Out of all the animes any of you have watched, which do you think is the saddest? You always are expecting the character to get back up any minute and be full of life but then you can't believe they're gone.

Warning spoilers for some animes!

I personnally think Wolfwood from Trigun, Spike from Cowboy Bebop, Hughes from Fullmetal Alchemist, Kiku, Kyuzu, Gombei, and Haihachi from Samurai 7, Kimishima from s-cry-ED, Lockon Stratos from Gundam 00. That's all i can think of for now. Any opinions?

Well, I have seen those you have mentioned except for Samurai 7. And I really can't say that I was saddened about their death, (well except Lockon since he's one of my favorites), because it's either I can see it coming or I couldn't care less about that character.

For me, what was really saddening was Fushigi Yuugi. Here they have all the build up of the 7 guardians and you get to see them drop like flies one by one near the end of the series. I mean, they create a story and you have already grown to them. And they're gonna kill them off just like that.

Another one would be in G Gundam. 2 death's there that really saddened me. One is the death of the lead characters brother Kyouji. And the second one is the death of Master Asia.

And also may not be related to Anime, but I was really saddened by the death of Captain America. His death was even covered by almost every major news network in the world.

I agree, Master Asia was really sad and i loved G Gundam for its dbz like epicness but wow captain america too? Me and my dad love him and you're right his death was really sad and my dad was just like no....for awhile. When Trunks briefly died in the Cell saga of dbz i was all like drenn! and then Vegeta went beserk and i was like yes!

Even though Master Asia died in G Gundam i liked it how he continuously came back and helped Domon, Master kicked ass.

I agree with Hughes in FMA... It was really unexpected and that scene at the funeral, with his daughter crying really gets to you. :(

I was pretty gutted at Sho's dad's death as well. The scenes building up to it in the TV series made it more depressing, but I think the scene where he realizes what he'sdone was probably better in the OVA.

Wolfwood in the Trigun Maximum was pretty depressing. I mean the guy came back from the dead like three times in the fight with Razlo and then he just dies when he's talking to Vash. It actually took me a good 10 minutes to realize in the next chapter that Wolfwood was dead. You really need to read the Manga to do that series justice.

But Hughes death was the saddest by far. I think Sho's dad dying was inevitable, so it didn't really bother me. If Sho had to consciously kill his father to stop him, then that would have been moving.

That's true....in a way the death of Sho's dad was needed to push Sho's character along...to give hi an even stronger esolve in fighting Chronos.

I was also saddened by Hughes' death.

Another series I know of that had a sad ending was School Days. That series was F#$%ed up.

Guy falls in love with one girl and girl loves him too. Then a freind of his falls in love with him so she steals him away from other girl. Then he ends up cheating on her so she fakes being pregnent. He realizes he really loves the first girl and she's still in love with him. Well, other girls goes psycotic adn kills him when no ones is around. Then the first girl finds out and then kills that girl on top of the highschool roof top. She then goes out into the middle of the ocean where she can be alone with her dead lovers decapitated head....very sick (considering she's the one that cut of his head after she found him lying dead in a pool of blood.

Ok, maybe not a sad ending but ya gotta admit the guy had it coming to him.

A real sad series is Rurouni Kenshin / Samurai X. Ok, yeah in the series he lives in the end but that's the regular TV series. The OVA continues after that where

Kenshin dies from a disease at the very end...and I think he passes it on to Kaoru. I think it was leprasey. Looked like it was.

Very sad caused I loved that series.

THAT OVA SUCKED! It is not canon and the art style was an uncomfortable change. Also, Saito, Yahiko, and Aoshi had really good fights there, but they just disappeared for the OVA. Finally, the whole thing was a shitty flashback while Jo-chan and Kenshin were dying of Syphilis or something. It was clearly stated in the Anime and Manga that he had microscopic damage to his body, like jellyfish stings or shin splints or the Rasenshuriken or the Hachimon Tonkou (Naruto references). You can't spread physical injury as an STD! It was Leprosy you say? Why the hell would the world's greatest swordsmen of all People just die of Leprosy with no mention of sickness beforehand? It's the stupid, cliche plot twist possible!

I have to agree there. The best part of the Jinchuu arc are the fights of the supporting casts. That showed how Yahiko managed to get strong to fight alongside Kenshin. The second OVA was sickening, but the first OVA was sad. I guess they just tried to milk more money from the popularity of Kenshin from the first OVA that they released. Probably the reason for the same art style. Though not a death of a character, it's saddening how this series died.

Hey now Renegade, no need to over-react. I was just saying what I thoght I noticed. If it was something different that happened then so be it. I just thought it looked like leprasey to me. It couild have been something totally diferent than that. It could most likely be what you just mentioned. I don't read the kenshin Manga considering I don't own anything past volume 10 of the Manga or the 2nd and 3rd season of the anime.

Yes, I thought the first OVA was really sad with the death of his first wife.

Of course, Guyver has had a few other deaths that are sadenning as well...one of which isn't even animated yet. The death of Haiyami was a real blow to those that liked him. Sacrificing himself just to save Aptom, self-sacrifice to save anothers' life is always one thing in both Anime and Manga that'll neer get old.

