Masamune Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Okay, my finger has slipped from The Guyver pulse and I sure as hell have a lot of catching up to do, however, when I learned about Valkyria and the new Guyver unit, my first reaction was .... 'Um, whut?' This came completely out of left-field with no foreshadowing whatsoever. So Kronos have created their own artificial Guyver unit? They can do that? Since when? Are we just supposed to roll with that because... boobies? I don't know, I'm just not comfortable with this whole plot twist. It seemed contrived on Takaya's part in order to introduce a wild card into the series, now that Makishima has turned full blown bad-guy. Not to mention Guyot's back on the scene and we're going to see a Guyver-Zoalord at some stage. Oh, look, a convenient new Guyver unit has appeared. /cynicism Quote
*Jess♥ Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 she does seem like an insert. I don't think the overall story would have suffered if she were not introduced. that said, I think she is a jolly nice insert and does add some nice backstory too. we need to be careful here because I don't know how much you have caught up yet. so I won't give any details of her background yet. leave that for other guys and liberal use of the spoiler tag! Bio-Boosted Dude Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 To be honest, when you do consider how abruptly she showed up and the latest chapter, she appears to simply be a device in order to expand on Lisker for Lisker's sake. I suppose you could argue that she lacks any importance for herself and is basically just Takaya creatively rectifying his mistake of killing Guyver II off so early. I think perhaps the only real disappointment is the fact that she isn't an original design or character, right down to the name. That does support your theory of her being just an insert. But like Ryuki said, she is interesting to see! I don't mind her at all. Quote
Cannibal Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 I was impressed a lot when she arrived. And looking at new chapters I'm impressed even more (In a parallel universe Oswald is just an insert, an Val is a true Guyver 2 ) Quote
MoogleEspada Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 (edited) Um well, it was kinda foreshadowed? She was a character in the OVA Out of Control. Although, she served no real purpose and was just the Guyver 2 unit. I'm not sure why they decided to go with her over Lisker, but bringing her into the manga was kind of a nod I suppose. Overall, she's very lackluster and just slightly serves to balance out the insane Zoalord team, but if you're interested in her backstory, I'm guessing it's the same as in the OVA? Quick warning about the OVA, in case someone googles it because of this post or something, it's hard to find because the unit binding with Valkyria does kind of a tentacle rape thing. *V Guyver Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 So far, not very impressed other than the fact she kicks as. But we've had mostly fan service and we only now just scratched on her background. Right now she's just a new potentially awesome character, and a filler for missing sex appeal that some wanted. Yet, I'm expecting some awesome stuff. The Mangaka rarely disappoints me. over the decades, only the cliche (that plot device is soooo god damn over used) Zoalords aging plot thing with their crystals, and the death of Guyver II had irked me. Enzyme-eternal Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 Hmmm well she's from the OVA and let's be honest she's here for fanservice, not that I'm complaining but she's interesting enough as a character to work. I like that she's working with Guyot and actually seems to be relevant to the story, but it's still early and Guyver has had characters that don't get much depth before dying...I'm looking at you Caerleon. Aether Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 i wouldnt say i wasnt impressed, its cool. but at a point in the story where youre thinking hmm, i wonder how Takaya is going to tie everything up?? and how long it will take him?? he then goes and throws even more things to tie in and that will need to be tied up.... just more contributing factors to the fact Guyver wont finish until were about 60 years old and Takaya's in his 90's. *V Guyver Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 Now now, I'm sure it will only take 10 more years... at the most. Quote
Masamune Posted July 17, 2013 Author Posted July 17, 2013 (edited) Come on, her counterpart existing in the OVA isn't foreshadowing. That OVA was a separate retelling loosely based of the early manga with its own self-contained continuity. Foreshadowing would be for someone in the previous chapters of the manga to allude to this chick and her artificial Guyver unit. It never happens, hence why - to me - it comes across as a bit of an ass-pull by Takaya-san. And I agree, that just when it seemed like we might be approaching end-game in the series, we have another curve ball thrown in which will doubtless pad out the story for another ten years. I only hope Takaya is still around to finish it... Edited July 17, 2013 by Masamune Quote
