*Jess♥ Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 please identify the source of the screenshot. note: there is a trick to this. edit: somebody got it and thus the name of the thread is changed. the screen shot is a 'remaster' of one frame of episode 7 in 12 part OVA. more details below. daveblackeye152 Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 No I'm pretty sure it is OVA episode 7. Must be just after the action is over since Testuro only came out during the fight. Quote
*Jess♥ Posted November 14, 2012 Author Posted November 14, 2012 I remember the visuals being pretty bad on that episode. so it can't be that can it? Quote
Cannibal Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 My best guess so far is: "someone" took screenshot from the 7 episode like this: then made a great work on that panel of the 28 book: and finally put them together Quote
*Jess♥ Posted November 14, 2012 Author Posted November 14, 2012 nicely spotted Cannibal!!! yes, my intention was to re-animate the scenes from some episodes of the OVA. but it took me all evening to do that one frame. so I'm not sure if I will re-animate them.... unless I find a way to simplify the design while still making it faithful and look good. *Jess♥ Posted November 14, 2012 Author Posted November 14, 2012 this might work. I've been working on a basic line rendition to see if i could get the dimensions right. take a look and see what you think. Quote

*Jess♥ Posted November 15, 2012 Author Posted November 15, 2012 Was the Guyver's head always looked that egg shaped in the OAV? episode 7 was notoriously bad for this. there are about 3 or 4 shots with horrendous animation. I mean, really distorted images of the guyver, I can't imagine how the director passed those keyframes. they must have been right up against the deadline or something. there is another shot in episode 10 that I really want to re-do. actually, it's been on my mind for almost 20 years. it's the reason I originally went to college in 1999 to learn animation, though I never gained enough skill in the craft until after university. it's always been on the backburner because after getting my degree, I became aware of how much work goes into it. truth be told, guyver is pretty intimidating to animate. *Kenji Murakami Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Yeah; looking back on the old OAVs, they really didn't have very good animation. Heck, just hunting for screencaps was a chore. Nice work on the cleanup, Ryuki. Quote
Bio-Boosted Dude Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Eurgh, I forgot how awful episode 7 looked. I know there were some pretty bad mistakes on colouring bits of the guyver armour too. I would love to see anything you come up with in regards to this Ryuki! That little line test looks miles better than what I now remember the turning head looked like. When I first looked at the screenshot, I thought you grabbed a still from the OVA and just applied a filter on it to smoothen the lines. Like those cheap "HD" ones you see. I assume you were trying to keep the quality of the lines similar to in an actual screenshot but I think you may have overshot it a little.. Quote
*Jess♥ Posted November 15, 2012 Author Posted November 15, 2012 yeah, you're right, I was just thinking of matching my work to an original screenshot but applying a sharpen filter and a corrosive effect. I am looking at the way the photography was done on the original cel's and i think it would be pretty difficult to match the imperfections in it. I'm definitely seeing an over-sharp effect on the lines, but there is also an odd blur effect going on there. I think the jpeg artefacts are also causing some interference there. perhaps if I also add a blur filter on it it would look better. Quote
Guyver0 Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 Yeah episode 7 was notorious for really bad frames of the Guyver. Heck in the 8th episode with Sho going up against the Lost Numbers there were some unusual animations that weren't "bad", but didn't look "right" either. The only bad frame I recall from the new 26 episode series was in ironically their episode 7 as well. It was right after the fight between Sho and Panadyne and Sho was looking at the burning horizon and Tetsuro just catches up with him. The drawing on the Guyver 1 was just really off. Quote
*Jess♥ Posted November 19, 2012 Author Posted November 19, 2012 Tough work, but I have a nice thing going on here. hope you like what you see. Quote

lost unit Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 great work Ryuki is this gonna a longtime project? its looking really awesome you have alot of tallent you coulg even go the extra mile and do a mini web episode. Keep up the good work. Quote
Cannibal Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 Ryuki wow, this already looks fantastic. Keep going! Quote
*Jess♥ Posted November 19, 2012 Author Posted November 19, 2012 Thanks guys I appreciate it. Lost Unit, ha ha I might consider doing a web episode if i had a team to work with! Animating takes FOREVER. well if it were dialogue scenes of human characters, it would be relatively easy. but guyver is insanely difficult to animate because of the irregular shapes. edit: maybe if I can do something with a 3d wireframe... might make it easier to draw guyver and I could potentially animate a lot of things. but i haven't used 3d in literally years. not sure if I want to get into it. well there is a possibility, if there can be voice actors and a sound editor, a soundtrack can be made and that could then be animated. it's possible. I don't know how likely though. Quote
Bio-Boosted Dude Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 All i have to say is a repeat of the others, that is seriously awesome work Ryuki. 1 Quote
daveblackeye152 Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 Very neat project but as awful as seven way I think episode 10 was the worst. Which is funny since the animation and style improved a whole lot for the final two episodes. Quote
*Jess♥ Posted November 19, 2012 Author Posted November 19, 2012 Very neat project but as awful as seven way I think episode 10 was the worst. Which is funny since the animation and style improved a whole lot for the final two episodes. that's a good point. production values for that episode were really poor as well. my initial motivation for learning animation was to fix the part where shou walks out of the burning car. that scene had zero impact when it could have had a lot. but now i realise fixing that shot would be useless when taken in the context of the entire episode. *Jess♥ Posted November 23, 2012 Author Posted November 23, 2012 it's properly coloured and finished and I edited into a sequence to get a sense of pacing. I'm not at all happy with how it works. it doesn't seem to fit in. ep08-redo01.avi Quote
lost unit Posted November 23, 2012 Posted November 23, 2012 looks brilliant Ryuki your hard work paid off makes the scene look high definition keep up the good work you got alot of patience and talent. Quote
*Jess♥ Posted November 24, 2012 Author Posted November 24, 2012 thanks lost unit unfortunately, I'm not getting a suitable work/reward ratio from this work. there's nothing anyone can do about it, it's the nature of animation work. I need to focus on doing work that has a better ratio. I don't want to do any more re-animations of this. at least not on my own. if there are any other animators out there who want to work together on something liket his, then I'm all ears Quote
Bio-Boosted Dude Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 Hmm just watched it and i think I can see what you mean Ryuki. I'll have another watch later and give my thoughts properly 1 Quote