I have to agree with Renegade, i hated the OVA's. The Manga was much better. The voices really bothered me but the only part i did like was when Enishi fought Kenshin. Enishi was just badass but the ova still sucked.

I thought the death of Haku, Zabuza, and Kimimaro were pretty sad. All three of them were my favorites besides like neji, naruto, shikamaru, choji, gai, and lee. Even though it wasn't a death but when Lee got injured in the fight with Gaara i was like o no!

Brad's death in the Trigun Anime was pretty sad as well. I'd still have to say Spike and Hughes are the saddest deaths in anime.

Don't worry Phantom, you didn't do anything wrong. I think your right about it being leprosy actually. I wasn't arguing about that. I was just expressing my hatred for that second OVA that's all.

No offense Blackwing, but you knew Haku and Zabuza would die as soon as you saw them. Kimimmaru was terminally ill too, so why did you feel so bad about their deaths? I did like these characters, but I'm not really moved by what happened to them. All of them were pretty cliche if not shallow characters. They were just too predictable for me to care.

Also, Brad from the Manga was much easier to like and feel bad for than his annoying Anime counterpart.

I'd have to say Light Yagama in Death Note. Only because he's so smart and never loses his cool in any situation, until the end. They have him begging for his life on hands and knees, they make him look like a little punk ass bitch. It ruiend the character for me. I thought he was such a bad ass up until the end.

Hokuto no Ken has some pretty poignant deaths. Notably the tragic Nanto Roku Seiken - Shin, Rei, Shuu, and Souther.

I have to say Hughes of FMA would be the saddest death ever. He had so much to live for and was such a great character...it was really sad to see him go. Lockon Stratos was also a pretty upsetting death. He was my favorite Gundam pilot of the show by far, and they had to go and kill him off. I can't really say Light's death upset me at all...he had it coming in the end. Sure Light was awesome at first, but then he just went completely nuts. I didn't like him anymore after he started killing People that weren't criminals that he could have left alive.

My saddest death would have to be: One Piece, when Brooke the musician is remembering his past and when all of his Rumba Pirate crew members are all dead, he and four crew members start to play a song called the "Song of Life". As they start playing, one by one the crew members start collapsing from exhaustion, and dying. The sad part is, whenever a crew member falls Brooke says "Now only a quartet" then another one falls, "a trio" another falls, "duet" and finally the last one falls and Brooke stops playing, his face full of tears and says, "solo..." then Brooke dies! It is sooooo sad! Fans of one piece would agree with me, its not as sad as Robin's story, but it is the second saddest flashback of the Straw Hat crew.

Grave of the Fireflies was probably the saddest thing I've ever seen in my life, but it's been years since I watched it (once is enough for one lifetime). Recently, the fourth episode of Bleach had me in tears, when Orihime's brother sent himself to the Soul Society when he came to. Normally I need to be really into an Anime for a while before I get to that point, so I give Bleach points for getting me so emotionally involved so early on.

oh goodie this is easy for me!

Shinji Mimura's death in the Manga of Battle Royale.... its like one of the only deaths in a manga/anime that i actually cared about, and it incited some emotion. to any1 who hasnt read battle royale i strongly suggest it. its only 15 volumes and makes for an epic read.

Key the Metal Idol.

I forget the name of the girl, but its the main supporting girl. The 'Pizza shock pizza'. I can stand at work, think about her last scene, and almost cry. No other series does that to me. The only other thing that has made me cry is Mulon Rouge (don't ask)

The saddest Anime death for me is actually the final 3 episodes of Witchblade. I wont reveal to much incase People havent seen them on the IFC channel or havent gotten the dvd yet. But those 3 are extremely emotional.

I cant say Murakami's death saddened me because he died a warriors death. And for those of Native American heritage no death is better then having a warrior's death.

Actually...I think Murakami died in a kinda of pitiful way. He wasn't really able to fight back against Guyot after his power was drained, and even in death his body was usurped and abused for others' schemes. Don't mean to be a prick, but that's how I see it.

Light's death in Death Note was inevitable, and I thought that he really did slip up for it to happen. He got over-confident, and trusted in others ability, very out of character. Earlier on in the series, he would second-guess himself, and think of all the possible scenarios. He also died in the most undignified manner.

I think Baki's mom had a really sad death. It took me awhile to realize she actually died, things actually looked like they were changing for the better, until you realize Baki is imagining talking to his mother.

Tomoe's death in Rurouni Kenshin was sad, but it was inevitable as it's told in retrospect. Even so, it felt so sadly avoidable as she died by Kenshin's attack.

same with me. That was sad.

I've got to say the saddest Anime deaths so far I have seen has got to be in Kido Senshi Gundam 00. Lockon Stratos died seek revenge for his parents and sister, however Ali Al Saachez didn't died!

Also the death of Chris and Licht's death scene near the end of the series has got to be the most tragic Anime death scene I have seen in my entire life.
