username Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 So I have been coming to this board every month or so just to see if there is any new developments and to check how the story is progressing. This is the first time I have posted simply because I really did not have anything to say. Then today I saw something that peeked my interest so I would like to see what other people think. So I was just kinda looking things up on the internet just random stuff, so eventually I look up David Hayter, I check out his twitter looking for stuff he has said about Metal Gear and how he was discontinued as the voice of snake. Also just seeing if he made any passing comments about the Guyver. I just like to see people mentioning Guyver, it is always cool to see that other people enjoy it as much as I do. So to cut to the chase I came upon a tweet of his that made rather excited and curious. So on August 10th which apparently when they were shooting Dark Hero 20 years ago. His tweet says that he met with Steve Wang and discussed Guyver 3. Now do not confuse this with a tweet he made in January where he says at one time he pitched the idea to Wang, but something about the rights being messed up made them unable to pursue the project. So this really makes me wonder if he was serious or if he was just meeting with the guy, maybe they are friends or something. But he did say that he was discussing Guyver 3, so i figure if he was being serious and not just kidding, that this actually might happen. I assume the problem with the rights got sorted out it has probably been several years since the pitch he had made previously to Wang. I assume it was a while ago since he refers to it in the past tense. And I would figure if it was recent he would have mentioned that he recently made this pitch. So if anyone is as interested as I am check out his twitter and look for august 10th. I do not have a twitter and I think making one for the sole purpose of asking him would look strange, and he probably wouldn't answer. I figure if it was me and some one twitted me that had no other tweets follows 0 and has 0 followers would seem a bit fishy. So basically what does anyone think, personally I want it to be true. Granted the live action films are not that great. But I think this one would be much better simply because Hayter Would probably right it. He has written several movies that are adapted from comic books, and did so quite well. Watchmen xmen 1 and 2 not the crappy 3d one. 5 Quote
Bio-Boosted Dude Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 https://twitter.com/DavidBHayter/status/366447188311683074/photo/1 Wow, that's really weird! But really cool. How out of the blue can you get. It would be awesome if this was a sign of something to come. Who owned the rights to live action Guyver anyway that messed it all up? 2 Quote
LordSpleach Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Maybe we should twitter campaign for an interview? Though I don't think this is completely out of the blue because for a while David Hayter's profile pic was Guyver 1's silhouette. Plus if the right are finally getting settled, it would be the perfect since he does have a movie production company Dark Hero Studios, so that him and Steve could start to make it. Quote
*Jess♥ Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 I honestly think Mr Hayter wants to keep a distance from this website because of what we do. Although we ensure that people buy Guyver, it is still a grey area so I think he wants to keep from associating with us. I have kinda spoken to him in the past but he's pretty busy anyway and the MGS fandom probably bug him way too much so maybe he doesn't have much time. Anyway, I sent him a tweet asking if this photo was recent. I'll check back regularly to see if he replies. Quote
Cannibal Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Thanks username, nice find. --- +kinda related photo also from the recent tweet, David says it is from Dark Hero's backstage: https://twitter.com/DavidBHayter/status/367417752480268288/photo/1 1 Quote
username Posted September 2, 2013 Author Posted September 2, 2013 I that if the rights business is cleared up than this could easily happen. I figure it would be a direct to video release. Maybe be shown at some festivals or comicon and similar conventions. The ability to get funding for the project would be the hard part. On wikipedia it says Dark Hero had a budget of $900,000. So with inflation factored in and the desire for it to be much better than the previous attempts. I figure that if the get 2 mill it should turn out good. Now while this is not chump change by any means it is small for a movie budget and quite do able. I figure they could get money from a couple sources. First start a kickstart campaign to raise money, like they did for a Veronic Mars movie, which I think we can all agree is much less cool than the Guyver. David Hayter has a decent amount of fame that he could use to spread the word, especially among the video game community. Then if they could get in touch with Yoshiki who steve wang worked with on the 2nd film. See if he could help with the story, but also see if he could get shonen to either throw in some funding or put something in the magazine with info on the project, this would help generate international interest to increase the effectiveness of the kickstart campaign. Then sell the distribution rights to Funimation or similar companies, So that is my idea maybe I'm just delusional and just assume that a lot of people know about the Guyver and love it as much as I do. But hey you gotta have dreams right, and I can always hold out hope that one day the Guyver will get the recognition it deserves. I assume everyone here shares my sentiments, but I am pretty sure that sadly we would be in the minority. Quote
