When you watch enough anime you start noticing those detials. I'm awfully sick myself from the backgrounds in the Naruto, when you see 5 stright minutes of only the characters talking, but every other person in the background with an unanimated face while just short of a close up, it really stands out, especially if they are pretty damn ugly. The old Naruto series didn't have that issue, but Shippuuden sadly does.

i don't notice that.

but what i do notice is if the background looks like a stage prop, or if it looks like a real place that i could potentially explore.

wow...

i thought it would be better to watch dragonball kai to remove the unneeded extra time in battles etc.

but i can't believe how much quality story telling they have removed.

like in DBkai, we see gohan basically go from screaming brat to survival expert in the space between an episode.

they took out so much that really adds to his character.

it's a travesty.

It's to be expected. Imagine One Piece without it's fillers. Tons of enjoyable stories would be lost along with the good. It's simply how things are. Not to mention you actually lose some screen detaisl for the HD conversion. They had to cut 20% of the actual original screen animation to fit it in. It's like watching the A-Team only to see each and every single close up of Mr.T lakcing his mohawk. Thus is the nature of these adjusted series.

well if it was something like naruto, where filler is just that, filler, i would welcome cuts.

but the extra material in dragonball z is not filler in my opinion. it's padding and character enrichment.

the filler in naruto is just crap. it doesn't develop the characters, give them extra life, or serve any purpose to the story. it's the rusk in cheap burgers.

seeing just exactly what yamucha was doing, getting some information on why he fell out with bulma, seeing what had actually become of lunch san, seeing exactly how gohan learnt so many important life stories, actually getting a real idea of how long the serpent path was..

this stuff is just so important, even if it wasn't in the original manga or whatever, I feel like they took the manga and made it 1000 times better.

dragonball z the anime is like a full course meal. dragonball kai is like a bowl of ice cream.

Naruto- generally speaking i dont mind naruto / shippuden filler BUT naruto filler in Shippuden is a bit too far.

DRAGONBALL - oh my dream came true  .... upon investigating aquiring Dragonball z in japanese with eng subs (because a good portion of the discs i have are trashed )i found out that it is currently being rereleased in the 'dragon box'in untouched frame format in original japanese with english subs AND with ORIGINAL JAPANESE SOUNDTRACK with english DUB... at last!!! no disrespect to the people that scored it for english transmission, but it was crap compared to the japanese score...

this is a big deal because all other releases have been cak, the stupidist of which was the 'dragonball z remastered' where they had the genius idea of cropping the original 4:3 frame to 16:9 by simply chopping characters head and feet off!!!!! :bleh: . (i think this may also have had my dream audio mix but with a destroyed picture whats the point??)

it been released up to ep 168 so far but only thing is all files i find are mkv and i wont bore you again with my predicament with mkv, and to buy on region 1 dvd a volume with about 40 eps are £30-£40 / $30-$40 -kind of annoying when they cost the same in dollars so the exchange rate doesnt work out at all in my favour

im stuck as to wether bother to get these... i dont have money to burn and ive seen the series at least 5 times, but at the same time it is one of my favourite anime ever  ...

you know i didn't realise they had chopped it.

I wondered why it was 16:9 when i was sure the original was 4:3.

though I need to be thankful since I am pretty sure this has no edited bits and the audio is the original.

that new version sounds nice.

but actually, I think i would rather watch kai as a second watch through.

the image quality is so superior, it really blows me away.

for anyone that was following, I am at the point where gohan is about to fight dabura.

babidi is waiting at the bottom of the ship.

you know it.

i found it funny, the other name, bibidi, sounds like DVD.

thinking about my experience watching some fights in Kai, and then watching similar fights ins Z, I think kai is staged better and better score.

I think if it's your first time watching Dragon Ball Z, you wouldn' t mind the long filler animations that they make. In a way, it brings emphasis to the tension and pressure the characters are going through. But after you watched it again, that's where it gets to you. Especially when you are watching it once a week. I haven't seen the english version so I really can't comment on that. I haven't seen Kai as well so I can't comment on that either. But watching Dragon Ball Z was one of the most memorable experiences I had a decade ago. If you ask me to sit through the same thing again, I don't think I'll have the stomach for it.

