Definitely a bit better than the last teaser... Still not 100% sold, but at least looks like it could be decent.

 

The few quick shots of Dr. Doom have me slightly worried, and the one line "We should help people" etc... seemed a bit too cheesy/not needed.

 

But I do have to admit, it does look better than the trailers for the original Fantastic Four movie... Which was going more for comic camp. This one definitely feels like they are going the way the X-Men did. IE: It is the characters, but without the majority of the campyness or more comic book designs.

 

So there is now hope. At least for it to be decent. I still do not see hw a Fantastic Four movie could be "Great" simply because I've never cared for them at all.

I could do another rant about this... but I'll spare you all.

Looks intresting, it seems that the story is based off of the ultimate marvel stories if I'm not mistaken. I think I need to see more of the feel before I pass judgement. It looks good but I need to see more of the characters and the story.

 

I assume that the place they go to is the Negative Zone. That or the Monster Graveyard from Ultraman.

this reminds me of first class. I like it.

 

I especially like the other dimension thing. I think that makes it feel more in line with modern beliefs, rather than cosmic rays. extra dimensional properties does feel more natural.

I am cautiously optomistic that film will turn out okay. I hope that the next will show thing saying "It's clobber in time!"

The Fantastic Four are Marvel Comics' first superheroes. It's true that the original Human Torch, Namor the Submariner and Captain America precede them, but they were not made for Marvel Comics but acquired (the magazine in which they appeared was called 'Marvel Comics' but it belonged to a different publishing house; Marvel Comics properly appeared in 1961).

 

They were different from DC's heroes, and even their hero teams. The main difference being that the Fantastic Four are a (fairly dysfunctional) family. Originally, Reed was the older, somewhat aloof husband, Sue was the younger, put-upon wife, and Ben and Johnny functioned as quibbling sons (even though their actual relationship was different, in that Johnny was Susan's brother and Ben no blood relation at all). Later, the dynamic changed when Franklin, Susan and Reed's son was born, and Ben and Johnny had to 'grow up' some. But the fact remains, these people were a family. It's the entire basis for their comic book function. There's basically four classes of superhero in Marvel comics: the heroes who function as a team, like the Avengers, brought together by choice; the heroes who function as a group by necessity, like the various X-teams, brought together by genetics; the lone heroes who do not fit in teams at all; and the Fantastic Four, who are a family. The only other group similar to them is Power Pack, who are siblings, but even they exclude the parents from the equation.

 

Now, one aspect the 2005 movie nailed very well was the familial aspect. The writers had read the comics, and it showed. While Doom was kind of shoe-horned in, they maintained the pattern : He wanted to start a family of his own with Susan, but was thwarted.

 

It goes out the window for the new movie. It's exemplary that Susan is still Johnny's brother, but not by blood - she is adopted. Reed runs away for a year. The rest of the team is pulled in by the army.

 

Now... I have actually not seen the movie (and I'm not the only one) but I have yet to see anybody describe the movie as 'good'. It's a box office bomb, with an estimated loss projected at about 80 million dollars. The 2005 movie made over twice as much. Which just goes to show that 'grim and gritty' does not work if you're trying to make a movie about a superhero family.

 

In fact, I would not be the first to argue that the best Fantastic Four movie is in fact 'The Incredibles'.

The Incredibles IS the best "Fantastic Four" of pretty much everything.

The Rotten Tomatoes critic rating is now 9%. The audience score - ie, out of the people who already paid to see it - is 20%. On IMDb, it's 4.1/10. Expected loss for the movie is between 80 and 100 million dollars.

 

I think it's safe to say you are too kind.

I haven't even seen the whole movie, just snippets on YouTube.  But every alarm bell in my brain told me this movie wasn't going to work.

It felt too angsty, too dark, too...too WRONG.

They should've had someone like Brad Bird do an FF movie.

If you want to see how a good comic book movie should be done just watch GotG or Antman.

Just saw it. I'd have to say as a movie it wasn't awful, but it was pretty dark and negative... and then the ending seemed sawn-off and with some very forced positivity in it.

 

The visuals are pretty nice, and the actors did their damnedest... but this is not a Fantastic Four movie. That simple. In short, everything that has been said, confirmed.

 

And Trank's claim that there was an infinitely better version of this somewhere is laughable.

It seemed to me like they were trying to force the F4 into the XMen franchise they've created. It just didn't work and Doom could have literally being just a guy off the street and still be just as dull a villain. They forgot the main rule of story telling, Hero movies are only as good as their main villain (they forgot that in Iron Man 3 too but even that movies villain wasn't as bad as F4 2105's Doom).

But the main villain of Iron Man 3 was scary.
