so what does this mean? obviously this book wasn't written by takaya-sensei, but who was it published by?

takaya-sensei works for kadokawa and guyver is published by kadokawa isn't it.

but this was before kadokawa, was this published by tokuma shoten?

was this written by a different author working for tokuma?

Posted

The copyright is for Takaya Production and Tokuma Shouten, so they own the rights to the VDF. This was also from the editorial department of Shonen Captain.

Well, as I mentioned earlier the publisher was Matsuen Mitsuo, and since all of these information was compiled using existing materials, they only need a person in-charge of gathering all the data. The last name of the Staff indicates that the one in charge is Suzuki Toshihiro. I don't think that this has a single author. Think of this as a special feature magazine, where you have many authors contributing.

so this can be considered an official datafiles. I think many of us were under the impression that this was published by a third party and was 'good' but not 'official'.

Well i suppose it is not a huge difference.

but it does call some things into question.

like if the VDF got the Romanised name for Li Yentsui wrong, does that mean that some of the other Romanised names that we have could be equally in error? I always found the Romanisation of Guyot to be rather awkward. also, there is the romanisation of pulukshterl. which most of us agree is purgstall.

well we have not been too fussed about names really have we? only when a name is clearly wrong, like if somebody called caerleon 'carlton'... we are generally pretty lax about the whole thing. archanfel, alkanfel, alkampfer, etc. apollon, apollyon, apollo, etc.

As we all know, a few decades ago the Japanese had difficulty with spelling in english. Since the VDF was done during that time, they may have learned to correct their spelling over time. I think that in the later volumes, there are much more consistencies in their naming convention. So any new information officially released should be considered the correct spelling.

I still find the name Kablarl funny. It sounds so cartoony despite his ominous looks.

Here are some more comments about the other guyver merchandise.

vdf 070

Page 146

No. 20 Aptom 5

price including tax 3,090 yen (list price 3,000 yen)

Aptom newest version. Changing up to this point, it was created to have a strong standard pose of a heroic color. The few number of details in the vinyl cord of the electric shock tentacles was disappointing. Perhaps I should get the one used in Elegen's....

No. 21 Zoalord Guyot

price including tax 3,708 yen (list price 3,600 yen)

Currently, the biggest item on the series. It's as big as the Gigantic. Because it took us some time to craft this, we crafted the protecter when it was first shown. I also want Guyot's giant node in relics point.

No. 22 0 (zero) Guyver

price including tax 2,884 yen (list price 2,800 yen)

The first human bioboost body. This is the guy that appeared in Shou's vision while in the relic in volume 7. It also appeared as a shilhouette in the anime. But we crafted this based on the established image. It came out awesome. But I guess this is minor

No. 23 Neo ZX-tole

price including tax 3,708 yen (list price 3,600 yen)

ZX-tole's true final form. The head became smaller, the the shoulder has volume added, and the legs were extended, giving a spartan image. It is able to "Complete open mode" turning all chest beam cannon to BT mode.

No. 24 Guyver Gigantic

price including tax 4,120 yen (list price 4,000 yen)

Cool. Good job on the design, especially the deep impression from the manufaturing. The coating is perfect, it was good to have a fine millipen (around 0.05mm) draw the streak line detail in the whole body

No. 25 Gigantic Dark

price including tax 4,120 yen (list price 4,000 yen)

In order to achieve the intricate details, the head has 5 parts!! Basically with the excaption of the head and chest, it is the same sa Guyver Gigantic, but it's like this is a different guy. (although he is a different guy) At the moment this and Guyot is the only kit I'm eyeing.

Bioboost Armor Guyver Series

(Soft Vinyl made constructed kit)

In this series, there are 2 categories. One, is the dawning of the Guyver kit's 1/6 series. These, are in reference to the Bio Fighter Collection. Another, is the kit version of those that appeared in the hollywood movies. The subject of these kits were originally created by Mr. Steve Wang.

Bioboost Armor Guyver I (1/6 scale)

price including tax 2,575 yen (list price 2,500 yen)

It all starts here!! One that was sold when the anime version of Studio Live was publicly released. Even for the 1/12 series, it was because of this kit that planning started, you can say this was the source for all the kits.

Bioboost Armor Guyver III (1/6 scale)

price including tax 3,090 yen (list price 3,000 yen)

Even though this is the same scale as Guyver I it's big. Comparing it I looks like a child. Coupled with the volume up of the whole body, Guyver III's fiendies mood greatly follows this. It looks like a monster kit!!

Original Version Guyver II Head

price including tax 412 yen (list price 400 yen)

The Original (first version) of Guyver II has no difference from Guyver I except from the head. With only this attachment, the Guyver I kit can become Guyver II. Proportion? Height? ...I can't say

Movie Version Guyver [GUYVER]

price including tax 4,944 yen (list price 4,800 yen)

The kit originally from Steve Wang himself. Such reality and feeling of existence..... Anyway, you'll know it has value at one look. But was it on purpose to have this product reproduced

Guyver Zoanoid

price including tax 7,004 yen (list price 6,800 yen)

A loss leader character of the hollywood version that combines Guyver II and III's feet as well as a zoanoid. This kit actually borrowed the movie prop to be produced, amazingly real. Its surprising.

