For Star Wars.... no, Peter Jackson made a mess of King Kong. He's not so hot is he really? To make something feel epic.... and to respect the source.... To create interesting, believable characters... Peter Berg ? To be honest, I don't have a beef with JJ Abrams technical ability. I'm more concerned with his respect for the source. If I believed he could remain true to Star Wars, then I would be perfectly happy.

wow. what hurts me the most is that there will be many people who will not view it as black satire. incredibly poignant. It's about time somebody was so brave to produce something so incredibly in-your-face about what societal problems really exist.

you made an excellent point. if they wanted to use Ra, Khepri and Bastet, then that could pose an issue if the design was overly formed from the Scarab shape. So they needed to have a basic shape and design that could be adapted to the others. so the basic fundamental design ideal is a good one. yes I think I would like to say that. The ideal of having a simple design that could clearly show the different forms, this is sensible. So what of the design of the basic form? if we were to subtract the theme of the animals from the design of OOO, what do we have left? perhaps the remaining form would not be too different from W? is that good or bad? If we consider den-o, the base form was interesting in its own right. it didn't look very strong and was awkward, but it was still interesting and clearly showed that it was den-o. looking at that design with all the gimmicks removed, it was still clearly identifiable. the basics of good design is usually described as being such that if you remove identifiable marks like colours and text, the design is still identifiable and unique. I think in this regard, OOO fails. so what elements might we consider if we are to remove the animal motifs and remove the idea of the scarab. ancient Egyptian armour or regalia? combine this with the OOO ? how about including the ankh somehow?

Thanks for sharing your views so what I would like to challenge you with is how do you think about how these are implemented? Do you believe the themes you mentioned are satisfactorily represented in a sympathetic design? I mean, these animals could be present in any aspect of culture, not necessarily Egyptian. I realise you like the design, but do you think that a more effective design could have been brought about? what are your views on the research I have performed thus far, do you think it could work as a more well thought out design process? The Ankh is a good observation. our secondary character was called Ankh, and his appearance was that of a hawk and was clearly based on Ra. I think the character design for Ankh was good. do you think this was sufficiently represented in the equivalent OOO design?

Kuuga? I don't see it. yeah, I know beetles have been used a few times. grasshopper seemed to be the original basis. kabuto had a lot of different insect types. I think it's good to stick with that. I think though... ways this could develop... the circle on his chest could stay, it is a good way to use the OOO. but what if the circle was representing the sun that the scarab is meant to roll around. I can just imagine the kind of cool moves and special effects they could do with that. then if we look at the scarab beetle, it has very interesting spikes on it. The ridges on it's exoskeleton are also interesting. I think the armour could take on that chitin texture and the spiky structures could be included on the armour. the spikes on the scarab's head are below the eyes so that could result in some very interesting design elements.

I'm not happy with the crummy design on kamen rider of late. I was writing about it in the wizard thread so I thought I'd move on over here so as not to go off topic too much. how should we design kamen rider? or in other words, let;s look upon the failings of the official designs, then think about the theme of the series and try and formulate some more appropriate ideas and maybe even better designs. I want to first start off with Kamen Rider OOO. I think the design of this rider fails across the board. we are given a theme of mummy's and greed. riches and treasure of ancient civilisations. The idea is that the power comes from coins and those coins are generated from people's greed. it is clear that this is based on the idea of tomb robbers. people used to break into a mummy's tomb and steal the treasure. this would result in them receiving the mummy's curse. so how do they represent the enormous theme of this series. a spandex suit with plastic moulded breasplate with a big circle on it. money well spent I am sure. what kind of research and development went into that? maybe I'm missing something, but the only thing I can ascertain is the suggestion that they may be trying to represent bas relief with the design. well I don't think this is acceptable to be completely honest, so I started doing some rudimentary research. I thought I could go with what may have been their motif. I searched for 'mummy' and 'bas relief'. well I couldn't find any straight line and corner designs similar to what is shown in OOO, but I did find some wonderful depictions of old egyptian style clothing and armour. one image stood out the most. that was the scarab. we all know that the scarab is pretty important part of egyptian culture, so if we extend from that and recall that kamen rider is based on bugs... we can really do something interesting. I included some images I found of a scarab beetle to serve as a starting point for our imagination. I would love to get your feedback.

upcoming series Kamen Rider Wizard - september 2012

well since ozu was based around mummy's, ancient civilisations etc, I was expecting something that had an ancient feel. the textures and trimmings of the costume should have had something to go with that theme, but instead it looks like spandex and plastic moulding. if the suit was made in modern times, then it could look like modern armour plating, or if it was made in ancient times then it should have the look of old plated armour or leather armour etc. if it was purely the mystical power of the medals then the suit should have had some mystical trimmings and something related to greed and riches. I think in terms of reflecting upon the theme of the series, it just barely stuck with the theme of OOO, by having a round breastplate and using the three different elements. sure, one could argue that the trimmings are made to represent bas relief that could be seen on ancient temples etc. but in fact due to the colours and placement, more resembles electronic circuitry and just doesn't work very well. sorry to take it off topic though. this is about wizard it is a shame because i have seen some fan art of wizard that looks quite interesting. here is what I am thinking. he is a wizard. he uses magic. the source of his powers come from a crude ring that was created by that guy. my thoughts firstly go directly to the chestplate type thing that he wears. where does that come from? what type of magic would result in this kind of thing. we would have to see the protagonist as a master of conjuring in order to craft something so specific. the cloak, I can understand. this kind of thing is common among magicians. the mask, I can kind of sort of understand. it is based on the gem itself. but the fixtures and fittings of it, look very technological. where does the technology come from? I didn't notice any references to magi-tech in the story. it just doesn't really fit. Wizard would have been far more believable if it had a design that more resembled Kiva. -
Thanks Durendal! OK... This one will be typeset like a proper scanlation. no tricks. but we need to put some text on it to let people know what is going on. I am thinking that perhaps along the bottom of the pages we put the following.

