So how do you research a game before purchasing it? Do you often get buyer's remorse and think that you shouldn't have bought the game because the game play and story suck, or the game just isn't pleasing you at all?

I like to look a game and get some information so that I know what I'm buying, whether I want, and not so I waste my money on something that I will regret.

Its happened so many times when I was younger. I own up to the fact that I'm very picky with whatever game I want to play. I have even regretted buying the best games because they didn't fit in with my personal preference.

With Games, I am slightly different than movies.

With Movies, if I see one or two trailers for a movie, and I like what I see, I will usually stop caring about watching any more, as I am already planning on seeing it, and watching too many trailers could spoil some plot.

However, with games, I will watch cinematic trailers all day... But it doesn't do anything for me other than hype. I need gameplay trailers before I can really make a decent choice. So I end up watching a lot of trailers/footage of games. There has been too many times where cinematic trailers have hyped a game... only for the game to be a shitty mobile, or just plain poor game.

Games are usually always at least 3-4 times more than a movie ticket, and while some have lots ( and I mean LOTS) of hours of enjoyment... But some are so short that it feels like a waste of money. Which is one of the biggest reasons why I like purchasing physical copies of games from a store... I can bring them back and at least get SOME of my money back.

it depends .

if the game is in a bundle, I generally have a cursory view of the videos and decide whether i want to spend $1 on it or $5 to get the bonus games.

I generally won't spend a lot of money on games. if i see a video I like, I might research the game to see what style of gameplay it is and how well it has been receive. nothing strenuous.

i'll usually put them on my wishlist and keep in mind the type of price I would be willing to pay for it. then I buy  it when it is in a sale or is reduced to my price.

it's very rare that I'll buy a game at full retail price.

the few games I did, was because of how excited I was about the game after playing it at a friends or playing a demo.

latest example of that is GTA 5 online pc. others include... oddworld new and tasty, the walking dead 2, stick it to the man, unepic, fez, portal 2

I've never bought a game that I didn't like.  Never done much research either.  I'm normally the last one to buy a game, so when I have friends playing a specific game, I try it and if I like it, I buy it.  If I can wait, I'll just borrow it when they're done.

Besides, my standards are pretty much very low when it comes to games.  Normally when I see the name Final Fantasy in it, I'll buy it immediately without any research.  Heck I had 2 copies of Final Fantasy 8 and 9, one in english and one in Japanese.
