Guest snow Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 I was wondering what it would be like to be a god. I wonder what it would be like to be one. To make a religion for yourself and have people pray to you and to have total control whether their soul belongs in your paradise or in an eternal purgatory of pain and suffering. To either grant people good health or just kill them with a tornado or a huge tsunami just with the turn of a hand or to move a mountain like God from the old testament,or strike an enemy of your followers with a huge thunder bolt like Thor from the Pros Edda or Zeus from the Illiad would. To me, a god is an immortal supreme being with dominance of mortals. They can create life and than they can destroy it. Gods have supposedly been around since the beginning of time, or so its believed by those that worshipped them. They may have created man in their image. But man is only an image, nothing more. Men and women aren't immortal spectral beings and it shows in mythology. In mythology, man and woman have been nothing but for the amusements and for the convenience of the Gods in almost every religion. If they displeased a God; they were either cursed or put to death. So what is everyone's thoughts and veiws on this? Quote
*Jess♥ Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 What you describe is not a god, it is a tyrant. they exist in our world. There is one in syria, there was one in Ukraine. there was one in germany 70 years ago. There is one in North Korea. To be a god, we each know what that is like, because each of us is a manifestation of god. We each have infinite power and the only thing that prevents us from using it is faith. we all believe we are powerless and so it is that we are powerless. Belief is a tricky thing. we often fancy that we believe something, but we don't actually believe it. we just fancy to. true belief is very difficult given the story we each tell ourselves. To embrace teh infinite power and knowledge of the entire universe, any one of us, would cease to be an individual, we would become the universe itself and understand what is in every person's heart. how can we condemn what we truly understand? I do not condemn criminals. I understand that they are human beings. I do not fear them or hate them. I love them. even though they have done harm to other people, I must love them if I can love myself. because everyone is imperfect and love by it's very nature is unconditional. Quote
*Jess♥ Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 by teh way, I don't think crime should go unpunished. I just believe that punishment ought to be carried out with love, not with hate. Quote
*V Guyver Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Hmm, a God. I'd probably be like what most humans would act if the become one. They'd try various things to amuse themselves, then try various things to create or destroy, then try to build perfection, get bored, and eventually move on and leave humanity the way it has always been. Frankly, becoming a god is not really all it's cracked up to be I imagine. But is certain is that as a god, most people would use it childishly, and I have to admit. If were a god, I'd likely be a big ol' prankster who'd lazily do good deeds. Quote

*V Guyver Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 Well, it depends though, how much of a job you take god hood seriously. If you aren't a person to take it seriously, or don't care how much time passes. You might enjoy it, they have minor god's like the Celtic, Norse, Druid, and Lusitatian gods. They all shared at least one very lazy alcohol loving god. Really, all you had to pray for was a good drink, good friends, and good times. Quote

I would love to be a god that parties all of the time and live it up like the gods of debauchery, that being gods like Dionysus, Bacchus, or the Skyrim Daedric Lord Sanguine. I wouldn't just party. I'd promote war and battle. I'd also support love. However if I were a God among other Gods, I'd punish certain nations that I felt deserved it. But I do believe that if someone had the power of a God. I would sit and debate with the other Gods as well. However being a God that lives forever would get old. Its a wonder why they create things to keep them entertained. Most Gods like Loki and Ares seem to abuse their supreme power. Quote
*V Guyver Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 Well Loki was originally a god of fun mischief and partying, then they made him a villain during the viking age when warrior glory took over the mindset and culture. So it didn't start off as abuse. Funny huh? Now, a God is likely to be bored, but depends on the god. A long living god like Zeus got bored by his wife and was a cheater, but for the most did his duty. Ares was an efficient god of war, and when he loved he was ridiculed and humiliated. So A god is pretty much forced into his role, he can't escape it unless humanity sees him in a new light, or loses his power over the imagination of people and is forgotten or merged with another god. If you are an unseen god, a god with no name, a god unknown to man. How would you work in this world. Chances are, whatever changes you make, you'd want credit for it, respect, because we as individuals have an amount of ego. Quote

If they were to come to man and try to give them hope. Man would reject them; either because of devout faith in Christianity, hinduism, or paganism. They'd see this new deity as a demonic construct, or reject it all together. But I completely agree about how humanity can force a god into a role of some kind. Quote

