Yes you did not read wrong, apparently Lionsgate is teaming up with saban to reboot the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in a Live action movie. what kind of reboot it will be remains to be seen but I think this is worth talking about so what do you guys think? what will be the future of the series if this succeeds? will they continue using sentai footage for future seasons or will they make complete original material? who do you think is the director most suitable for this project? honestly? I think Guillermo Del Toro is the best one for this film on the top of my head, even tho people have mixed feelings about pacific rim I think we can all agree that the Giant robot vs Giant monster action scenes are right up del toro's forte. leave your thoughts below.

EDIT:

confirmed cast:

Executive Producer - Roberto Orci (Star Trek)

Screen Writers - Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (X-men first class, Thor, )

Lionsgate is a low budget studio, but they really put effort into their movies. So expect to see a movie with average special effects, bad acting, but great atmosphere. They also tend to actually stick to the source material, but that depends on the director.

I wonder if some of the original rangers would cameo. I would so laugh if all the available rangers had some kind of appearance, even if it was only as running civilians.

Highly doubtful that this will revive the franchise.  The first movie was actually way worse than the Power Ranger series itself.  I mean seriously, half baked CGI?  They should at least put up a decent special effects even if the story isn't that great.  Look at all the Sentai movies created all these years.  I can boldly say that the story part is a bit wanting, but fans don't see it for the story, but because they want to see their favorite characters collaboration.  It's the perfect excuse to lump all the different series into one screen.

Now if lionsgate can pull this off, maybe, just maybe, they can revive the franchise without having to borrow much stock footage.  I think it would be wise to make a movie out of all the different Power Rangers that appeared in the franchise into one single movie, like how the Japanese guys does it.  But I still doubt that will happen.  Saban has always been borrowing materials from the oriental counterpart for as long as I can remember.

Oh and to add, I think that the franchise would endure up to this time if Saban didn't use stock footage.  It would have been better if they copied instead of used the original series, then they slowly evolved into their own version of Power Rangers.  The Power Rangers actually had a lot of potential, given the following they had in their original run.  They relied too much on the original version that they didn't even consider how the fans viewed the source material.  Such a shame really.  It's not very difficult to come up with your own version of the power rangers.  Look at where Sentai is now.  Trains?  I'm willing to bet that some of our hardcore friends in this forum could come up with a better concept for a sentai series.

They should have hired a chief creative officer to manage the direction of the series.  I can go on all day about what went wrong and how they should have done things, but that's a subject for another topic, which I'm sure a lot of our friends here have a lot to say about.

Saban had the original power rangers..... pretty much fired.

Walter Jones, Thuy Trang(deceased) and Austin St. John, they wanted more money so they went on strike. In the end they lost their job. It's unknown whether it was their doing when it comes to quitting or whether they were just fired. However their agent had suggested for them to go on strike because their agent wanted them to get a raise however the agent's plan backfired. The agent thought Walter, Thuy and Austin were too important to the show to the point that Haim Saban wouldn't dare to replace them.

Amy Jo Johnson had left on her own. Her contract was up and she wasn't interested in renewing it. Amy Jo did feel that it was time to move on and wanted to broaden her horizons. They had planned a previous ending but it didn't work out so they had to create the 'Dear John' letter that "Kimberly" wrote to 'Tommy' during Zeo.

David Yost, there are various reasons as to David's departure. 1 side states that he just stormed off the set one day and never returned. Another side within the crew states that David left because they weren't going to pay him his bonus anymore which they gave to a lot of the original cast members. However David stated that he left because some members within the crew harassed him due to his sexual orientation since his sexual orientation is that of liking other men.

Steve Cardenas, he was getting bored and his work ethic, even according to him, was not the best which is why he left as soon as he was given the opportunity to leave hence why Blake Foster was chosen as Justin to be the new Blue Ranger.

Johnny Bosch, Catherine Sutherland, Nakia and Jason David Frank, Jason Frank wanted to leave however once he told the people in charge this, they convinced him to stay on until some of Turbo and promised to write him out during the season which is why he stuck around for a bit longer. Jason is the only one that wanted to leave. Nakia, Catherine and Johnny were not interested in leaving, it was the Producers' decision to replace all of the veterans at the same time considering Jason was leaving.

In regards to Blake leaving, it was because of his Mom not wanting him to continue working because she was not happy with Saban Entertainment was so they had no choice but to write him off.

Ah, JDF. The greatest Power Ranger of all time.

I'm very skeptical about this one. I mean, Michael Bay couldn't f**k this up if he tried... Grass exploding just by posing? He's the man for it haha...

I wonder who would play Zordon (if they're going down that road)

A Green Ranger movie saga would be the best bet.

Jason Frank wanting to leave? I really doubt that. Any of the behind the scenes video's show him pretty damn stoked about being the new popular character. He relished in it, used to go around saying "green ranger" repeatedly, obviously had fun there. Also remember David Yost looking at him as if burning a hole into the back of his head. A shame seeing them apparently not getting along since I liked those two the most out of the cast. Billy was an awesome nerd that I wanted to be, and Jason the cool hero that I would of liked to aspire to.

Anyway's this possible reboot... I'd know what to do with it for the most part if I was a director, keep it faithful to the original source material and expand on it with the quality known in hollywood. In the hands of someone else who wasn't a fan or respects fans... so be damned.

Yeah, that was early on in his career. Jason wanted to leave during TURBO. Frank's character became the Red Zeo Ranger. The following year in Power Rangers: Turbo he became the first Red Turbo Ranger. During mid-season Frank and fellow cast members Johnny Yong Bosch, Nakia Burrise and Catherine Sutherland agreed to leave and were replaced .So no, he did not  want to leave during "the very first series". Of course he's excited...he just got hired, he just got a job in the entertainment industry. It probably just got old and he wanted to explore more options....I don't know....maybe MMA. If you work in one area for too long, you get sick of it.

I  look up my sources before I state them in a possible debate. Mid season, Jason left "TURBO" (Not the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers- The Very First 3 Seasons.....way later, but Power Rangers- TURBO) and was replaced....this is a fact. Actors eventually want to move on to something else.Thats all I have to say.

Here's my source and thanks.

Actors typically doesn't want to be typecast.  That's the main reason they leave a franchise.  As everyone is aware, Leonard Nimoy will forever be known as Spock.  That's what most actors want to avoid.

As for the movie, it would be a great pull if they managed to convince all the previous actors to reprise their roles, mash them up together and see where it gets.  As for the Giant robots, I'm more inclined on seeing them the traditional way.  CGI just don't cut it.  It makes them look so fake.  This is already a decade old technology so I don't see any reason why Hollywood wouldn't be able to replicate, or at least improve upon it.

Yes, I can certainly see that happening. After so many years it isn't surprising. Did not mean to provoke any debate, just seemed out of character from what I've seen over the years.

those are some pretty good names. I like those writers, I really enjoyed both those films. star trek has good production too, although I hated the direction.

never said he did, I just put the names of the people confirmed who will be working on the PR reboot, what they will be doing and what their previous work was.

As much as we grew up on 5 colored heroes in spandex, we have to admit the SS and PR franchise is losing its former popularity. Even if Liongate or Legendary pictures revives MMPR, it's going to be a box office flop.
