Oh poo! Everyone is in agreement that it's hard to do debates.

One thing about the joker, its the villain that make the hero. Kill the villain and you kill the hero. Just look at the successful characters, Batman has joker and is still alive an kicking. And I find it funny that People find the joker so insane, no villain wants to work with him. And then there's Superman with his Lex Luthor. Captain America and his Red Skull, (well, in this case, it's a little different. I won't spoil anything, but it made news all over the world).

Also, I like the way how Batman uses fear to his advantage. And although unrelated, I find this phrase from dune very appropriate:

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

Uh.... Dune was originally a book by Frank Herbert published way back in 1965. The movie was based on the first book and left out many important elements. They remade the first book into a sci-fi mini-series. They also made a mini-series called "Children of Dune", which was based on the second and third book, "Dune Messiah" and "Children of Dune". Which, by the way, are good reading. But were not here to talk about Dune. Sorry to be out of topic.

So, about Batman....

One thing about sequels, is that they owe it to the first movie. it is a rarity that the sequel do better than the first movie.

With the first batman franchise, we see the first movie (Batman) being better and it's last sequel (Batman & Robin) as the worst. Hopefully with Nolan in the helm, this won't be a trend.

If they want to showcase the gadgets of Batman, fine, they can do that, Batman's gadgets in the comics are way to unbelievable, but they are not to focus of the story. In the Dark Knight Movie, even though he has new gadgets, I don't want them to waste quality story time to feature a new bike riding through the highway showcasing it's thingamajig. Realsim isn't really much of an issue, it's the detective skills thats most important.

One thing I regretted in Batman Begins, Ra's Al Ghul never called Batman "Detective".

Or did he? I forget.

He didn't. I just re-watched it on Blu-Ray (or at least I didn't catch it). Did anyone else check out Batman: Gotham Knight yet? Think Animatrix, but with Batman, I guess.

Batman begins could have had more detective parts, true. But it did have Bruce Wayne dress as a hobo when he first arrived in Gotham, and start to map out which lawyers and politicians were dirty. He was also scaling building with his x-ray tool to actually search for drugs and such. Doesn't that count as detective grunt work?

Those are detective work, but I was thinking more like Sherlock Holmes detective. One should be very observant around his surrounding noticing the smallest detail. Like how you can tell when someone is lying or hiding something. Linking random series of event into an overall master plan. And Mcguyver like resourcefulness. I know it's not fair to compare batman to other characters, but hey, that's what I would like to think.

I would say that Batman Begins worked very well because it tells the starting point of Batman's career. It shows how green batman can be and eventually established himself as an urban legend. There is one quote that I would like to share with everyone as to why movies are made into a certain way: "The formula of failure is to try to please everyone"

I just got back from seeing this picture. I have read the reviews on rotten tomatoes. I have heard the thoughts of people. I have only one thing to say and I will put it in spoilers since I'm not going to ruin the movie for anyone:

F*** the Joker! Two-Face is where its at in this film! The Joker was a pycho that at certain points liked to give a rambling monologue. The Joker was crazy, but Two face was a pycho that I believe went beyond the Joker. Due to unfortunate things, Two Face emerges and sees that which we all know and hopefully understand (I know I do very well); The world isn't a nice place. The World is an evil torture chamber of darkness and horror. Through lies and manipulation, Two Face chooses a path that reveals his true character. He becomes a shadow of himself. His good side steps into the darkness, and a monster reamerges. Two-Face was by far my favorite character of the film. If you are planning to see Dark Knight, do it ASAP!!! The movie does not dissapoint on any level!!! It deserves 4 stars and if it does not recieve four stars, then those reviewing it need therapy.

I will say this though: Batman had too many gadgets and didn't do nearly enough detective work, just as you all said...

Batman rocked!!! the joker was perfect and two face was just a total shocker! i knew he was gonna be promoed but i didnt know they were gonna do the whole story in the same movie!! its like two movies in on.

If you go on the IMDB and check it out you'll see that TDK is at number one in the top 250 movies of all time. Are you seriously telling me that this movie is better than movies which changed the world of cinema forever? Blad Runner, Alien, Goodfellas, 2001. It's even knocked the Godfather off the number one spot.

The fact is People shouldn't be allowed to vote on a new movie until it's been out for a year and they hype has died down.

These are children for the most part giving it ten out of ten minutes after coming home from the cinema.

I find it a little insulting to all those great movies of the past which are being ignored.

I understand why, it's because most modern films are so awful when something marginally good comes out like this or Iron Man it's lauded as the greatest movie ever.

People also see movies as an intelligence test for some reason. If a person likes a movie which is crap and they are told that they tend to defend it quite vehementely because they think if the films crap that makes me stupid but it just means you enjoyed it.

I haven't seen TDK but I really doubt it's better than the movies I've mentioned above to name a few.

as times change, tastes change. it's a sad fact that People of today will think that batman is better than something like alien, simply because they enjoy it more at hte moment.

normal People don't take into consideration the passing of time.. even though the poll might say "of all time" People ignore that and think about the last few films they saw.

