Guest snow Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Can you believe the USA is wanting to colonize Mars in 25-30 years? And they say their going to start sending people in 2025? 200,000 people wan' t to leave their families behind and sit for 2 years in a Mission Lander, Nasa's new space shuttle just to go to a permanent vanguard Mars colony. I have one word for that. Stupid. Its suicide. You can't do jack sh*t on Mars. What do they plan to do when they go to their little Mars Station that sits on red rocks? What then? Go outside? What if something terrible happens like some sort of devastating storm that destroys the colony's life support systems? Wait, we see the president on CNN or NBC issuing some sort of apology for the suicides of 200,000 victims of steel stupidity? Its the silliest idea I ever heard. Sit in some dome all day, some kind of Glass air tight bubble with fake grass and trees? My message to those people. Good luck with that. Quote
*Jess♥ Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 I can see tons of awesome reasons why it's good to go there and those people are LUCKY, but I'm not telling you. let's see if you can guess my reasons? 1 Quote
Guest snow Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 (edited) Okay, Here goes. Guessing what Yuna might be thinking. 1.) Making new friends 2.) The days on Mars are 40 minutes longer than Earth days. 3.) With advanced technology, Mars can become like earth. That's all I can guess, Yuna. Edited March 8, 2014 by Jupiter-Prime Quote
*Jess♥ Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 yes on all counts. more reasons. progress. humanity colonising a new world and making real progress for the species. to be part of something awesome. To get a different perspective on our place in the universe. to be separate from the socio-political system of earth. to be part of making a new society with new ways of doing things. to have your own land. to be able to build your home in whatever configuration you like without the same planning rules. to face unique and interesting challenges. to be in the history books. to be on the cutting edge of scientific study and breakthroughs due to a unique environment. These are just off the top of my head. Quote
Guest snow Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 That makes a lot of sense . But...I would never wan't to go to Mars. Quote
*YoungGuyver Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Though to disagree with you one one front Yuki- The habitats that people will be living in are prefab, and designed for survival. Economically, there is not a lot of room for variation at this time. Not with what we'll be shipping over. And has the U.S. government taken over the MarsOne program? Last I heard, MarsOne was an international private organization that was originally started by a few Dutch people. Quote
Guest snow Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 I'm pretty sure it is International. I just hear a lot about it from documentaries on The Discover Channel and how Mars is going to be the new Earth and so on and so forth. I just hear that scientifically Mars is unlivable. Too much radiation and little atmosphere and its really hot and I don't want to live in some synthetic environment on a ball made of red rock. Quote

I was thinking about in the long term when they are settled and people start to be able to spread out with their own projects. Jupiter, Mars is really cold. Quote
Shin Mefilas Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 (edited) Move to mars? hmmm I'd give it a shot. But knowing my luck it will never happen in my lifetime, shame really Edited March 9, 2014 by Azagro Scar-Forge Quote
*Jess♥ Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 who knows what our life expectancy actually is? There are currently people alive over 100, but think about what medicine was like when they were our age. I mean for me, that would be 66 years ago. looking at the advances that medical science has made since 1948, I feel quite optimistic. 1 Quote
Shin Mefilas Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 Thats very true Yuki and I very much hope that I'll get to atleast go to the moon one day. Hell I'd be happy just to go into space once. I know you mean about changes, I'm only 24 and the worlds nothing like how it was when I was little. Quote
*V Guyver Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 I suspect that Mars is still very viable. The cold can be taken care of if you go underground. Gradual terraforming can be done over centuries. Mars is an easy new resource hub, and it's actually the second best place in the solar system to launch more exploration projects from after our own Moon. The real problems is the initial colonization... the cost of humanity, danger, and limited money and supplies for the project. The second hazard after that, is how to Govern such a planet, and the possible international problems that might arise on two planets. Quote
*Jess♥ Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 That would be a question of dependency. As long as a colony were dependent on resources from earth they would have to give their allegiance to those who can provide said resources. Quote
Guest snow Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 lol, Yuki starting to sound like Total Recall. Quote
*V Guyver Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 That would be a question of dependency. As long as a colony were dependent on resources from earth they would have to give their allegiance to those who can provide said resources. Up to a point at least, once a colony is self sufficient they may not need as many supplies, though I suspect they'll need mass produced goods and certain foods they can't gain on mars. So yes, you could say they might switch to whatever power supplies them best, but then again. If Governments here argue and fight over mars and then lay claim to it after victory, there might be those issues. We still have trouble with Antarctica, and recently there have been region disputes over it again as more land becomes viable. Think back to the war the UK had with Argentina. Also, if the colonial population feels exploited, neglected, or is legitimately abused, things can go sour. Should they ever try to break away from any government on earth. Quote
Guest Winters Eve Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I've always wanted to go to Mars. I wonder what it would be like. Quote
LordSpleach Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 lol, Yuki starting to sound like Total Recall. I was think more like Zone of the Enders. Plus, long term wise, we need to colonize Mars. Yes, it will be difficult. Yes, it will be expensive. But if we don't do something now, what will happen if we can't stop or significantly reduce the pollution? Quote
*V Guyver Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Hmm, I imagine mars year round being cool or cold. You can probably have the time of your life if you study astrology, the sky should be an incredible sight. Though the sky there may not as welcoming as earth's sky. You should be able to work a lot better in terms of physical labor, less gravity and all. But you'd feel a bit weird too trying to walk about because you aren't used to the weaker gravity. You can see way far into the distance, all the mountains look incredible. The one place I really want to see on mars is Olympus Mons. Quote
LordSpleach Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Though the problem with lower gravity is that eventually your body gets use to it, and you'll be weaker for it. Quote
*V Guyver Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 Yeah, you'd have to exercise more, and increase you're intake. But it's far less trouble to maintain your health than actual zero gravity. Quote
*YoungGuyver Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Or you could just do the evolution. Mars is a completely new world, and with such a vast distance, interbreeding with Earth would be difficult. It stands to reason that natural genetic drift would take hold, and we would eventually see a new breed of human. Hopefully a few of the mutations would be beneficial, though our medicine would keep those less adapted alive. Unlike the past, our social structure and medicine keeps the 'weak' alive and breeding. this poses a few questions for us... should we use genetic engineering to pass on the genes of the successful to the children of the weak? That is one POSSIBLE solution, but what else can we come up with? Quote
*V Guyver Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Genetic manipulation? Possible. As for evolution, still might not happen thanks to the same reasons we haven't been evolving on earth over the last centuries. On the other hand, evolution or even forced self made genetic manipulation can be a sort of venue for evolution through. Quote
