What is the Advocacy's opinion on some of the new consoles not being backwards compatible with previous generations? Would you be willing to pay for a game that you had already purchased digitally all over again? Do you think the whole situation is a crock of sh*t?

that's where consoles suck and why I don't plan on joining this generation of consoles.

There are plenty of games that come out on PS4 that would run just fine on PS3. they are literally that simple that they could run very easily on it, and yet no person who already owns a sony console can play that game unless they upgrade. maybe people don't mind about the graphics quality? maybe people would be happy to play games in PS3 quality and not have extra FPS etc. there is literally NO REASON to have different consoles unless there is a drastic difference in capabilities. With the difference between SNES and N64 there was a definite advantage to the new machine. the old one COULD NOT have done the things that the newer one did. there was a damn good reason to upgrade. new things were possible and the whole experience was vastly improved. but the difference between PS3 and PS4 is negligible. The whole issue of separate platforms is just stupid now.

Let's look at smart phones. any game that comes out on the market place will run on my phone. even though there is now an S5, the games all run on my S3. all the old ones will run and the new ones will run on any device. maybe the older devices will struggle with newer games but that's not really my point. in that case, there is a definite reason to upgrade. PC is kinda the same but it is of course WAY more modular.

So ....

In short I agree with your point. Although I approached it from a different angle, the theory is still the same. games should work on each version of a platform in this day and age because there is not reason to lock them out. If you own a game, you should be able to play it within reason on what ever system you have.  old games should work on the new system, and if the programming is not functional, they can release a patch. but the patch is to attract new customers of the game, not a standalone software to be sold.

I would sooner emulate a game I already own on PC rather than pay for a digital copy. If I already own the game then I have a legal right to own a backup copy.

I think companies like Microsoft and Sony still live in the stone age where they believe they can still fleece their consumers. People have caught on to their practices and are more than ready to give them the bird. We should not be forced into buying things that would serve no purpose to us. Other than Halo 5 and Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain I have no interest in the new consoles. I am perfectly content with my current generation of consoles. I would even be more content if I had a Super Nintindo and or a Nintindo 64!

Honestly I would be content with having older consoles. I really miss some of my PS1, PS2, N64, and Gamecube games. What really irked me about the last generation of consoles was that they had a bunch of crap games that could be emulated, but not a lot of the good ones (what I consider good). For instance I wanted to play Bloody Roar: Extreme on my 360, but the game was not one of the ones that was backwards compatible. It's a crime I tell ya!

Hell, I'm stuck on using a PS2!  I wish I had a 3 or 4 just to play some of the newer motorsport and WWII games, namely Gran Turismo 6.  But by the time I get a PS4 and GT6, GT7 might be out (slated for release later this year or next year).

Nowadays, any technology stuff just gets made obsolescent so fast.  It wasn't so long ago that xenon headlights in cars were the rage, then it was LEDs, and now Laserlights.  The latter are being used on the Audi R18 Le Mans race car, BMW have them slated for the i8 when it comes out later this year, the Audi Sport Quattro concept had them, and the Audi R8 LMX is the first production car to make it to sale with Laserlights.

These things are almost as bad as having the latest smart phone, and I don't even have a friggin' cell phone yet.

I am disappointed that PS4 is not backwards compatible. It just seems to me that I'd have to keep my PS3 just to play the older games that I do have, and I should have kept my PS2 once upon a time ago, but at the time the model of PS3 that I did have was an 80 gig that crashed and that model has long been since discontinued. I'm sure PSone games are still supported on PS4 like they have been on every Sony Console. Which makes no sence to me. Some, and not alot of PS2 games have been converted into PS3 or HD versions on PSN to be played on PS3 as an exclusive. The lack of support of PS3 or PS2 has not made me want a PS4 right now. There are not a lot of choices on RPG's to motivate me into getting a PS4. No mods or hacks are available for the system yet like they are for PS3 as far as save file editing is concerned.

Right now I don't even think its wise to buy a new system, not even this year. There will be recalls, there are going to be some technical issues as well as system crashes. I'm not ready to upgrade to it right now because the model that sony has out right now just seems to be their latest prototype model, or test model for the customers/masses as I put it. I'm not speaking negatively against Sony. I get it. Sometimes you have to run before you can walk. I get it why they don't want PS4 to be backwards compatible. Because we already have a PS3. But what they should have done is allowed at least PS2 as an option and that is where I am disappointed. PS2 is so out dated and obsolete. PS3 at the moment isn't, but will be considered obsolete after everyone has upgraded in the next 3-4 years or sooner.

I agree that there is not much point upgrading to a new console.

I don't even own a console any more.

I am borrowing my friends 360 in order to play tales of vesperia, but I have not turned it on in months. these days, it makes more sense to get indie games on PC. you can get some awesome games for a very low price on the humble bundle website and in steam sales.