It was a bit of the trade off there, kai Pretty much how DBZ should of been paced, but much cleaner and with a much better audio track (thanks to long time videogame composer for the franchise).

Posted

yeah.. actually, I skipped the fight between goten and trunks at the tenkaichi budokai.

some fighting does get a bit too much sometimes and i pretty much knew what it would be. all i needed to do was skip to the end, 2 episodes away. I didn't see how it would be an impressive battle since there wasn't the safety of the planet on the line or anything important.

sacrilegious talk  missing episodes?? better music in kai??? i dont think so

i dont have anything against kai, i havent even watched it properly yet, but i just think there was a medium beteween the 2 (z and kai) that could have been met but wasnt.

Kai music sounds like last night at the proms!! its too grand and orchestral for me, the orignal music is best- so there ;) ...

i like a crisp picture but prefer the feel of the original animation with something like this series...

actually this makes way for a new debate @

http://www.japan-legend.com/forum/index.php/topic/5751-old-cell-anime-vs-cg-enhanced-anime/

and another thing i thought kai was going to be 100 eps long its on ep 94 and its towards the end of the cell saga??? how is that going to be all of Z???

comparison of the releazses of dbz

i don't see how this is night at the prom?
this music gets me fired up!

the original music is good but it doesn't really evoke a fighting spirit in me.
I don't feel my blood rushing to my head and i don't feel like jumping up off my seat.
dragonball kai has made me feel that way!

anywy, I doubt very much kai will be 100 episodes long.
if it is, then I think there will be a continuation series.

maybe its how its recorded ? i dare say recording in the 80's wasnt as goosd as now, the new stuff does sound very -like the anime looks - crisp... i can hear the instruments clearly and it sounds very clear, very orchestral and live to me..

dont get me wrong i think the new sore in itself is good, but for me it just doesnt gel with the anime, i guess ive just got the old score ingrained in my brain

really getting towards the end now.

majin boo is horrific.

everyone on earth is dead

dragonball z is now very very depressing.

i don't feel like watching.

i don't get joy out of the fights when the situation is so bleak.

i don't get joy out of the fights when the situation is so bleak.

you need sadness to experience joy and bleakness to observe the light...

the situation just adds to the evilness of Buu and the significance of Goku and the z fighters needing to win!!

no, that's not true. I don't need my dog to die to appreciate the fact he is alive.

you don't need such catastrophic things to occur.

I loved goku's first fight against cell.

that was amazing.

I haven't enjoyed any of this bit with majin boo.

mainly because the characters don't seem to care about what happens to earth. it doesn't matter because they have the dragon balls. and their motivation was always to fight stronger opponents. goku never cared about protecting earth, he made that absolutely clear when he let vegeta and piccolo live.

it shows goku's character. he just wants to fight strong opponents.

they never cared about the people on earth, so these events had no meaning.

it showed how evil majin boo is... well i'm sorry but freeza and cell were just as evil. cell only held the tournament because of his joy for fighting, otherwise he would have just killed everyone. it's completely pointless to even do this because it doesn't make him any different from the others before him.

it just takes away the reason for urgency. it takes away the hope of the common person.

it makes the fights empty and soulless.

you may not need your dog to die to appreciate hes alive, however some people would, and which everway you look at it, you need a dog in the first place!!. i get your point but i actually meant, that one thing defines another.

i think again youre excpecting too much from dbz. the majority of the fights are souless and just about who has the most power. theres no where near as much character development or emotion involved in them as for example -of course- naruto...

all you need to know is goku is a magnet for bad dudes and that to get to him they dont care about earthlings dieing so the only one who can save earth is goku. thats it no more no less. its actually funny to think that the strongest humans are actully yamcha and krillin.

saying goku doesnt care about the earth isnt true. he sees himself as an honorary human. he let vegeta and picollo live not because he wanted to keep them alive as playthings for his fighting amusement he did it because hes goku. goku wouldnt hurt a fly. unless it hurt something else, his friends or his family.

he didnt need to kill them because he had already beat them, and i think somehow sensed they werent totally evil. he even tried to not kill freeza by his own hand , until he was pushed to land a fatal attack.