*guyverfan Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 this would be nice, but another straight to video movie, i think not. we were so lucky that darkhero turned out as good as it did, otherwise no one would even mention its exsistance, much like the first guyver movie.......i think......there was a previous movie?........no, i could be wrong!......i don't think it had anything to do with guyver.......... i've mentioned before that a third movie would really need to be a start to a franchise of movies, takaya needs to be onboard to give it some direction aswell. it needs to move beyond people in customised latex/rubber suits and you'll be lucky to get atmost 10mins of high quality produced cgi from a top company for 2mill! budget needs to be 100mill+, f&f 6 had a budget 160mill for f@#'s sake and toystory3 200mill! hayter has come a long way in a short 20years since darkhero, no doubt he's amassed a close group of high profile friends and connections who all could make this happen. he has his spies everywhere reading boards and blogs, fingers, toes(and even testicles) crossed that he notices and reads this one. 1 Quote
username Posted September 3, 2013 Author Posted September 3, 2013 I agree with you 100% about needing to be a reboot. They certainly have distance themselves from the previous films. More the mark Hamill installment. They would pretty much doom it to fail by linking it to the other movies. It is like how they rebooted spiderman, and more so Judge Dredd. The Dredd movie would have done even worse if it was billed as a sequel to the Stalone movie. But on the matter of the budget there is no way in hell they could secure 200 mill, I think even 10 would be a stretch. I can't think of any company that would dumb 200 mill into a property that is not well know in the US, and what little recognition it has a decent bit is negative, once again thank you Mark Hamill. Think about what happend to the John Carter film. Big budget for a sci fi movie that has it's basis in source material that not alot of people knew about, and look what happened. Mega bomb and the studio lost millions. So there definitely would be an aversion to giving a movie that big of a budget. The sci fi genre is getting alot o hate these days, or atleast it seems to me that it is. Look at Pacific Rim a movie really liked but it seemed like everyone in the entertainment industry wanted it to fail. Even now what it has clearly become a successful film people still have a negative attitude towards it. Which pisses me off to no end, because they will say a movie about giant robots is stupid. But the 6th movie about douchebags driving cars in a series that pretty much believe things like a plot and character development are not needed for a movie. That is smegging pure genius. But the reason movies like ff6 and toy story get money thrown at them is because there is a built in audience, kids will always make their parents take them to toy story and mongoloids will always go to ff movies, it is the sad truth. And the Guyver just doesnt have that built in audience. Quote
*Jess♥ Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 what about new franchises? Avatar was pretty successful I think. There are a few things that have been marketed well and not necessarily popular before hand. hancock, oblivion, elysium, the matrix etc. I think the guyver is a strong concept and I think that is what is important. The fact it has so many different media is testament to that. What is needed is a strong script and contacts. these are things that David Hayter should have in abundance. Quote
username Posted September 3, 2013 Author Posted September 3, 2013 Avatar was Jim Cameron's baby, once you make films like Titanic and the other films he has made that were blockbuster cash cows funding is easy to come by. He has a proven track record. The Matrix was the Woj brothers who I think had a 3 film deal with Warner Brothers, Matrix being the 2nd. Also when project have actors attached to them that helps a whole lot. Keanu in the Matrix. The other movies you mentioned starred Will Smith who until after earth had not been in a movie that grossed less than 100 mill since pre Independence day. The Oblivion is Tom Cruise, and Elysium Matt Damon all proven drawers for movies. So if Daniel Day Lewis wants to be Barcas and Donnie Yen comes on as Lisker, then ya I mean open the flood gates. I just will keep my expectations low because then it is more likely I will be surprised. As opposed to if I had high expectations and would more than likely be disappointed. I mean if I had it my way ya give them 500 million and see what happens but I just dont see that happening. You can make damn good movies for less than 25 mill. Woochi is a damn good Korean action movie I just say 12mill still very good movie. Detective Dee was 20 mill. Oldboy was was 3 mill outstanding movie, I know that last one is kind of out of place because A Guyver movie would need much more special FX. And conversely you get a ton of money and make a terrible movie, I dont think I need to name examples just think about any movie that lost a studio 100 mil plus. Quote