[emote=monkey]z194[/emote] I most certainly did not say that. [emote=monkey]z185[/emote] It might be nice if JJ Abrams fell off a cliff... [emote=monkey]ohboy[/emote]

upcoming series Kamen Rider Wizard - september 2012

I had a look at that beast you guys referred to. I just want to know why they are sticking with such insulting design processes? This is why I can't get into Kamen rider easily these days. The design processes for the series from faiz through decade, had an elegant and thoughtful design procedure. The designers clearly gave though to the themes of the show and created a costume design that was sympathetic to the show and also sympathetic to the viewer. But since then, the designs have gotten more and more haphazard. They seem to be favouring gimmicky shapes and moulded plastic that doesn't seem sympathetic at all. this beast guy? how does his costume lend credence to what he does, where he comes from, what story he is supposed to tell? I mean, it is quite insulting isn't it? if his suit is supposed to represent magical energy in the form of a beast, then where is the fur? beasts created by magic are not likely to look like moulded plastic. how is that design respectful or sympathetic to me? If I were to imagine a magical beast, I would be thinking of shimmering fur. If the suit is supposed to represent a man made object, then it needs to be represented in a way that suggests stress management etc. padding or plate armour, chitin etc. I see none of this. I see no evidence of how this is even remotely realistic and as such, it is impossible to take it seriously. This is different from super sentai as they have an established convention of Applied Phlebotinum. -
I was thinking of something like in tales of graces (or other tales games?) it could be super difficult with guyver though, it's hard to draw those guys.

This month, I am not doing any translation, I need to focus on my personal life. (which includes learning another language so I don't want to confuse myself) We will be releasing a scanlation this month, with a message placed on the scanlation informing people of how we are changing our methods. Durendal, if you get chance, the floor is open for you to do this months chapter [emote=monkey]z087[/emote] [emote=monkey]oops[/emote]

looking at the state of their clothes and tetsuro's beard and how long their hair is, how long have they been there? maybe a few days to a week?

It all makes sense now. yeah, I saw the confirmation. I have found a petition to stop him directing it. I hope that in time, people will realise that this is bad news and will also sign the petition. http://www.change.org/petitions/disney-stop-j-j-abrams-from-directing-the-next-star-wars-film If it goes ahead, then I will come to share some of you guys' views, that star trek 7 is not a true continuation of the series and that star trek ends at episode 6 (or 3, depending how you view it) I know I said, that comment about Uwe Boll, but I honestly would prefer Uwe Boll to direct it in light of this recent news.

A kickstarter is for a specific cause. It would be difficult to do a kickstarter and raise money and promise to give the money to a publisher. but even if that is good, there is the matter of dealing with kadokawa. people have said that chuangyi stopped releasing because of issues dealing with the publisher. I want guyver in english, but as long as we continue acting 'on faith' that people will be good little bunny rabbits and go and buy some merchandise out of the goodness of their hearts... we are part of the problem, not the solution. I know a Russian scanlation is produced from our work. We've always been fine with that. But perhaps that is part of this issue but you are reluctant to talk about it? I'll speak to Cannibal about that.

thanks for sharing your views. you asked a question and our answer is this - purchase/subscription model for guyver manga You said you don't wish to buy the japanese manga, but that is currently the most efficient way to give our money to yoshiki takaya and the publishers. we pay for manga, we read the manga. if you truly don't want to have the book cluttering up your house, you can give it to your nephew or something and yes of course, you are right. copyright exists to protect the publisher. but that is not what copyright is supposed to be. in most people's eyes (which is what the law is meant to be about) copyright is supposed to be for protecting a creator of a story. unfortunately the law is a broken system and currently favours large corporations. but there are people working to fix that.

This is a general thread about South Korea. I just thought it would be cool to talk about what everyone thinks of South Korea. What do you think of when somebody mentions south Korea. what are they famous for? have you ever visited? I thought it would be interesting to talk about it since a lot of K-pop is very popular all over Asia and of course in Japan. And of course Gangam style became very popular recently. It's also worth noting that Korea have become almost like world leaders in online gaming systems. The online game for Dragonball is being developed in South Korea.

The way this video is put together and the music and all the stuff that was shown, makes me very happy. It gives me something to really look forward to and the WiiU is actually looking attractive now. I want to point out though, the areas do look quite generic. obviously this is an early build so they will have a lot of work to do on it yet, but I Thought it was something we need to note. It's not ready and not polished so we'll be waiting a while I think.

I may make an announcement soon. Something personal, something pretty big, probably won't effect the site really, but may change some subtle things... dunno. I need time to think about it before I feel comfortable talking about it to others. thanks, heh heh ww

I as just really stoked at the introduction of the idea of additional rangers! That is something they didn't cover in the first season so it'll be pretty damn awesome. I hope they can bring it back down somehow, they kept getting more and more ridiculous and it was a situation of always trying to top the last episode. I hope they can adopt a different plot device this time around.
