concerned about site activity

I saw something that worried me a little.

a member had replied to an old topic with useful and relevant information and even a picture that had effectively been requested, yet was chastised for it.

I understand that necroposting can be frowned upon in many places, but this forum is not generally active so it concerns me that taking this stance is something that this forum really does not benefit from. if anything, we want to encourage more posting, right?

I'm actually very guilty of necroposting.  If the information posted is relevant and would spark new discussion, I don't think it's a bad thing.  There's a balance between reviving an old topic or creating a new duplicate one.  So it's up to the administrator to determine how rigid they should enforce the policies.  For one thing, I don't think I've ever seen any forum policies posted in these parts, which I also don't think is necessary at the moment as we've been conducting discussions and observing the common courtesy.

Replying in a post that was over 10 years old, to a user that has not even visited the site since 2014. Even if they were answering a question, it was basically pointless by this point, and almost practically spam.

It'd be different if it was to a member who was still active within the past year or such.

If they wanted to show off the images, or talk about it, it would have been a lot better to create a new post, which might have gotten more interaction/engagement or increase discussion about the topic, instead of tracking down a comment that is a reply to a main post from 2012.