no denying gokus selfish with his thirst for fighting, but i dont think he would do it at the expense of peoples lives.

to be brutually honest DBZ peaks at the cell games saga. i dont like the whole buu saga as much as the rest but its still cool, it is what it is.

yeah I think we are in agreement there.

cell seemed like the pinnacle to me and it is definitely a come-down from that. the whole concept of saiyaman was just stupid. I hated that, was very bored wanted to get past it.

wanted to see super saiyajin 3... and now that i have seen it, it seems like there is not much more to be had.

i guess that is it really, there was never much in the way of character development, foreshadowing etc.

there was never any really overlying plot. just fighting.

and now we are at pretty much the end part of the whole thing, they are just trying to top everything before it.

they are going for the overkill.

I'm thinking I will just quickly read the manga to finish it off and then watch db kai as it is released.

I need to watch something more involved.

I think i've had the best that dragon ball had to offer. goku's fight in the cell games.

oh and of course some amazing earlier fights such as krillin versus jackie chun. that was brilliant.

the earlier series dragonball was much much better.

what shall i continue onto.. maybe to give one-piece a thorough chance?

Posted (edited)

yeah the whole saiyaman saga was not really the best thing ever  but deffinately some classic fights along the way. amongst others picollo vs android 17 always sticks in my mind and i love stuff like when tienshinhan keeps blasting cell with his tri blasts to prevent him from escaping, its not massively epic, but it was just the heart Tien had to keep going, knowing cell could potentially just get out and kill him afterwards. stuff like that makes DB for me...

anyway

i started watching yu yu hakusho im only half way through it and am enjoying it even though it is a kind of DBZ rip off its still quite good and done in its own unique way.

despite my bad exprience with the english dub to keep me going not watching naruto i decided to try bleach... im not decided on it yet im not that many eps into it...

and as for one piece i just dont know - pirates just dont grab me, but maybe im just dismissing it because i dont want to have to download nearly 500 episodes :lol:

well... i've already done that ^^;

now i just hope it wasn't wasted effort!

hmm, I don't remember the fight between piccolo and juunanago.

was that when they were all beaten up after those 3 escaped and started looking for goku?

Posted

oh! i will say this much...

I was very pleased with how mister satan accidentally befriended boo.

it's like... he actually contributed to 'saving the world'.

it's a weird sort of redemption.

it's one of teh qualities of dragonball that is so powerful. on one hand the series is so incredibly shallow and soulless. on the other hand, it has such complicated issues being played out between some characters.

edit:

and i love dragonball kai.

the music makes a BIG difference.

dragonball kai has exciting and invigorating positive music.

dragonball z has weird spooky and desolate music.

i dont know if you noticed but bibidi is the son of babadi and bibidi made buu.

so its bibidi babadi buu..

kinda of a small joke in that.

for me, i loved the tournament portion of the buu saga. after that... it got, convaluted? well. boring.

Posted

oh that is interesting! i had not realised that!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo

but that is cinderella?

and majin buu is more like a genie isn't he?

I guess it doesn't really matter a whole lot, as it's a good enough reference to disney.

edit:

since aladdin came out 1992 and majin buu appeared around 1993 sometime (can't seem to find any data on that but i worked it out roughly through maths)

it seems that majin buu is pretty clearly based on the genie from aladdin.

Posted

err... i never thought that their names where based off of disney! i always thought it was a major coincidence...

but now that ya mentioned it, didn't buu come from that lamp thing that the M boys used to drain gohan at the tournament? its been a while since i watched dbz.

Posted (edited)

Majin Buu is not the end of it. I won't say anything else, but this really made me chuckle:

Fusion of Mister Satan and Goku. <img src="http://www.japan-legend.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/lol.gif" class="bbc_emoticon" alt="">

Note that this is not a spoiler, but something funny you should notice. Not even sure if this is present in the anime as I saw it in the manga. edit: decided to use spoiler tags as this might give away the punch line.<br><br>Mr. Toriyama does have a knack of using ordinary things as names. If you noticed, around 90% of their names comes from household items.
