McAvoy Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Something occured to me while I was watching some shows on space and Mars. Anywayit hit me whether or not a single Matrix could terraform Mars making it Earth-like. Do you think it's possible or too much for a single Matrix to do? Quote
Destroyer Guyver Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 Definatly possible. Could it do so in a reasonable amount of time however? I wouldn't think so. Quote
Juggernought Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 I think it would take more than 1 matrix to accomplish that. Maybe 2 or 3 would be needed in order to totally revive a pretty much dead world. Imagine the amount of energy and resources it would take to bring life back to that planet and to the state that earth is currently. Quote
Aranor Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 I would say it depends on the method and degree of terraforming. Judging from the scene when Greg used it to rebuild his getaway on the small island (I forget which story at the moment), it was able to rebuild the scene in a relatively short period of time. Considering the variety of molecules required, the fact the atoms were made virtually from energy, and the matrix was operating with interference from the W'kar element resting in hyperspace this is quite the achievement. The matrix could make some devices capable of doing the terraforming rather than itself. I am thinking the floating sphere in the movie White Dwarf. Which of course I can not find an image of. Seeing as how Mars does not have an atmosphere or life that we know of which needs to be destroyed this is a good chunk of the work already done. Have the devices begin setting up the proper gasses while the matrix begins forming the necessary magnetic fields to hold them in and breathable air could be achieved relatively quickly depending on the number of gas emitting devices. Water being two gasses could be created with the devices. Plant life might take some time but breathable air would be the primary goal. Sustaining it a long term goal. Quote
*zeo Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 Breaks down to time and creativity... some methods will work faster than others but the key to terraforming a planet is life and a energy source to power the process. Quote
McAvoy Posted April 17, 2010 Author Posted April 17, 2010 Also it's size. Mars' crust isn't seperated like Earths. Which means the crust can't recycle itself. Also, Mars is smaller so the planet will cool much faster than Earth. Basically, if we had a 1,000 trillion dollars to throw away, we have the tehcnology to terraform Mars right now. Though it will take centuries though. In the end, a terraformed Mars will still die again long before Earth does. So using the Matrix we could have it terraform quickly as possible using what it has now, or go all out and basically make it into Earth 2. Which means it may need a moon too. Quote
Rivyn Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 Wouldn't it just be simpler to create an artifical shield around the planet to protect it from solar winds and such? Way I understand it most of Mars harsh enviroment stems from the fact that it has no protection against the Sun, so even if we made the planet liveable we would still be faced with that fact so wouldn't it just be easier to build or create using the matrix a shield to protect the planet from these "Attacks" and have humans simply live in BioDomes or underground cities? Quote
Zoaknight Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 Well, I think the idea is that the Matrix could be used to alter not only the face of Mars but also its atmosphere and weather...Basically make it habitable for life in every way shape and form possible (and I honestly doubt that terraforming is beyond the creator's knowledge and ability to make, so the Matrix likely contains the knowledge as to how to make that happen). The real question is how long would it take to pull that off and if Dreadnought would be able to comprehend the info pertaining to terraforming, and if he'd have a motive to terraform Mars in the first place what with the war on earth Quote
