Has anybody seen this?  Is anybody reading this?  I have the ebooks sitting in my playbook for a long time and it was just recently that I started reading it.  What prompted me to read it?  Watching the series of course.  All I can say is, WOW!!  This has got to be one of the finest high fantasy series that I've seen or read.  The series is quite faithful to the novel with a few differences which is quite understandable.

I'm sure you guys have an idea of what I am talking about.  A Game of Thrones is the first novel from the Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin.   I can't believe that I'm actually rooting for the Imp.  I must say, Peter Dinklage does play Tyrion Lanister quite well.  I can see why he won an award for his performance.

I'm surprised that nobody has been talking about this here.  It's one of the hottest series in HBO and everyone is talking about it.  Any thoughts on this?

awesome show, isn't it!
i've been watching it religiously when its on, just gets better and better.
i didn't mention it here before because i didn't think anyone else would be interested as the 'what your downloading or watching' thread is only for anime.
don't really get into reading novels as much as i should, i'm more of a' wait until it comes out at the movies' type person. so when you finish reading the volumes, please, no spoilers. :-D
i definitly agree with you, im all for the imp and the show is full of great acting. the only thing i hate is that they only make 8-10 episodes a year, and i'm sure the last episode for this third season aired this monday. i know something is brewing with his charactor and looks like their going to leave it for next season(can't come quick enough).

don't you just feel like strangling king geoffrey?

gets exciting for me when main charactors get killed off the way they do, you don't see it coming until the end.

Yes, there was this internet meme that I saw, it says that George R. R. Martin creates characters we love then kills them all off.

I just recently started watching, and I'm reading the book as I watch it.

Ugh, king joffrey is a prick. He's the main reason why all the houses are in a mess. I'm looking forward to the day that he gets killed. I would have said that GRRM keeps the most annoying characters alive, but then I remember what happened to Viserys and his golden crown.  Jon Snow is also one of my favorite characters.

I'm actually confused as who is supposed to be the good guy. We were all rooting for the starks and sees the Lannisters as the antagonist, but I can't say the same of Tyrion. Also, what of the targaryens? I wondering how all three of the events would combine in to one great climax. Would the great dragons join forces with the seven kingdoms to battle the white walkers?

it does feel that this is the way its heading, but, with whats been seen so far its hard to say, the dragons might get killed off!

are you up to date with the series, episodes? just wondering as i don't want to reveal something you havn't seen yet?(aaahhh, well, read yet aswell i guess)

one thing so far which is bugging me is the tyrell's. you kind of have a feel for the other families charactors motives and can judge their decisions and their reasoning behind it. but the tyrell's, mmmmm, i don't know, their sitting back, playing everyones game, they're sceaming something ofcourse, but for who, i feel that they're aligned with someone other than the lannisters.

Not, I'm not up to date with the series, as of yesterday, I up to episode 8 of the first season.  I don't mind spoilers, since I already know who dies and who lives.  But I'm guessing that by the time I'm done with the books, I'll be the one who's going to be giving you spoilers.  Season 3 & 4 only covers book 3, and I have with me books 1 to 5.

So far the Tyrell's have not made an appearance, nor have I read of them, but I do know Joffrey is involved which affects Sanza, which in turn will involved Tyrion.

only seen the first season, oh, your in for a treat 'cause the meaty stuff is just about to begin.

if you haven't read book 3 yet, then leave it closed until you've atleast seen upto episode (edit) of the third season.

your so lucky, you can watch all these episodes back to back, don't have to wait every monday for one episode and then 13months between seasons, well, until you see the end of season 3, then you'll need to wait for the fourth season. yea, i know, you'll finish all the books by then, but its always better on the big screen mate.

apparently, a friend of my sister inlaws has read the books some years ago and has mentioned that so far the tv series has pretty much been kept faithful to the books accept for some slightly small aspects which aren't really important.

and she mentions that the tv series is just as enjoyable.

Let me guess, Season 3 ends with the Red Wedding?  So far, that's the only real shocker that I know of.

Dude, I waited 3 years before I could watch season 1.  How would you count that as lucky?  I was juggling between watching the TV first or reading the book first.  Yeah, I like reading the book as well as watching it.  I'm actually watching it first then reading it, as the books give more details that the TV episodes might have missed.  Besides, watching the TV first helps me with the images in my head when I read.  Usually when I read the novels first, I would hate the adaptation, but this is an exception.

Another exception (being a little off topic here) was stardust by Neil Gaiman.  I actually liked the movie than the novel.  I hated the novel, but loved the movie.

I must say, giving the Game of Thrones the mini series treatment works very well.  I actually prefer this than to have it compressed into one movie.  At least this gives the producers the opportunity to flesh out the story and let the audience absorb what's happening.  I think if LOTR was given this treatment, then it would be a smash hit as well.

aaahhhh, you know of the red wedding, damn, but you haven't seen it yet! so thats something to look forward too.

i didn't know you waited so long before seeing it. isn't it readily aired on tv where you are? another thought was you just downloaded and watched season one?

Posted

Ahaha, yeah, that's something to look forward too.  It's always different to have to actually watch it than imagining it.

And yes, it's aired in HBO but during late nights.  Wasn't able to catch it then simply because I wanted to read the book first.  Since they aren't showing it anymore, I had to resort to "back channels" in watching it.  I guess you can say it was convenient for me too, since I can watch it straight without having to wait for weeks.

