Guest Jupiter Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Will it ever be possible to have world peace? I really just wish everyone would get along. I'm just not for any type of war and I feel that its unethical to shoot another human being under an circumstance. I understand that its appropriate for any country to defend itself; thats fine with me. But I'm really not for another country invading another just for self gain. I guess the only one way for world peace would be possible, would be that the entire nations be ruled by an Empire. If the countries are all under the same government. Than there would be no need for a war of any sort. That government could regulate anything that it needed from either country. I also think that it would be good for the world's economy if every nation was ruled under the same kind of Governement. Than countries could develop together in harmony. I don't think anything like that will ever really happen though. Just a thought really. Quote
LordSpleach Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 I don't think a one world government will bring peace. Only the ambitious will lead that empire, and they will not care about the rest of us. Call me cynical, but I think we might have general peace among us only when we have something else to kill. Quote
Matt Bellamy Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 True world peace will never happen so long as religion and shitty politics exist. It's just a fact. The majority of fighting going on in the world at the moment is all either:Religion based - people bred to hate another religion or tribe. They are told so from a very early age that this is how it is. And sometimes no matter how much schooling they may get, that is a part of their life and culture. And I am not even talking about child soldiers. There are people in this world. Educated people. That still hate due to their religion. They don't fight for personal gain. They fight to wipe out their opposing side.I work with a former South Sudanese child soldier, and he was able to adjust away from that. But some are just unwilling to changeAnd what the worst part is, the majority of these people don't fight, but they protest or make their voices heard elsewhere. That is still wrong (re: the majority of the US Republican party for one)Political Based - Government or people who are power hungry. Al we have to do is look at Putin right now, or any communist nations still in existence. All they want is to control their people. They don't care what religion, what sex, or what your skin type is. If you are living in their country, they want you to follow their rules. And sometimes that can lead to uprisings and ultimately war. Some people say that we need a similar situation to what happen in Star Trek. Have an Alien race visit ours and "show us the way". Well, what they forget is, they had already fought World War 3, and by that time the world population was scattered and small. And I would rather not have to go through that for peace. 1 Quote
*Jess♥ Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 The issue is money.money is a system to displace control of the worlds resources to a few people. 85 people hold more wealth than 3.5 billion poorest. in many countries, people are having real problems getting water because this resource has been claimed by some corporation. nestle still kept bottling water in California at a time of drought. So I have given just a very select few small examples, there are multitudes more. It is pretty obvious what each of us can do to effect real change for the better in the world. Stop sending money to these large corporations and try to support your local producers wherever possible. If you buy second hand goods you also stop the money flow. We may not be part of some armed force, but we have power. every one of us has power. we can control what happens in the world by choosing where the money goes. stop taking out loans too. the banks are also a huge problem. unfortunately, we have to use banks for myriad things, but we can at least work to mitigate how mu7ch we contribute to their system of imbalance. is it impossible? how can I get a Big Mac without giving money to macdonalds? I know the answer because I solved that problem completely. I started to evaluate what the adverts were doing. I learnt how to filter out their attempts at brainwashing. I learnt about what is actually in the 'food' they produce. I realised I don't need to buy that stuff and can get much nicer food in other places. Macdonalds food isn't actually nice, it's just convenient. I have made much nicer food myself. It's not too hard. I used to be really keen on big macs but now I just have no desire for them and I feel healthier and happier. This is just one example. There will come a time when we will not have to work. robots will do all the work. what kind of world would we live in? how would money work? well the point is, we should be aiming for a zero money system. if we try and take this imaginary currency out of our lives, we will make the world a better place. We just need to do things bit by bit. When I want coffee, I avoid Nescafe as a general rule because Nestle are evil incarnate. I'd prefer to go for coffee from our local specialist store but since I'm currently poor, I settle for store's own brand. mitigation is better than no action. 1 Quote
*Jess♥ Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 sorry, maybe some people won't make the link between my post and world peace. war economy is one concept that applies here. then there is resource scarcity. many people are still in the mindset of scarcity, and so countries, borders etc is all important. one obvious resource that is controlled by a few individuals is oil. just think about what happens when we all switch over to solar power and wind power. if we choose to get our energy services from companies that use renewable sources, we will make a huge difference. if we choose to buy food that was produced locally, we will reduce the amount of product being shipped around the world via cargo ships that guzzle so much oil. Salkafar Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 All these problems are just manifestations of innate issues humans have. We have problem-solving intelligence, but we are not programmed to use it in our current environment. Instead we're equipped to handle the everyday problems of plainswalking hunter-gatherers, as we were until just 7000 years ago. Our social instincts are sufficient to handle a group of about 150 individuals. Result: frustration from living a lifestyle our instinct can't handle - and we're not even consciously aware of it because we've never known anything else. Multiply by several billion and what you get is this world of ours. Some hypothesize our instincts will adapt to a more urban lifestyle - improved social instinct, less aggressive libido, more altruism, and so on - but unfortunately developments like that take thousands of years, if not longer. Let's hope we will manage to do something ourselves soon, using technology. 2 Quote
