Did the first film ruin things?

Featured Replies

Seeing as the original film from the 90's got horrible reviews and how it was perceived as a Power Ranger knock off film than to those not familiar with the manga or the anime.

Do you think it ruined things earlier on for the Guyver franchise?

Probably yeah.

I mean, sure, we still got Dark Hero, with a much smaller budget, and it was a much better movie... but essentially it still had to live with what happened in the first movie.

That being said, I doubt it really hurt the franchise at all... Since it was pretty much almost unknown anyway at that point. Only a small North American Anime community even knew about it at the time.

If anything, nowadays it probably brings more people into the community... Since watching and making fun of bad movies is kind of a big thing. And they watch one of those videos and hear that "Oh there is an anime and manga about this... Might be worth checking out" kind of deal.

It was just a film suiting the era
. The bumbling fools that are the the zoanoids and the Hollywood stereotypical african/american guy didn't suit the tone of the guyver . They didn't do a good job condensing/retelling the story, but Hollywood  has never been good at adapting anime/comics. With the limited, by today's standards, effects available at the time I think they did a decent job.

I don't think it hurt the franchise, only the chances of a bigger budget on the next film or future films in America.

I think Japanese/oriental culture wasn't represented very well in America/Europe around that time, prodded and poked for amusent. I think the film was represents this, so the original tone of the guyver was lost. That was the failure for me.

I loved dark hero though.
