Guyver

Out of Control

Hi everyone, I'm Martin from Rogue Productions. A poster on our YouTube pointed me in the direction of this cool forum as you might be interested in our recently finished production.

A few weeks ago we published Rogue Productions' Guyver Out of Control fan dub, after 8 months of none-stop work (and a few years of false starts). It's had a fairly warm reception so far, and a commenter said that you Guy(vers) at Anime Legends might like to take a look at it.

Feedback is more than welcome and encouraged!

I hope you enjoy, and please look forward to Rogue Productions' next project, Dragon's Century.

I would like to thanks all the cast that took part in this eight month long journey. Everyone really worked hard to bring this production to life, and I really appreciate everything they've done!

Also if you have any suggestions of Anime you would like to see dubbed let me know. But only if it's at least 10 years old and never received an official English dub -_^.

Cool. I've never seen this particular video before. For your next dub, I'd suggest Tekkaman Blade; it's never gotten a real English dub. Not one that was unedited, anyway. Of course, it's also 49 episodes long, so maybe just the Twin Blood special?

Thanks a lot Kenji Murakami, glad to help spread this Anime to a new audience.

I loved Tekkaman Blade growing up! I still want to make Blades armour one day lol. Even though it was edited, it still had a dub so I won't be able to do the series. There's really two reasons, I don't want to step on actors toes (even if they never know about it) and it's to avoid at least a little copyright trouble ^^;. To be honest, I have actually done the Twin Blood Special before some years ago before I formed Rogue Productions good and proper. However it was removed from YouTube due to a copyright complaint by the Technoman owners (even though they never released the specials in English, just subbed on the DVD ¬_¬). I should really try getting in contact with them... Also it was ages ago, I still had (and still do have) a lot to learn about acting and editing. So it's a little embarrassing to watch ^^;.

But at any rate, thank you for the suggestion. I would really have loved to work on the series too!

I watched a bit of the beginning of this last night. up to the bit where he turns into guyver.

I really enjoyed it.

I have to say, I love this anime. I always wanted to watch it properly. I only ever got to see it on a laser disc with really bad subtitles. watching this now with natural dialogue it was just incredible.

I wanted to point out that malmot is not a name, it was a scornful retort 'marmot' the equivalent in the west being 'guinea pig'. but you have completed the project so it's not like you can change it and a lot of people also think malmot is his name. so no biggie.

gonna watch the rest later on. it takes me to a special place. a place i've only dreamed of. a place where guyver is real.

Wow! That was great!

Sho sounded so perfect. the voice effects were great and it sounded very modern. I was expecting voices and recording in the style of the original but you all really brought it up to the present. Props on that.

My only nitpick in terms of voices was the monotony of Valcuria's. It wasn't until the fight that I really felt engaged by her. And using music from other guyver adaptations was a little strange, but i don't think it detracted from the experience. i do love the other guyver soundtracks.

again, great work!!

Welcome Rogue Angel,

Congratulations on your first Anime project. Thank you very much for working on dubbing this classic animation title. The voice actors and background sound effects were very close to the original animation. I have read from your YouTube comments on your video that the voice portrayals within certain areas of the movie could have been done a little better (i.e., zoanoid screams). Considering that this OVA was developed from the middle of the 1980s, the emotional vocal expressions from each of the characters were conveyed nicely and very accurately with the original voice actors. I appreciate the tones and portrayals that your actors had used in being close to the original voice acting in this Anime title. I would not have them done in any other way. Thank you for all of your hard work, and the amount of time that you and your team have spent. It was a project well done.

Hi Ryuki, thanks a lot of taking the time to watch, I hope you enjoy the rest of the production just as much as the start.

I see your point on Malmot, I did know it was a derogatory term and tried to relay that in the performance. I guess I kinda failed on that point ^^;.

Still I'm glad that what we've done took you to a really special place, that's what makes it all worth while.

Thanks!

Yeah it was good but sho sounds like a wuss again and the rest just don't put enough feeling in the voice acting, other then that its pretty cool.

Hi Eric Dacosta, that's a more than valid opinion, and thank you for it ^^.

I did intentionally depict Sho as a wuss, as that's how I saw him. At the start of Guyver, he's more terrified than anything about this power that's invaded his body, and I really felt that was one of the key elements of Out of Control. It's not until he 'awakens' after his trot through a desert (which I wonder how he found one in Japan lol) that he starts to become confidant with the Guyver and relies on its power. Though I still tried to keep some of his whining school boy nature there, as I didn't want too much of a dramatic change of character. A sudden change might have been awkward in such a short space of time.

It's really a shame that Out of Control is so short, that its hard to show more of Sho and Valcuria's story. But there are the later Guyver series, which the official dubs do a much better job than I at telling that story.

I also take responsibility as the Producer and Director for the other performers short coming. They all tried hard, but if that's how you feel, then I fell short at bringing out their full potential. However that's something I'll take on board and continue to try and develop as I make future productions.

Thanks again for your honest opinion, and I'll be sure to remember it for the future.

Hi Bio-Boosted Dude, woah thanks so much for the kind words!