While I loved TDK... it not a "Popcorn" movie that I would go re-watch multiple times.

In saying that, it was still a really good movie.

But, unlike other comic book movies and such, there is no scene in the movie that I really want to rewatch over and over again. I've rewatched Iron Man completely like 5 times, and rewatched memorable scenes a good hundred times or so. I tend to do this with a lot of movies and Anime.

But the Dark Knight has no scenes that really want me to go back to it.

The Joker was played brilliantly. He truly was the definition of what the Joker became in the comics once they became more serious. He wasn't about the money, revenge, or even the killing. He only wanted total anarchy. Hw wanted to break down every citizen of Gotham and make each an every one of them become a killer.

And he really did it to Harvey Dent. What he did to Harvey was what he wanted everyone to become. A deranged killer with their own twisted sense of morals.

Jokers methods were batshit insane... but boy did they ever work. Like saying " If this guy is not dead within 30 minutes, he'll blow up a hospital." Just out of the blue, he creates almost complete anarchy with only a threat... which he also make good on. He doesn't have any morals to stop himself from pushing a button, or pulling a trigger that could kill hundreds at a time.

Another unfortunate thing in this one, is that it was focused more on the Joker. Batman wasn't nearly as awesome as he should have been. Granted, it'd still very "Year One" and he has a lot to learn. It was nice to see that his views on criminals was pretty clouded until the Joker started his rampage. Quite the learning experience he got.

And yes, the Jokers magic trick was just so bloody hilarious... one that we'll hopfully never see in real life...

SE I agree with your statement but in this regard: It should be the best movie of the new millennium!

The fact is, the movie sold out in the entire american country in every movie theater from coast to coast. It sold more tickets and sold them faster than any movie in american history. So that may be why they put it at the top, but its not the greatest movie of all time

I've seen this movie last night. And I have to agree that this is still the "Year One" for Batman as it seems that they continued with that continuity. Joker is very defined, I like the interaction of Batman and Joker, that's the way they should be. Joker trying to push the buttons of Batman trying to see if he will break. I also felt that Batman deserved the title Dark Knight only at the end of the movie, I can't get into any details for this without spoiling anything. There were some detective work involved but they didn't seem to highlight most of them, and it's just like they pushed them in the back to feature the tech. Cool sonar though.

By the way, did anybody noticed the batcave?

I saw it too. No, it isn't topping films that changed cinema: Godfather, Alien, Blade Runner, or 2001 (I'd easily leave Goodfellas out of the revolutionary film list). However, I will go as far to say that The Dark Knight is one of the best mainstream Hollywood/blockbusters movies ever made. It ranks up there with Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark. It is truly a great movie. Ledger's performance was phenomenal, easily deserves an Oscar nomination--and not one out of sympathy; he crushed Nicholson's bullshit joke of a Joker.

I really hope they don't do another one...

Before I say anything about the dark Knight, you guys must know that...... I love the animated batman series. I saw the movie on Friday, Man the Joker was like a real action version of the animated series Joker, and thats where this Movie won me over. Batman begins didn't do it and never could, but this one did, The Dark Knight is the best Comic book hero's movie around. The Dark knight takes sit downs on all the other superhero movies, I'm looking at you spider man 1,2,3, Hulk, and Iron man(Even tho Mr Jr performance of stark does out do Bales grunting Batman, on some many levels,) Marvel needs to step up there movie game up to entertain me Like the dark Knight did. This Movie was just an Over All Good Movie, I don't really come a cross a lot of Over all Good movies like this, in the times we are in now, heck this may be the 1st time I would go re watch a Movie before it comes out of Theaters and to DVD.

Also Holly got a new King.

you know.... i honestly cant say.... both were done with supreme accuracy to me, from twofaces coin toss decisions, and his way of getting around them, the driver, and jokers twisted ways of doing everything combined with his humor slash sadistic tendencies.... i equally like both. i do think that two face was more intimidating. but thats how he was suppose to be. jokers not so much intimidating as he is unpredictable. two face is just scary cause you know what hes gonna do. the opposite with joker.

it was perfect!!!! i go to see movies in the theater for two reasons.

one, its the setting, some how if feels more offical and the sound system there is pretty good.

two, its for times i like to call "theater moments"

what i mean by that is little moments that the audience reacts too. like when you first see two faces face,(tongue twister) this guy infront of me was makin out with his girl but he looked at the screen just as they showed his face, hehe, he started freakin out and crap. it was hilarious. other moment was the magic trick, you couldnt hear what was bein said cause of the laughter. i was laughin pretty hard, for some reason things are funnier when theres more People laughin too.

my first theater moment that i can remember was episode two, when yoda got down and dirty, when they stopped fighting the entire audience stood up and clapped... yep. we were all starwars geeks that day. it felt good.