Mirabilis Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 (edited) To say that all religions are apart of the cause is truly laughable and exceptionally bigoted. I understand and acknowledge that some religions do call for the exterminations of opposing forces, however there are plenty of nonreligious individuals who have butchered hundreds of millions of people and hundreds of wars that were caused for personal self-gain not simply for religious purposes. Also, the Rep and Dem's have every right to express their opinions and voice whatever they want regardless if they happen to be religious or not. Sorry, Matt but your comment was extremely offensive. I feel like you want all religious people exterminated or at least silenced forever. I know you didn't say that but I can't help but to feel that way. There are many problems that constitute a war, over population for one, lack of resources, lack of food or water, religious expansions, but the main reasons as Ryuki pointed out is money. The lust for wealth and power. So many wars have happened due to debts and a desire to erase debts. A desire to increase a nations wealth and prestige. We also have the human nature which also seems to be rather blood thirsty and enjoys violence. We all enjoy Guyver for instance, we enjoy action and bloodshed. The human element is of course beyond my own understanding, but it is non the less something that plays apart in war. If we truly want to due away with all wars, we have to due away with the desire of conflict and that is something each and every individual would have to deal with themselves. *Jess♥ Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 please allow me to add some perspective. one can say religions are part of the cause, without necessarily inferring that the religion is wholly responsible. any religion that says it's own precepts are correct and therefore the others are wrong is by definition a source of conflict, whether that be armed conflict, physical conflict or merely conflicting thoughts. It is also very different from suggesting that all religious people will be the cause of a conflict of some sort. At the end of the day, it is impossible to say that Christianity or Islam or Judaism are not in any way responsible for any wars when looked upon as a collection of scriptures and schools of thought. the basic fundamental definition of religious is somebody who follows a precept or collection of precepts. This gives rise to fundamentalism and extremism as a matter of course. as an example, a person who is an adherent of christianity cannot simply separate themselves from the spanish inquisition in terms of religious following. they were christian too. I don't think it is necessarily fair to take Matts words and infer that he was saying all adherents of any religion are to blame. I think it may help to ask Matt what he was implying with his statement if there is any misunderstanding. 1 Quote
LordSpleach Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 I have to agree with Yuki on this one. Also, based on Matt's wording, he was NOT blaming all religions. He was just point out the basic causes of religious based violence. Mirabilis, you might point out the mentioning of the US Republican Party as bias against Christians(as most Republicans are), but it was just an example. Quote
Matt Bellamy Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 I think Yuki covered most of my point. And by "True World Peace" I meant EVERYBODY EVERYWHERE being ok with EVERYONE EVERYWHERE. Not just stopping wars or killing. Killing will ALWAYS happen, as it is close to human nature. But a good lot of Wars throughout history have been started by Religion. Others by other means yes, But Religions HAVE caused wars, and will continue to do so. And Money is NOT the primary cause of everything either. As an example, tell that to the South Sudanese. A lot of their fighting and hate is tribal. They don't care about politics or money. There have been stories of people who have been decent friends for YEARS. People who have married people, only to find out that they are from the other tribe, and then KILLED them. (Again referencing from my friend at work) Even the more non violent religions still discriminate on some levels. No religion is perfect. Some are "nicer" than others, yes. But there will always be issues. And yes, I used the Republican party as an example, as the most vocal party members are down right ignorant and plain old stupid sometimes, only because they are so behind the current times, that the United States can`t get hardly anything done in congress ( and that is a fact that the current congress is one of the least productive congress ever). Not saying the Democrats are saints... They just tend to stay quieter, so there is less insanity to deal with. But remember. Freedom of speech is not freedom to not be criticized for your views. And I am not American, so I am not held by American law either way. I am sorry you felt insulted by my views, but views from people outside of the country you live in WILL be different. Misreading something and then basically calling someone something is another way conflict happens. See? Conflict. Not peace. 2 Quote
