This is amazing, incredible news

The Power Rangers have come home.

Haim Saban's newly formed Saban Brands company has re-acquired from Disney the rights to the "Power Rangers" franchise that built Saban's fortune in the mid-1990s. Saban has cut a deal with Nickelodeon for 20 new "Power Rangers" episodes, while the library of some 700 older segs will begin airing on cabler Nicktoons later this year.

Saban Brands prexy Elie Dekel said Haim Saban approached Disney about retrieving the Power Rangers franchise more than six months ago because he was convinced it had potential for a strong revival. Disney has maintained some "Power Rangers" merchandise licensing and has had episodes of the show airing in foreign markets. But the property clearly hasn't been a priority for the Mouse.

Dekel sees great promise in introducing the Power Rangers -- revolving around a group of ordinary youths who can "morph" into superheroes -- to a new generation of kids through the TV series, live touring events and feature films, among other efforts.

"Haim has always felt that the brand could truly be evergreen, and while Disney continued to produce the series and support consumer products part of the business, we still see tremendous untapped potential," Dekel said.

Originally known as "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers," the low-budget series debuted in 1993 and consisted primarily of recycled footage from Japan of monsters battling teenage superheroes whose voices were dubbed by American voice-over actors. Saban said new episodes, which will start airing in 2011, will be produced in a similar manner. Mr. Saban also said he felt that Disney “did not develop the property and exploit it in the way that it deserves.”

Hell Yeah!!!!!

this is legit info about SABAN re-acquiring the right to the Power Rangers franchise. Here are links to the pages of the New York Times, Variety, Hollywood Reporter, L.A. Times and a few other places.

this video says my reaction.

These links pretty much say the same thing but some say a bit more than others.

So we get a Season 18 set for the first quarter of 2011 for about 20 episodes, re-runs on Nicktoons and a new toy line from Bandai.

Not particularly excited, or even slightly interested in this. As long as Sentai continues to be popular outside of Japan, and as long as there are sentais to copy from, I certainly feel that the franchise will continue.

one of the articles said something about the campy martial arts not bothering parents of today.

does that mean they're going to stick to the campy feel of the 1st season, cause if they are.... thats not necessarily a plus for them.. in fact it could turn out devastatingly bad for them.

this is not the era for campy fighting moves and over the top in your face morals... people dont go for that kind of thing anymore.

Dekel envisions making the show more contemporary and taking it back "to its original DNA, with more charm, humor and campiness that was so much a part of the early seasons that over time got somewhat subdued."

uh oh....

i disagree with the claim that people don't go for campy stuff anymore.

it may be that there simply isn't anything around that is campy and actually good.

I mean... I would still like to watch the original power rangers.

and part of the reason i'm completely not interested in power rangers recent series is because they take themselves too seriously and end up being lame.

and the in-your-face morals,,, well morals hardly even exist in these shows anymore and that's part of what actually made it for me.

i would struggle to figure out why this might not be era for this kind of thing, i don't think there are such a thing as era where certain thing will work or not.

i think it all depends on how you market something.

did i read it on here or did dekared tell me in person?

apparently, they are planning on drawing from previous year instead of current year. this means they know exactly what footage they have to work with and should give more consistency.

so new series would use shinkenger.. i think.

ye bro, i told ya at mums the other day. a bandai executive stated last year that they would be releasing shinkenger toys this year, plus it makes more sense to plan a story from a sentai thats already finished, as they can plan the whole thing. unlike with the transitions from megaranger to PRIS, or timeranger to PRTF, where they mistakenly thought megaranger was a series set in space, and so designed the PR accordingly, an then it turned out the megarangers didn't actually do much in space. and where they thought timeranger was about time travelling rangers, then it turned out they did almost no time travelling at all. kinda ruined their plans and stuff they had written.

with the type of messages Elie mentions in the interview that he wants to project to kids (eating right, exercising etc.) they dont really need to be too "in your face"... if carried out well than the morals they want the show to emulate can help raise the popularity of the show for kids and parents.

and as far as making it from shinkenger footage goes... that would be a pretty good idea. since goseiger isnt well....good.

so in short.... kudos to the saban executives... they can really do a good job with the series.

It really doesn't matter whether goseiger is good or not. Zyuranger wasn't as good as MMPR, and ohranger was atrocious. They tend to change it for PR, and the sentai often has no bearing on the adaption. Rest assured, after the shinkenger adaption is succesful, the year after we will see goseiger adapted, and it could be good or not.

Wow! Those are both REALLY good!

but if i understood correctly, those aren't the actual actors, just that the names are correct.

like the actors have not been decided on yet.

it was pretty cool anyway.

from that news reel, you get the impression that they are coming back as the original power rangers in the zyu rangers suits etc.

are they not going to be using shinkenger footage?

it'll look pretty dodgy if they 'green-screen' the zyu rangers over teh shinenger footage ^^;
