daveblackeye152 Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 All right I know that this page was hacked and appears to have been royally screwed up but 1) Could this happen again? 2) Can we figure out who did it? 3) Most importaly can we make them burn? I'm happy that this board it back. Quote
McAvoy Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 Not really you can do about it unless you want to hack their/his site if they/he has one. Then that just starts a war between us and them, and I'm afraid that we're ill equipped to start hacking other sites. The best protection is just regularly back up the old files, so when like now when we have nothing left. Quote
daveblackeye152 Posted November 4, 2005 Author Posted November 4, 2005 Oh well. Clean sheet it is! Too bad about the old/classic topics being lost though. That's sad Quote
Armageddon Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 The board is finally back up and I can post again. YAY guys! It seems that parts of the board are still kinda outta it. I'm pretty sure the guys are working on it, though. I'm crossing my fingers that they've got backups of things, so maybe the Great Topics section can be restored. The guys will let us know about it eventually...I hope. Quote
Matt Bellamy Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 Well, if we ever manage to restore the old posts and forums properly, then the newly created ones will just have all their posts moved accordingly, and life will go on as always. It's an intresting note that, when setting the mod permissions, I noticed that ALL the old forums were still listed. They are here somewhere, lurking in the shadows... We just got to find a way to restore them. Quote
Thunder Demon1472669266 Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 Odds are, Matt, that the old files may only be but 'ghosts'. Also, if they are there, then the files were protected and have only been hidden. However, my money personally (and I'm really kinda dissappointed too) is betting on that the old files from the pre-hack period are either gone gone, or the that if they are there, the files are, how to put this? Empty? Empty as in, just the file name and extension exist, and nothing else. And that the permissions only have the name, and not a copy of the actual documents or files. But, I'm pretty well aware that regardless of the safety protections, odds are at least 1,000 people can hack through. But, might as well as keep as many people from hacking. The more determined the are, the more likely they will hack through. However, odds are, this will be a very rare occasion indeed given there is little of interest to an intelligence person or to any corporate or government angency, regardless of the postings. Even the profiles don't require too much as I recall, at least not important information like SSN for us Americans or the equivelent elsewhere. Government facilities are more likely to get hacked. Truthfully, it could have been simply a fluke, though I highly doubt it. Only time can truly tell for sure. On the side, a blank slate isn't always good, nor is it always bad. It just is. All things no matter how big or small must come to an end. Quote
nidhogg Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 The person who did the hacking, being immolated? sounds like fun. But I digress, violence only begets violence. So, what I say to the fact the sites back is yay. Quote