I haven't played games consistently since 2007. In fact I don't even consider myself a gamer anymore. When I moved into the middle of no where there was literally no gaming stores to buy anywhere, it was almost a three hour drive to the nearest one. So I missed out on practically every major game that came out, except for the ones I pre-ordered way in advance, which was maybe two or three games. When my 360 was stolen, I went and bought a new one but never used it. I had no games for it and therefore no use for it. So I eventually gave it away. I haven't played games in nearly a decade and have turned more to my writing, reading and study of history. It makes me sad that I literally have no interest in playing games anymore, kind of like it was drained out of me while stuck in that place. Sucks right? One of the main reasons why I don't play games anymore though is because I refuse to upgrade to new consoles, it's pointless. I mean, the 360 was still a good system (as far as I remember) there's no need for the new upgrade. They upgrade so fast and it costs you an arm and a leg to get one. I just refuse to get them. Now I might get the game console after this generation or the generation after that. But personally I see it as nothing more than a scam to get your money. It really irks me that they make these things so fast, charge you a ridiculous amount of money, than the games themselves are super expensive. It won't surprise me in the least when they start charging games $100.00.

Aha, Backward compatibility is something that we need especially if hey would want to keep the source code of the consoles closed.  I'd be willing to accept the console without backwards compatibility if they would release an emulator capable of running the old games.  Let's say 10 years later, your favorite game for the PS3 is still working, but your PS3 is not, how the hell am I supposed to play that game again?

I'm thinking that they forced the PS2 to be backwards compatible simply because there was an emulator released.  I didn't know that the newer Playstations could still play PSone games.  If that is the case, then it would strongly support my theory.

Similarly, my last console is the PS2, which is currently collecting dust inside the cabinet.  I don't really miss playing consoles with the lot of current games.  I only regret not getting the newer consoles because of the Japanese games.  That's probably the only reason why I got a console in the first place.  Never really played any American games.  Most of my games are Japanese RPG or Super Robot Wars game.  Come to think of it, I've never played any games that were made from the US.  It was always Japanese in origin even from my time with the PSone.

I agree with your comment. We do need backwards compatibility. My brother's PS3 is an 80 gig model like my old one that crashed. It can play any PS2 game. However he did say it over heats. I just wish that they allowed the PS4 to play PS2 at least. It just doesn't seem fair. However the only PS2 games I have are downloads off of PSN that only work for PS3. If I were to try to put the PS2 disc version of FFX....it would say unsupported disc or something to that effect.

However, rumor has it that Sony is going to produce another of model of PS4 that is backwards compatible. However that rumor isn't reliable because Sony hasn't announced no such claim. I do remember that a Sony executive said if Playstation gamers wanted to play their old games. Than they needed to keep their old consoles to do so. It wasn't the kind of comment people wanted to hear, which also explained why Sony was still  selling PS2 units for a while. Perhaps instead of PS2 backwards compatibility for a PS3 model, they were selling the consoles to the people still wanting to play PS2 format games because they knew it was still on demand.

Well, with how PC's work and such, that's the reason why Running with Scissors is releasing a new Postal 2 expansion this fall.  And it helps to remember that Postal 2 is over a decade old as far as a PC game goes.  With the fail that Postal 3 was in a lot of the Postal fans' eyes and the fact that Postal 2 hasn't had a major update (aside from Postal 2 Complete, now just simply known as Steam Postal 2 or Postal 2, which has the standard Postal 2, the Share the Pain multi-player expansion, the Apocalypse Weekend expansion, and allows you to play a simple version of the A Week in Paradise mod) in years, there's a new expansion.

It takes place in the town of Paradise after Postal Dude destroyed the town, but otherwise, it'll be similar to a post-apocalyptic version of Postal 2, complete with daily errands.

That's what's good about PC games, vs console games, which though they have DLC, when a new game or expansion comes out, you to sometimes have to worry about backwards compatibility.

The best thing about PC that I've enjoyed is that there is normally a modding community who produces cheat codes that you type into the registry of the game. Steam has a huge modding community for Skyrim. You can just about any mod. They have mods from villages outside of Skyrim to traveling to other countries. I know they've only produced a few mods just for PS3. But not near a enough, the only mods for Skyrim through PS3 are max money and you don't have to pay for the Breezehome. If you use at the beginning of a new game. I'm hoping they will make more like max skill level and perks. Even though all the player has to do is delete the updates and dlc's and use the game's glitches to get the first 81 levels.

When I played Skyrim on my laptop. I was level 2,000 and my stats were over the roof due to mods. I had every skill, and I could travel to these coded villages just outside of Skyrim. It was pretty amazing. On my PS3 though, I'm just level 153 and most of the skills.I know the modding community, the program I use to edit and mod my PS3 files is talking about mods for PS4. So far, they haven't had time to experiment yet. Maybe in a year we'll see some results. I honestly think modding makes the game way more interesting. Some people love mods and some people don't see the point. I love mods and cheats.

I enjoy pc games because you can mod and you don't have to worry about backward's compatibility. It was cool that I could play Morrowind or Oblivion and those are pretty old games. It has been a while since I have played Skyrim though.
