Yeah, I never really understood why people kept connecting Pacific Rim with EVA. Anywho, Guillermo Del Toro is directing this baby and the man rarely ever makes a crappy movie (Mimic was crap, though that was because of Studio interference). So I'm feeling pretty confident that this movie will kick ass.

It's been a long time since Hollywood released any good giant robot movie. Heck, I don't even remember them releasing any good giant robot movie. Robot Jox just didn't quite cut it for me. I'm looking forward to this.

really?

The EVA's were biological constructs. those don't look biological.

so it's more of a very loose interpretation?

The Eva's had hardware armor (I believe to restrain the Angel as well as weaponize it). They required electricity for the armor, and had human pilots (with a neural interface) to control the monsters.

Evangelian:

-started using aircraft carriers to transport Evas

-featured a military organization made up of people from around the world

-the plot is post apocalyptic, the robots are defending from a second wave of the invasion, trying to prevent 'second impact'

-The invaders have a religious connotation (Del Toro likes HP Lovecraft mythology, in which the gods are asleep under the sea, and will awaken to devour humanity)

My guess is that the Asian girl in the combat training (?) is this version of Rei Ayanami. Just a guess

"Two pilots entering neural bridge"

To fight monsters, we created monsters

yeah I can see the links in the story.

isn't it sort of a judge dredd -> robocop relationship?

heavily inspired by it, but has become its own creation?

on the other hand, the story of the film could bear a very close resemblance, but we can't tell because we only have a trailer.

that will be an interesting element to my first watch of it. seeing how close the story is.

Using GLaDOS's (Portal/Portal 2) voice/tone for the computer was sheer genious. I don't care what anyone says. :neko:

That being said, using 2 pilots ( one of the Jeagers uses 3) seems a bit overkill... But I still am optimistic.

As for people saying it seems like a live action Evangelion movie... One of the things mentioned in some of the promotional info, is that the main Jeager, Gipsy Danger, is an older Jeager ( first one ever created if I remember correctly) and may have been made differently than the other Jeagers. Similarily like how Eva Unit 01 was made from Lillith and not Adam like all the other units. Rumors are it may not be entirely mechanical in nature... Thus the bit of Eva similarity. Using the monsters to create mecha to fight the monsters.

That and a few of the Jeagers have a somewhat similar look to the Eva's ( or at least Jet Alone...)

This certainly is one of the movies that could be totally a straight to home video B-Movie with crappy special effects. But DelToro being the director gives it hope for great things.

but those effects look amazing!

or do you mean they could have been bad?

The main weak point about this film IMO is the name.

The name is not very memorable. that is a real shame because there is a possibility that this will not do as well as it could, because of the name.

Sorry to be the moaner but I did groan when I saw Idris Elba giving some pre battle war speech designed to give men some kind of arousal.

I also just thought it was uninspiring and although the effects were glossy there seemed to be not enough weight to the robots. I'm still more impressed by the effects and designs of robot jox:

There's just a sense that they're real. It all still feels like a hi end game FMV to me.

But maybe that's just me.

I'm interested in this point, because to me, I felt these robots were very impressive in the way they had some good weight to them. it was my strong feeling that the robots felt a lot more solid than what we had seen in the transformers movies.

I shan't compare it to Robot Jox right now, but do you also think these robots have more heft than the transformers?

I thought that the concept of Robot Jox was cool, but then I found the robots themselves to be really ugly. The robots in Pacific Rim seems to have this streamlined look. This doesn't look like a hyped up movie, and if this is indeed rated to be a B-movie, then all the more reason to watch it. there are certainly B-movies that are way much better than other A-list movies out there right now.

I'm confused as to what a b movie is then?

I've seen a lot of movies that were not hyped up an awful lot that were amazing.

I mean, I don't remember a lot of hype for the original hellboy. was that a b movie?

A B-movie is mainly story related. Anything that sounds like a cheap 50's movie is a B-movie.

Alien is technically a B-Movie ( a total rip of 'It The Terror from beyond Space.') Doesn't stop it being a great film though.

I loved the design of robot jox, they look fit for purpose rather that trying to be too fantasy. Most military weapons are hideous but that's because the aren't meant to look good.

The do have way more heft than transformers who seemed to defy our gravity in every possible way.

Basically B-movies are usually straight to dvd films. I know the Syfy(ugh I prefer SciFi) channel in the US always shows many examples of B-movies. Don't know if the UK has similar channel though.

I basically meant, "In the hands of a lesser director, this would probably have been a B-Movie with a lower production budget and crappy special effects." Don't know why I didn't just say that, lol!

But Del Toro has the weight to pull around now, and can demand a good sized budget for his projects.

And yes, the "B-Movie" type that I am refering to, is the kind of movie that goes straight to DVD. Usually lower budget movie with lesser known actors ( with the occasional known). Granted, it's not that they are BAD movies by default. I have seen some really good "B-Movies" ( Dark Hero anyone?). They are just movies that don't have the backing and star power for a full theatrical release. This includes movies with aging stars who aren't as popular anymore ( Steven Segal, Jean Cluade Van Damm, Dolph Lundgren etc...), or low budget sequels to existing movies ( Starship Troopers, Universal Soldier, Darkman etc...). There is an untold variety of movies that never get any hype, but are just as entertaing ( sometimes more so) than big budget films.

This is why I hate the fact that movie rental places are practically gone now... Some of them were full of old B-Movies that were definately worth a rental.