Lot's of people will find excuses or reasons to deny a deity, for whatever reason. Many people already do. People want proof these days by visualization. Believing ins't seeing anymore which was the whole concept of faith. I agree that any deity coming to man claiming to be a god or goddess of some sort would most definitely be rejected though by many people, some claiming it to be a demon others may try to find a more scientific interpretation of it i.e. "an alien life form from another planet or galaxy" or something like that. Some would probably go to such an extreme just to deny the spirituality of the subject. People don't like the idea of an afterlife because they don't like the idea of being held accountable to some kind of higher being or power. I think it would take something drastic like a tyrant, as Yuki said to get the desires you speak of, worship and all. Edited June 1, 2014 by Mirabilis Quote

Oh but for those who would act as such, there are a great number who would fall for it. Think about how you can come to earth and claim to be a god, just show the miracles. Even if you don't show any miracles, with enough work you can convince someone you are. Like so many cults before... hell look up Hong Xiuquan, the man who claimed he was the son of god, younger brother to Jesus. God, the consequences. The christians viewed Muhammad traditionally as some fake who fooled people into betraying the true message of God. If you can fool a population with no powers, imagine what the real thing could do. Even if you were rejected, why not impersonate a god? If you don't want to pretend to be the Almighty God, or Anubis, you can pretend to be a Demi-God, or a prophet, hell you can come in super powered and call yourself the second coming of Jesus and claim to bring salvation. Or in the case of Islam, you can be Jesus AND wage war against pigs according to their passage... If you did that as a god, may I suggest the murdered pigs be canned spam instead? Quote
Guest Jupiter Posted June 2, 2014 Posted June 2, 2014 So, what if this deity came to you in human form, and than revealed his/her true form to you and showed/ teleported you to its spectral realm and showed you what you could have if you worshipped it and helped spread his/her religion.Say you have a dying relative suffering from cancer or some other terminal disease in your family, you're poor and suffering from debt, You have too many enemies, have poor working skills in society. This deity comes to you; Heals your dying relative; grants them unnatural long life, gives you millions of dollars and makes your debts vanish, obliterates your enemies; erases them from history as if they never existed, and grants you unimaginable knowledge. Knowledge so great that things like college would be easy. Would you still deny the deity after all he/she has done for you? Quote
Mirabilis Posted June 2, 2014 Posted June 2, 2014 (edited) Problem is you're comparing ancient historical peoples to modern day, it's not so simple. Of course you could always convince people by brainwashing them, as for the majority though, people want to see something...beyond what a human can do. The word many scientist hate Miracles. If they could provide something...anything beyond just their own words then sure people would follow them, but if someone just stood up and screamed "Worship me I'm a God!" he'd be laughed at, at best, worst case scenario be carted off for disturbing the peace or to an asylum. Skepticism kills ideas and if you gain no mass following you won't be going anywhere. As far as mohammed being denied his prophethood by the Jews and Christians...well that's a whole different can of worms. Let's just say the Arab tribes didn't accept mohammed as a prophet...willingly. And according to the haddiths of Islam Isa (Islamic prophet/version of Jesus) is said to return with the Mahdi of Islam to wage war on the world and convert everyone to Islam or behead them. Sure, someone could impersonate themselves to be a deity, but do you really think with today's day and age they would get any true mass following? I remember some guy between 06-08 claiming to be Jesus returned in Florida and that people needed to follow him and worship him...he had his 5 mins of fame but nobody remembers him today. My point was, yeah anyone could try to pass them self off as a God/Goddess but it won't be just the *bigot christians* who would be out there protesting against them. As stated above, many people would most definitely reject them unless given some sort of proof of their deity. Edited June 2, 2014 by Mirabilis Quote
*V Guyver Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 Oh there are people who would fall for it.Three years ago we had a preacher claimed rapture was coming in New York, several People sold all their possessions, or used up their children's college funds, or donated everything they had. The result was obviously terrible as this ruined the lives of several people, several families. The BIGGEST kick about this? THIS IS THE THIRD TIME HE'S ANNOUNCED THIS CLAIM. *face palms* Yes, three times in a row he convinced them this would happen, and he's likely to do it again. I wish I had the articles over the criticism over it. You can have an idea about it by looking up guy's like Harold Camping. So what did we learn from the above example? That there will always be gullible people, always someone to con, always someone put their faith in you. I would prefer if humanity had moved past this, but the need to believe someone, anyone is very strong for those who are desperate. It's scary if someone randomly was given godly powers, he can abuse them so easily. =(You know, I think I want to become a videogame god. I demand gamers around the world play an MMO and dispense their hard earned videogame currencies to my digitial god avatar. XDEdit: Bonus, must see! http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-26815298 Quote
