Ranks

Featured Replies

Too bad we can't have little sprites next to our ranks that give a little pictural representation of what our ranks mean

  • Author

we can.

I would just need to find suitable pictures.

and it would take up space.

if you can find suitable images that are really really small, I would be happy to put them on there.

white tiger would be 'shiroi tora'.

but there may be another phrase for it if there is a specific legend about it....

or naming conventions.........

oh! actually if you read white tiger using onyomi readings it can come out as byakuko

so there's something interesting.

i guess the word processor ain't perfect!

So there's no more rank after 1000 posts? How about Phoenix? And while we're mentioning Phoenix, why not mention the four heavenly kings, like Suzaku (Phoneix), Seiryuu (Dragon), Byakko (Tiger), and Genbu (Turtle). And even the Pegasus. But then if we are comparing the heirarchy of the food chain, like fragment eaten by grapes? eaten by Banana? eaten by Fly? eaten by Spider eaten by bird eaten by cat eaten by dog eaten by tiger. After this, shouldn't it be the elephant that eats the tiger? Or how about the mouse? In some cases, the mouse get eaten by the cat, who gets eaten by the dog, then gets eaten by the elephant, who in turn gets eaten by the mouse.

Sorry, I need to let that out, but my point is the rank after 1000.

we weren't expecting to get that many posts back then when i made the ranks.

I'll take a look at the top posters and see how many posts people seem to be getting these days.

i noticed you named the tiger god as byakko.

that's interesting. would you be able to tell me more about that name? did i get my translation wrong?

I'm still learning. :)

I have a Japanese-English / English-Japanese dictionary at hand now so I can look for translations the old fashioned way. And I must say it usually works out. Let's see, Tiger.........................

Tiger: Tora (so that translation is correct).

White: Shiroi (lacking colour), Aojiroi (pale), Hakujin (race), Shiro[iro] (colour).

Byakko: White (spiritual) fox

Phoenix: Fushicou

I can do this all day.

Here's a site I used along side my hand-held dictionary. http://www.freedict.com/onldict/Japanese.html

The four names, Suzaku, Seiryuu, Byakko ang Genbu are actually the four heavenly kings of ancient chinese constellations. As these names can be found on most Anime that uses ancient mythology. Some examples are, like what BK mentioned, Yuuyuu Hakusho, and most notably, Fushigi Yuugi.

Suzaku (朱雀) is represented by the Vermillion Sparrow and is symbolized as the protector of the south.

Seiryuu (青竜) is represented by a blue dragon and is symbolized as the protector of the east

Byakko (白虎) is represented by a white tiger and is symbolized as the protector of the west

Genbu (玄武) is represented by a Black turtle and is symbolized as the protector of the north.

Also, with regards to Byakko, Byakko is a proper noun, but if you were going to refer to it as a common noun with adjective, then Shiroi Tora would suffice. The readings of the Kanji would depend on the usage, as you usually pronouce the kanji in Onyomi when used in formal names. This is however on a case to case basis. This is why there is Furigana written sometimes in kanji, to determine how the writter wishes it to be pronounced, but the meaning is still basically the same.

Just curious, what would the size requirement of the pictures? Like image size and file size. I seem to have some fitting image that I think might look good.

Here's an example:

tigerorcat.jpg

Would you consider this a cat or a tiger?

  • Author

the suitable image would be the size of the vip badge more or less.

that's an interesting pic.

a shame it too big.

I'm thinking we could change the ranks.

at the moment, since most members are allowed custom ranks with no real restriction, the ranks are almost meaningless.

I have set member-double-plus at 100 posts. I am thinking the rank system should go up to 100 posts and then allow only member++ to have custom ranks.

so perhaps something like the following :-

000 - 綿埃 Dustball

002 - 星ã®æ¬ ç‰‡ Star Crumb

005 - å°ã•ãªè‘¡è„ Tiny Grape

010 - 毒蜘蛛 Poison Spider

020 - ç«é³¥ Fire Bird

030 - 黒猫 Black Cat

040 - 餓狼 Hungry Wolf

050 - 水虎 Water Tiger

060 - 白熊 Polar Bear

070 - 巨象 Giant Elephant

080 - æç«œ Dinosaur

090 - 鳳凰 Phoenix

100 - 飛竜 Flying Dragon

OR...

should i increase member-double-plus to 200 posts?

that would look like:-

000 - 綿埃 Dustball

002 - 星ã®æ¬ ç‰‡ Star Crumb

005 - å°ã•ãªè‘¡è„ Tiny Grape

010 - 毒蜘蛛 Poison Spider

020 - ç«é³¥ Fire Bird

030 - 黒猫 Black Cat

040 - 餓狼 Hungry Wolf

060 - 水虎 Water Tiger

080 - 白熊 Polar Bear

100 - 巨象 Giant Elephant

120 - æç«œ Dinosaur

150 - 鳳凰 Phoenix

180 - 飛竜 Flying Dragon

IMO member++ at 100 posts is better than 200.

at the moment, since most members are allowed custom ranks

Sorry for silly question: where can I set my custom rank. I tried really hard, but found nothing ^^;

I have edited the ranks. I had not realised, I dropped the ball on that bit of work.

rank editing is available at 100 posts as you become a Tanuki.

Mario would be proud!

I thought the ranks went past 100,goes to show how much I know.