Mirabilis Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 (edited) Sorry for being mia I've been fighting a really bad cold but starting to feel better.Anyways, yes I acknowledged that religions have caused wars in the past, only one continues to do so today that I am aware of, if you know of any others please feel free to share. However, comparatively, wars that have been caused by religions are not as high as wars caused by debt aka money. Religions will continue to cause wars? Again only one (as far as I know) continues to act in the medieval mind set. Most have been moderated to be understood and taught in modern times. So I again disagree with you on that statement. Most of the evidence points to religions losing more and more power and becoming more and more private. Only when you are faced with conversion or death, would something like a war be started by it in modern times.Money is not the root cause for every single conflict, however, money comparatively is the highest cause of conflict. Throughout human history wars have been started to gain wealth, prestige, money, land, territory and to erase debts. The Babylonians destroyed Israel and captured all of their gold and wealth, why? Because they had accumulated the most amount of wealth and gold in that region at that time. The Median-Persian's started up their empire and started borrowing money from the Babylonians, but they had to pay it back with interest, well after so long they couldn't pay back their debt, so they started a war and took all the wealth and erased their debts. Same thing happened with the Greek's and later on with the Romans. This is just a tid bit example of many more that could be stated. You had WWII after the Great Depression, the Blood Diamonds situation and so many other conflicts that have been started over wealth. For crying out loud, people even accuse George Bush for invading the Middle East for oil which equates to Wealth and money. So YES I stand by my statement. Most conflicts are started over debts and money. Not all of course, but comparatively most.Issues will always exist, because their are differences in the human race. Religion is simply one and an easy one to pick out. But it's by no means limited to that. You have ethnic problems, social status problem, gang problems, sports problems anything that divides a group of people than their will be some form of conflict.I know freedom of speech is not freedom of criticism but I will say here in the states it's the Dem's who are WAY more vocal than the Rep's. Both are equally ignorant and both are exceptionally bigoted. You know how much hatred you get for simply saying I am not for gay marriage? Death threats and all kinds of stuff! It's ridiculous. The same goes for dressing up in my taste and style, makes me a "devil worshiper" so yes. Both parties discriminate are both very hateful because both use complete and total absolutes. You don't see it their way or agree with them, then you are the bigot. Both parties have this mentality and both are completely juvenile. But again, conflict is apart of human nature. Even if religion was magically done away with, it wouldn't change anything really, not here in the States at least. We would still have conflict over politics, poor/rich, government vs people, cops vs families all kinds of stuff. America right now is a boiling red hot pan. Edited August 19, 2014 by Mirabilis Quote
Aether Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 all we need to do is to eliminate selfishness and stupidity and replace it with empathy and objectivity. although that's not very empathetic to idiots is it? 1 Quote
*Jess♥ Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 ha ha.. well I do believe it is possible for this kind of ideal to spread. mass information dissemination leads to more deeper understanding. I think it is now possible for the human race to become more harmonious. I'm not saying it's going to be easy, but it's possible. The ones at the top of the tree, those are the ones who will resist, will find it more difficult to integrate. the ones at the bottom, the ones who end up as drug addicts, thieves, etc, these are usually the most able to change if only given a chance. some of the most genuine people I have met are people who come from a really dodgy background. 2 Quote
*V Guyver Posted August 24, 2014 Posted August 24, 2014 Well, the reasons for war have always been around, and will continue to be around for the foreseeable future. --Differences in Wealth between people(s). A poor nation wants to invade a rich nation, or take it's technology, or simply expand it's own power base to threaten other countries, or to ward off potential enemies. Whenever there is a riot, the rioters usually go after business or wealthy people in part because of the disparity, but of course greed. The concept of property is an entirely human invention, and unfortunately it does cause division. Even if resources are evenly distributed and shared, eventually when a shortage, either from drainage, or an overpopulation will be certain. Currently the most feared resource is nuclear energy, but in the future, you'd be surprised as we fight over the growing scarcity of clean water.--Resources that we clamor and fight over, such as land, water, food, oil. The rarer, the more greedily we try to take it. An ally today can suddenly become an enemy because they discovered oil, and wouldn't allow you to prospect. Now you have invaded and taken their land by force. --Ideologies can lead to war. Mostly forced ideologies are the cause. As one group will try to control another. Ideologies follow belief in how the world should be, some justified, others not. Everything operates on a certain logic, the logic can be sensible or flawed. But ultimately, if it's an attractive enough change people will fight for that ideology. Or fight to preserve an existing one. --Religion, same as Ideologies. Except, with religion, the way you worship changes over time, and with that new problems emerge. One doesn't need a reason, so long as it's preached to do so. When it comes down to it, religion is a mix of control and racial ignorance. --Racial ignorance. Ignorance plus social race hierarchy are a known poison to society. Genocide has been a long thing in human history. Even the bible shows Jews both committing and suffering genocide in it's long origins. The war against the philistines was a genocide, much like the enemies against their realities in ancient babylonia wanted to ethnically cleanse the strange tribe who worshipped an invisible god. Unless the above are removed, or lessened to a universally acceptable level there will always be some conflict. However, with enough effort. War can be eliminated, at least on paper. 2 Quote
