this is up on ebay at the moment...

the first manga appearance of Guyver in Shonen Captain from February 1986! ( edit:  it is actually1985 !!!!!!!!!!! )

I like the title page I cant recall seeing the guyver tex like that before...

its cool but not £93 quid cool for me!

Nice find! I didn't know until today about actual month when Guyver started.

 

Now I have a question: wiki says "In 1985, Tokukan Shoten's Monthly Shonen Captain started serialization of Guyver.". So I assume that the Shonen Captain is just like Shonen Ace? Releasing "February chapter" on December?

I have to question how the tankoubon came out in march 1986 if the first release of any guyver was a month earlier.

are you sure about the year?

I can't see a year on that cover, but it could just be because of how small the scan is.

I don't know I just relayed what was on the ebay page without thinking about it...

 

unless 86 should be 85 on ebay and wikepedia,  as in our wiki it says

''In 1985, Tokukan Shoten's Monthly Shonen Captain started serialization of Guyver1985 ...''

on wikepedia it says

''The manga was originally serialized in Tokuma Shoten's Monthly ShÅnen Captain, the first appearance being in the February 18 magazine beginning in 1986''...

I have no idea on the exact date when the first tankobon was published, if the serialisation didn't actually start until feb 86 then it cant be march 86.... so all I can says is

Hmm, Japanese wikipedia page for the Shonen Captain says Guyver started in February 1985: http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/月刊少年キャプテン

well if Guyver appeared in the first Shonen captain then it must be jan (i.e feb issue ) of 1985... meaning the english wiki is wrong...

 

maybe the seller  or /and wiki writer pressed the wrong number when typing !! ? ive emailed them to ask if the date is 85 or 86...

 

if that issue is from 86 the only other explanantion I can think of is if its a reprint of the first instalment,  but that is really doubtful...

 

 

really interesting reading the wiki's as I hadn't realised the long publication gaps... a 2 then 5 year gap?  or can I just not trust anything I read on the net any more!! 

 

 I can kind of forgive Takaya a bit more for the slowness of progression if theres 7 years of work missing!

cheers cannibal, I was about to go and grab that info.

our wiki is drawing information directly from the japanese guyver wiki article. Durendal translated it all and so It's far more likely to be correct.

 

Aether, I have the original shonen captain guyver volume 1. actually I have 2 copies of it.

It was definitely published in march 1986.

The engish wikipedia article for guyver is not as reliable as the info we have,  it probably got it's date info from that ebay listing.

or vice versa.

I think its pretty safe to say it was 1985...

 

first off that's when shonen captain was first published, and then it makes sense for the first tankobon to be published a year later... and also wasn't out of control produced in 86? I cant imagine a manga getting an oav a month after its been released!

 

oh well it was interesting finding all this out!

Hello all! I just signed up. I have been foloowing this site for a long time but had nothing to add to all the great input. As I researched Shonen Captain Monthly from 1985 I came across the below in February of this year. Per the wikipedia on Yoshiki Takaya, his first work under his real name was Guyver from 02/18/1985. After researching Guyver's first appearance I reached out to a few people in Japan that were selleing older mangas on ebay and asked that they locate this manga for me. Both gentlemen in Japan were very gracious to my request and I have since purchased 2 copies of Shonen Captain Monthly from 02/18/1985 as it does in fact contain the first true appearance of Guyer. I have been a HUGE fan of this manga since I first saw the anime in 1995 and have been fixated since. Especially Guyver 1. The chronology makes sense if the first manga was serialized in Shonen Captain Monthly in 1985 that the first Tankouban would be released in 1986. I have attached a few pics below just to show some of the pictures from one of my copies of the original manga, as well as my Guyver shelf of awesome for anyone who is interested. Please feel free to ask me any questions as I have spent a LONG time researching this particular topic. Thanks!

Hello and welcome Guyver 1!  ( I cant believe no one else has used that name on the site before??)

 

so it seems that you can 100% confirm its 1985 if you have a copy yourself... that's good to know. it seems that whoever did that auction and the English wikepedia got the wrong year (or pressed the wrong key when typing? )

 

the first two pics appear to be the same from ebay, but I like the pic of your Guyver shrine! and especially how you have made your shonen captain and tankobon 1 levitate!! very impressive. :)

Thanks so much Aether! (I was SO happy I could get that name!) I can confirm this is the first appearance and the person did key in the wrong year. I will send pics of the side of the Shonen Captain Monthly as the spine does in fact state the year of 1985 on it later this evening for all to see. I have 2 copies of this manga now. The one on display is a decent copy, but I have a near mint one in my safe with all of my other expensive comics and nerd stuff :)

 

Question to all, if I provide clear scans of the cover to this manga as well as the title page, can anyone translate it for me? I wish I could read Japanese, but alas I am not skilled in reading it. Thanks all!

i'd like to see a cat burgalars face when he cracks your safe and finds shonen captain feb 1985 and a copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 etc. and hasn't a clue what they are!!

Some good pics of the shonen captain would be cool...

also If possible i would like to see a good scan of the title page ( the 2nd pic you posted)

as for translating Durendal and Yuki are in charge of that department , im sure if they have the time they might help you out...

Hello again, I will post more pics now. It looks like I will have to do this in a few posts, so please be patient :)

 

I have attached a pic of the spine clearly showing the year of 1985, the front cover, some pics of the title page, the side of a page, and note where he is breaking Gregole's arms, in the original there is no blood spatter. It was added in the tankouban. Let me know if any other pics are needed. I hope to hear how they are translated. Thanks all!!

haha, well I saw the corner of a spiderman thing in your guyver shrine pic so it was just a wild guess at a comic I know that is expensive!

it was just funny to me, the image of a burglar rubbing his grubby hands together expecting cash, jewellery or gold and then he opens it and finds some comic books and he's all like - WTF ?! :)

 

but I suppose some of them can be worth just as much if, not more than those things anyway, and that's not even taking into account sentimental value...

but anyway, thanks for the pics

I am interested in why it says 3D as well. Hopefully Yuki can translate when time permits. I can't wait for the Figma figure to be released. Should be pretty sweet! Thanks for checking out the Shonen Captain pics :)

Based on the advertisement Yuki translated, I would think that it would be fist out in January but dated February 18,1985.

if they are consistent with their dates, then shonen captain would have been the 18th every month.  shonen ace of course being the 25th?

we would need more data to be sure. I think it is a safe assumption but if we want to say for definite then we need to see march issue and april.
