Ah I thought the scorched rim after the megasmasher stood out to me in particular while watching it and i couldn't pinpoint why - so that's the other extra special effect. I watched a few clips of the original cut and the quality is far better than i expected. it has a noticably darker image but the quality is otherwise very good. i had read conflicting things, such as it basically being dvd quality but i definitely don't remember my dvd looking like that. the enhanced version is good but i would've been pretty satisfied even if the original cut were the only version on there to be honest. my only gripe now is that it feels like a missed opportunity to put the 4:3 version on there but i feel like people are allergic to anything that's not widescreen these days.

Watched my copy yesterday and while I was pretty worried about the fact it was an AI upscale I have to say the majority of the film does look good. the quality of a few shots is inconsistent and faces look weird at times (Crane and Cori suffer the worst) but the suits look great every shot they're in, which is where the real meat of the film lies. I feel like it was a bit misleading to say that the enhanced version had 'new special effects' though. as far as i could tell the only new special effect was the black smoke i pointed out in my earlier post. i also take back what i said about the cover art, its grown on me and the art cards inside are very nice. the reverse artwork of the guyver/guyver zoanoid being used for the discs is unfortunate though. i stand by my opinion that it's unfortunate that it made its way onto the release at all. anyway the extras are also lots of fun. some great BTS photos and artwork on show. Very funny that the Steve Wang interview features a spread from the Advocacy scanlations when he's discussing the manga. wonder how that ended up there!

Wow long time no see Mecha! I cancelled my amazon order last week because it said it was coming on the 24th or something. i just ordered from HMV and it should be arriving today now. would advise you to do the same if you're desperate to receive it quickly as it looks like it isn't even available on amazon anymore(!)

Yeah I've also seen some of the japanese fans' confusion (upset?) by the way its been announced. A small few are choosing to not believe it until an official announcement happens via japanese channels... I'd like him to pass it on to someone else but I also feel like if he was confident he could find someone he would have done so at some point in the last 10 years. On another note, because the topic of his assistants has been so pertinent to the hiatus and to this revelation, here's a picture of him with his assistants from 1987: "A scene from the workspace where assistants and staff are all mixed together. Surprisingly, the two main assistants are girls." Taken from Shonen Captain Jr Vol. 2 which has a few pages of behind the scenes of his early guyver days. i picked this up some time ago. that's takaya in the back with the white cloth on his head.

I read a review for the blu-ray a little while back that made mention to him "not taking up the pen again" so am surprised it took so long for anyone else to post this. I'm obviously really sad but i'm sure Takaya himself is even moreso that these were the circumstances that it ended on. Maybe the advert for a new assistant wasn't because anyone died but because he just needed an additional pair of hands to help out towards the end.

Hey, those are both really cool! How is the art print? I remember the item listing saying it was a special kind of reproduction that reproduced some of the texture of the original drawing. Was it true? Does it have a bit of a tactile feel to it?

enjoyed the trailer and excited to see this in hd but not crazy about that cover art, the proportions are super weird and visually it's not a great representation of the film's vibe. never liked that artwork that is used for the reverse side either - was always under the impression it was ai given the loose details and bizarre visual noise. if it's not ai then from an image-making POV there's objectively a lot of weird stuff going on in it. but i guess there was that really weird cover the first film got where the arms out guyver didn't even look like the guyver so there's precedent for weird guyver covers. oh well anyway, pretty interesting to note that the black smoke coming from the landscape at the beginning of the trailer is not in the original version of the film. hopefully there aren't too many other instances of excessive zoom in, though if this is a limiation due to film deterioration around the edges then fair enough.

Still looks like lots of fun! The loafers on Malmot are a nice attention to detail from his OVA design. No way it's coming out this summer though

Bruno Patrick as Malmot is pretty neat. I wasn't into their short film to be honest but this looks like it will be a lot of fun and worth watching for sure

Is there any way to make it look basically how it was before? the main forum page is a bit cumbersome to scroll down with such large thumbnails instead of the simple list and having post previews in the sub boards makes the page a bit overwhelming.

Looks like there really was a crazy number of original illustrations on display - looks like basically everything that was in the Illustration Chronicle and, judging from some tweets, some shonen captain covers that have never been compiled anywhere and manuscript pages. very exciting stuff. the BTS photos he posted on the following post are also very nice. wasn't really expecting any new media for guyver's 40th so this will do nicely. hopefully the OST finally sees the light of day. that thread that Les Claypool was posting in sounded very promising all those years ago so hopefully this is it. also some pretty nuts camera trickery to make the rhino zoanoid look as tall as he did on screen!

We used to have scans of the Chuang Yi covers on the old wiki's merchandise page (still visible on the wayback machine) but the higher res versions didn't get saved, so I've scanned in my dust jackets for anyone that might like to get a better look at them. I'd like to manage your expectations and say I'm pretty sure he's just referring to the fact that figures are still coming out. As in the release of Guyver figures is "still going"

That Dark Hero mystery prototype looks great. So nice to see all the details of the suit so clearly. Here's some other pics I found on twitter of Smile Fest, including some better shots of Takaya's and Max Watanabe's words. That last board with text talks about the publishing of the old vinyl BFC line and various photos that were taken to re-create scenes from the manga. I wonder where those images were originally published. You can use Google Lens to get some very rough translations of various captions which is pretty fun!

Ooph, that's sad. I wonder if it was even really worth their time publishing it over there anyway so not terribly surprising. Fingers crossed they pick it back up when it resumes in Japan

I'm surprised that's a recent illustration, the proportions of the guyver look very much like the early style of the 80s. at any rate, it's very nice to see that there's at least one new illustration in the book - he's still got it!

Could you guys maybe post a pic of an example of one that has only been seen split between two pages? It's a bit disappointing to hear there's nothing new but at least Guyver is getting a moment. I'll have a think about buying it at some point over the next couple months.