username Posted September 3, 2013 Author Posted September 3, 2013 Also Robocop 12 mill and Buckaroo Banzai 17 common theme get peter weller on board. Quote

LordSpleach Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 I would cast Donnie Yen as Murakami, personally. Though for a semi-joke(good acting, but doesn't physically look the part), I would have Christopher Walken as Richard Guyot! Quote
username Posted September 4, 2013 Author Posted September 4, 2013 I was just throwin out names donnie yen just came to mind because i recently watched ip man again. But since that got me thinking skills about casting i started to wonder if there was a movie made if it would be a direct adaptation of the man ga or another independent story just with the basics but once again much better than the previous attempt. Also i wonder where it would take place the us again or japan maybe some other location. And mark hammill only geta to do voice over for the intro. Side note be in a guyver live action movie have a successful voice over career that ses like a common trend. Quote

username Posted September 11, 2013 Author Posted September 11, 2013 To update this I have some sad news. I had sent a message to Steve Wang like a week ago on facebook he actually responded yesterday, which was a pleasant suprise. But he basically said he and hayter were at a mutual friends bday party and they did talk but he said it was not really serious. He also said he didn't have the rights and didn't know who did. Also.that he thought david had the best chance to get anything off the ground. So not what I wanted to.hear but damn was I surprised when he responded. You do not see that alot most people wouldn't take time out.pf their day to deal with fans. Especially when it is about a 20 yr old movie. So atleast fr this i found out steve wang is a stand up guy, and just a generally nice person. 2 Quote
Larz Zahn Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 Things like this make me really happy. About the people not the news. I'm thrilled to hear that someone who was accosted with Guyver in some way is nice enough to answer a little question and wasn't a complete jerk about it. I guess in a round about way it makes me feel vindicated in my interest in Guyver. Quote
*V Guyver Posted September 14, 2013 Posted September 14, 2013 History of the Guyver movies. LIcense was paid for and acquired by Brian Yuzna of new line Cinema. Special effects guy Joji Tani (Screaming Mad George) was brought in to direct along with Steve Wang. Both would work on the special effects. Brian Yuzna movies were camp and wanted this one kid friendly, Wang wanted a serious adult version like Kamen Rider movies. Wang lost out to the the producer and lost control to the co-director Tani. The movie bombed due to this and a decent budget squandered (12 million if I recall). Apparently most of the cast and crew had fun making this terrible trepidation since Wang remembers them all fondly. Terrible acting despite half the cast being more than capable.Steve later goes at it solo as both Director and Producer, using a meager budget of $900,000.00 and managed to create a much better received version. More coherent, better action, and a return to the series roots. David Hayter was brought in to star. Acting was more or less better but only because of the tone.2001 Wang attempted to create a third movie. The rights were lost and he switched to other productions (Don't count him in that awful Power Rangers Movie) until he made his own original works which eventually made him more famous. David Hayter later hit him up for making a third movie only to learn of the situation that Wang was in. So what did we learn? Let Wang Direct and do the action sequences, but bring in an acting coach. Give it a decent budget. You are guaranteed large returns if you willingly give this guy 5 mil at least, and 15 mil is what he deserves. Bring Back Hayter, even if not the star, he can play another character like Murikami. Since this is an alternate telling, he could pass the torch to a new Guyver lead, so you could also have a Older Hayter Guyver become mentor to a younger Guyver closer to what Sho is.Let the costumes remain, but CGI using sparingly or in small doses would lend to the realism.Great stunt team and choreography, bring those guys back, but cut the wires. Better budget means you can do more.More true to the comic.Maybe Wang can do a reboot! 1 Quote
Gray5 Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 That would all be good but please better zoanoids. Especially since the latex suit technology has come along way since Dark Hero. Quote
*Kenji Murakami Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 Every time I see the title to this topic, I can't help but think of the song "Gordan Freeman Saved my Life". Quote