I tried to keep the production as close to the original as I could, but did add a few things here and there to make it worth watching for those that have already seen the subbed version. For example the vocal effects etc. However as you pointed out, I did want the vocal work itself to have a modern quality. Whilst I LOVE cheese and old retro Anime, I felt trying to mimic that feeling wouldn't work out so well for the project.

I did want Veridia to seem a little disinterested as Valcuria, the position makes it easy to make people squirm and she's almost lost interest in that. She wants a challenge to test and prove herself, and the appearance of the Guyver and her own bonding with a unit has given her that chance. Thus she finally has a chance to let loss when confronting Sho. However I can see what you mean looking back at the production. Maybe I should have had her perform some scenes differently. Again, something I will keep in mind as I continue to produce more projects in the future.

As for the music, I tried to use as much of the original Out of Control OST as I could, sadly there were 3/4 places where I couldn't find the original track and had to improvise. I did try to mimic the feeling of the original soundtrack as much as I could. and I do hope it doesn't detract too much for that.

And thanks once again for the great feedback!

Hi Guyver Four! Thanks for welcoming me to the forum, and thank you for the congrats on our first release ^^.

You don't need to thank me, but I do appreciate the very kind words. Knowing that the work everyone put into the project has been appreciated so greatly by such dedicated fans like yourself really makes the whole thing worth while! And I'm sure everyone will be deeply moved by you kind sentiments. I'm really glad you feel that our work has done well to live up to the original voice actors work, it's great to hear!

I hope our future projects will be just as entertaining for you and everyone else.

Thanks again!

I have to say Rogue Angel that you and all involved with the project did a fantastic job! I thought Martin Perks portrayed Sho quite well and that his voice sounded really cool as a Guyver. However, I do have to ask did you change the sound effect for the Guyver's steps because I own a copy of the Guyver Out of Control on VHS and I remember the Guyver's steps sounded like clanky metallic steps?

Again amazing job!

Wow!

i'll be honest, at ths point i havent watched it all but just skipped to some dialogue and it sounds amazing, just as if it was dubbed in he 80's / 90's - no offence thats a good thing for anime to me.

i'll give a full watch some time without a doubt.

Thanks to you and all who worked on the project!!!! :)

Hi Guyver0, thanks so much for the feedback! And thanks for the comment on Sho, I'm really happy that he sounded okay.

As for the Guyver steps I did change them, originally it sounded like a metal boat hull was being stepped on (even on cement). As I had to manually replace every single sound effect I had to search for a sound to replace it. At first I tried capturing a moment from the original where there was no BGM or SFX behind the sound, but it sounded repetitive even when I messed with the pitch and volume. So I tried searching online for a sound, however the metal sounds didn't have the impact I wanted. So I had a look around some of my old fav Animes and 'borrowed' the sound from a boomer in Bubblegum Crisis lol XD.

Wow!

Hi Aether, even though you haven't watched it completely I'm glad you're impressed by the parts that you watched so far. And lol, don't worry I don't take sounding like 80's/90's Anime as an offence. Personally they're some of my fav Animes but I don't mind a lot of newer ones either (I tend to be quite open minded. It has to be really bad for me not like it.)

I hope you enjoy the full production just as much when you watch it, and I know the rest of the guys appreciate your kind words!

Again, it's been great hearing such positive feedback from such hardcore fans! Thank you all!

I don't want to have too many pinned threads, but I have added this thread to the "important threads and exceptional stuff" thread because you have a point kenji :)

This is a fantastic job. Really well put together, though a bit odd because of the different quality of the recordings and acting level, but comparatively better than some of the dubs I grew up with.

Hi V Guyver thanks a lot for the comment! I know what you mean about the recording quality etc. Sadly tech wise not all of the guys could readily get to a high(er) quality mic. But trust me, these guys were the best that auditioned (shudders at the memory of some of the failed auditions. Think X-Factor failures. On a web cam mic. With no actual acting. Your about half way there lol.) For those that did land a part, I think for the demands I placed on them they did pretty good and I'm grateful for their work ^^. But I'm still glad you enjoyed it and think it's better than some of the older dubs lol XD.

Don't worry, I don't fault you for any of those reasons, most would of failed in the project, you folks actually pulled it off with some dub quality that other studio's fail at. I've had similar experiences with dealing with Mic work as well, I found that even with a video cam mic, you can produce some nice results.

The wiring is the second biggest problem, since most wires and extension audio cords have an amplifier built in, you want one without to cut back on the humming audio background noise. Another thing is choosing the best room in the house, the bigger the room, the better in most cases, but some room like a small bathroom may be better because of wall material. I's always good to get samples in different areas.

As for professional mic, you can splurge, but you Don't have too. There are always garage bands who eventually have to pawn good equipment. Hunt and shop the places you know they'll auction, you might get some fantastic audio equipment really cheap.

As for me, I don't do much voice work, I don't have the time or training, but I am usually used as the announcement guy in my store, including pre-recordings, with crappy audio tools, and have had to improvise. Also used to dub characters for Mugen characters. But this is what I can relay from my experiences. Maybe I should make time for this sort of stuff again.