Page 147

Out of production

(currently unobtainable)

Now there are many out of production kit. Aside from the OVA version Guyver II and Guyver I Gold 1/6 soft vinyl series, ZX-tole, Guyver I, Aptom III were sold as BFC series. No matter the individuality of the kid, these are now treated as collectors items. Also, they have the sense of fashion. SD series are an example of that.

'86 OVA version Female Guyver II

List price 3,000 yen

The Guyver II version of Studio Live is female. A unique item in the Guyver World where there is no female creature. It has a detailed proportion, and I think, that it's based on one's taste.

ZX-tole The Final

list price 3,200 yen

Although there is no exception, this is the only customary glow in the dark, and is an incredible item which there is only one. Later an all open mode and additional parts were sold. (no chest beam)

Guyver I [ACTION FOR MEGA-SMASHER]

list price 2,800 yen

A kit that was bundled with the video which is a rare item. It would be nice if there was a Guyver III for this. It is trully regrettable that this is a limited edition merchandise.

Aptom 3

list price 3,000 yen

A kit using the body of Elegen, which is actually a compatible kit with Elegen. Looking closely the proportion and pose was wonderfully changed. Nevertheless they even made this?

Deformed Guyver Guys (total height 7cm) list price 680 yen

No 1 Guyver I (center) No 2 ZX-tole (left) No 3 Guyver III (right)

One of the soft vinyl kit. These, came about from the prototype design. When these were sld, it was in the middle of the SD boom. I don't see any problems with the SD character. What I wanted, was the set of the team 5. Also, Balcus and Guyot in this since would be nice. It would be good to talk about characters which were not put into SD....

Guyver I GOLD

list price 3,500 yen

This, is a 1/6 Guyver I Gold Version in commemoration for the release of the 2nd OVA series. Would it be a premier to have this now? This was only the 1/6 kit coated with gold, but aside from that it's good.

Prototype & Special Parts

Aptom 1 and Balcus that is introduced here are only introduced up to test shot and was not made into kits. This time, presenting for the first time to the public. Additionally, customized part for the 1/12 scale Guyver I will be introduced. There are 3 parts in total, chosen for subscription. Also they are currently made as presents.

Guyver Breast (Chest Armor Open State)

*Special Parts not sold

This is the special parts sent through subscriptions. The extension of the high frequency blade on the arm and pose from the feet. These are also given as present to those wo subscribed to the OVA....

Aptom 1 Guyver Version

*Prototype and not sold (unreleased)

Finally the finished product!! Really... this is the way it should be released right!? The one who wanted to manufacture this was Max Factory themselves!! I'm counting on you everyone!!

Zoalord Dr. Balcus

*Test Shot only (unreleased)

Even though the soft vinyl version of this existed.... what a waste, right. Everyone was expecting to have this produced next, the request was turned down. It's okay right, old man.

Okay, do I really have to translate the next remaining pages? I can say now that those pages are indeed ads for the telephone cards and the figures themselves. Not to mention that the quality of the images are somewhat blurred that it's quite difficult to read some of the lines. (Not to mention me being usually lazy and all).

Posted

well you certainly don't have to! :)

I do think that there are many fans who are perfectionists and collectors and even though this is not a physical copy of the book, it would give a sense of 'completion' to have it all in english.

but since it is not information that we would deem as important then a very quick and rough translation could be fine.

but that is up to you. I would prefer to have it all, I personally think the publisher information is quite important, but that's just me.

Posted

Ok then, translate it is. But like I mentioned, there are certain text that are blurred and I can't make out what it says. Particularly some of the text in the publisher information. The image is somewhat rasterized too. I'll see what my magic can do.

Hi Lost Unit, it's been a while, nice to see you!

we were right near the end, you typesetted the second page of the interview with takaya sensei.

I typesetted the third page and then durendal has recently translated the following pages with the max factory figures.

I haven't typesetted those, I was going to get around to it but if you do it then it leaves me free to do other things :)

I had this book for years, unable to read most of it but loved it for the artwork, which I've kept as a companion to my DVD & graphic novel collection.

I can now read all through your amazing scanlations.

Thank you so much for your efforts!

ah! he he , of course, I remember that now.

river chaos posted a clearer image. how could i forget XD

Clearer image yes, but the parts near the spine are unreadable / blurred.  I just feel that we need closure on this, and that final credits page is the one itch that can't be scratched.

Posted

Even if I zoomed in, it's still unreadable.  There is no way for me to translate the credits if I can see clearly what's written.  Well, since it's just the credits I guess nobody is bothered that much that that is the only portion left of the whole book left untranslated.  Well, aside from the ads that is, but I'd be crazy to translate all those as well.

.....left untranslated. Well, aside from the ads that is, but I'd be crazy to translate all those as well.

haha ha, yeah I can imagine ^_^

it's pretty cool that we can come back to this and we possibly have more resources! hey guyverfan that would be super ace! even if you found it difficult to scan, a photo would probably suffice as long as the text is legible.