With the Starks nearly wiped out, do you think they'll still regain their standing in Winterfell?  Who do you think will be the final victor sitting on the iron throne?  I'm rooting for a Stark, but it seems GRRM has this habit of killing a Stark.  And with the condition of Bran, do you think he will still be able to bear children? Although the though of House Stark ending easily comes to mind.

i wish i can answer some of your questions, but i really can't without hinting/revealing too much to you at the moment. although you know about the red wedding, there are still all the little fiddley things between now and then that you may not know of. believe me durendal, some little 5minute scenes are real doozies.

i don't think you've come across the red priestess yet?

jeez, im shaking, but i really can't  tell you, hehehehehe.

and stop reading peoples blogs about game of thrones on the internet, itll just spoil it for you ^^;

( And with the condition of Bran, do you think he will still be able to bear children?),well, i think he only broke his back, not his balls.

( Who do you think will be the final victor sitting on the iron throne?) well, at the moment i'd have to say stormborn, but its anyones guess, to be honest with you, i've got this itch that tyrion could be the last man standing!

damn it, i want to say more but i won't, you'll just have to sit through a game of thrones marathon this weekend.

I know what you are saying.  It's the little bit of surprise that makes this series so good aside from the lovable characters.  Well, I just finished Season 1 and off to season 2. But I want to finish reading book 1 first before I move on to season 2.  I'm roughly around 15% of the book or around episode 2 of season one.  Don't want to miss anything.  The book can probably clarify some of the things that I missed in the series.  Like when Daenarys was talking in Dothraki, there was supposed to be sub-titles, but I can't read them because of the stupid hard coded foreign subtitles.

which episode was this,(i can't remember her speaking too much dothraki in the first season) i might be able to help you out by imbedding some video or atleast list what she says if the video doesn't work

I can't remember which episode, but it's about the time where Khal Drogo was injured.  I think Khaleesi were trying to save some slaves but dialogue ensues with some of the Khalasar, Daenarys and Khal Drogo.  There's a lot of dialogue in different parts of the episode.  Don't worry, I'm sure those are just minor dialogues.

Thanks for that.  But I've now finished reading book 1 and on to watching season 2.

I'm impressed that the dialogues are exactly the same.  quote for quote.  Although I think that they were pressed for time in the later part of season one as they didn't show how Jaime Lannister was captured nor the premonition of Bran and Rickon.

i really can't remember if they showed his capture in season two as a flashback, but i guess they have to leave something to the imagination.

about bran's premonition, to which are you refering? as you'll find he has a few in this coming season.

Saw seasons 1-3 and it is an ok series for me, lots of interesting characters that I am rooting for and the lore is cool as well, not the best series in my opinion ( I prefer supernatural) but it gets the job done.

Oh, him being a greenseer is already evident in the first book.  The crow also talks to him about flying.  As I watch season 2, it is only there that they are hinting at Bran's abilities.  Currently watching season 2 and I can't seem to remember the book ever explicitly saying Renly was gay.  It really makes me uncomfortable watching Renly and Loras getting it on.

(another supernatural fan, hi  )

i loved supernatural probably upto the end of season 6 and from then i think the series has gone done hill, for me anyway. i keep watching it only because dean reminds me of myself, tough guy with a bit of humour on the outside(impenetrable suit of armour, all soft and emotional inside)

its alittle like stargate sg1, any fan(including me) can tell you that the series really ended at season9, don't even know why they did a season 10! 'WWWHHHYYYYYY'

Supernatural fan here as well...well, up until season 7.  7 and 8 were just....out there.

anyway, is this Game of Throne series really that interesting?  I was loaned season 1 from a friend but never got around to watching it and returned it to him as he asked for it back.  But, is it worth it to purchase the series on boxset?  From what I've been told so far, it's like Lord of the Rings meets The Sopranos.

Posted

i wouldn't say its lord of the rings meets the sopranos.

i would say its more in the realm of excalibur and probably beowulf.

everyone has different tastes, i find the drama, mystery and dialog watchable.(durendal could probably describe this better than i)

try to get your hands on, and watch the first few episodes before rushing out and purchasing season1.

(Supernatural fan here as well...well, up until season 7. 7 and 8 were just....out there.)

i know, the whole purgatory and leviathans thing, half of the episodes were just filler aswell :suicide: lucky season ten is it.

ooopps, better keep this on subject, otherwise i'll have two feet kicking my backside, durendals and my own :shy:

It happens.  As long as the topic isn't taken too off topic.  but it's best to stay on track.  I just wonder what the last 2 seasons will bring us.

But as for GoT, I heard it wasn't on Netflix and I don't have HBO, so would anyone possibly know any other way or some streaming site to go view it at.  If it's a site, then PM it to me as links for those types of places shouldn't be posted in the forums.  Keeps the site out of trouble this way.

Posted

I'm not aware of any streaming sites for this, but chances are, if you look at the right place, it might not be that difficult to find.  Although I do get mine via torrent from eztv despite us having HBO and is currently replaying the 3rd season in the wee hours of the night.

I'm not sure if comparing it to Lord of the Rings would be right.  Although they share the same concept and genre (midieval settings), the story is driven not by a single faction.  There are three settings which intertwines with each other.  You have conflict on Kings Landing which deals with the political aspect where those involve play the.... well... game of thrones.  Then there is the Night Watch, where it deals with a group that keeps invaders from the North, which may include savages or supernatural creatures (white walkers).  And finally, it also has the story of the exiled prince and princess, heirs to the deposed King who has the blood of the Dragons.  Although all three settings have different stories, some characters cross over to each other, which we think will eventually end up in one final major climax.  It has drama, conflict and definitely gore.  They don't hesitate showing people getting decapitated, but done with taste.

And the good thing about this is that they don't tell you who the good or bad guy is.  It will make you love the characters or hate them.  Heck, you don't even know who's going to live or die.
