes.  Don't you dare blink.  I found the occasional establishing shot refreshing.  It was done a lot better than many other movies, but I don't like to see it every single time.  I have to force myself to focus in order to understand all the wonderful choreography.  It's kind of not as 'clear' all the time.  That being said, it is still utterly amazing, and loved it.  I wanted to stay and watch the credits to see if there was a credit "Based on" to Evangelian or anything, but I really had to... um...

So I can see how this started off as evangelian, and morphed into something new.  I mean, Kaiju are invading, and the world has come together to create a team that can take them on one at a time.  Even the plug suit design is similar.  Osuka is a guy this time, and has 'daddy issues' instead of mommy issues.  Still hot headed and arrogant though.  The leader isn't Kenji's dad anymore, but still acts like Rei's father (and still doesn't smile).  Many of the visuals are even Evangelian lifted, from a shot of the hangar bay, the elevator they use going into combat, Gendo talking to his leaders, the cyclops robot, or the life pods in the sea.  This is a worthy Eva update.

I wonder if the kaiju will be able to make another portal?  I mean, one nuke didn't take out all the Japanese in ww2, only a city.  It stand to reason the Kaiju would try again.  They are adaptive, afterall.

  • 2 months later...

So, the movie is out on video on demand and it's coming to dvd/blu ray soon. Who is excited? :D

-Sees people making NGE and PR comments-

Ok people, NGE is not original or anything. It heavily borrowed a lot of elements you typically see in Super Robot shows, Real Robot shows, and even Tokusatsu shows.  NGE is a deconstruction of the giant robot/kaiju genre, PR is a love letter to the genre. Comparing these two is like comparing Watchmen to The Incredibles. If you're gonna call PR an NGE ripoff or whatever then you better start calling Spiderman a Batman ripoff simply because they both wear costumes and fight crime.
