Aether Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 i see a lot of technological and scientific advances being made. its funny that a lot of the time these scientists are interviewed and are always citing start rek as inspiration and that they grew up watching star trek. now thats all well and good but what i want to know is why has everyone seemed to forget the philosophy shown in star trek?? we have all these scientific advances but to what end?? we still have people starving and we still have other unneccesary BS going on that could be helped by new technologies... with great power comes great responsibility. so what we may have warp drives etc. whats the good of exploring space ( / time) if we are going to represent humanity as we are now?? what good will it do us? we should be trying to seriously sort out our philosophical and moral being and uniting as a race before jumping off into space only be to be deemed a bunch of idiots by our ET cousins out there. of course im not saying we should do this just to justify space exploration, im saying it for the good of humankind. i personally think space exploration and travel is a complete watse of time until Sol starts dieing. its like the proverb - never look for happiness outside of yourself. we have a perectly beautiful planet, mother earth that sustains us and we have eachother, that is our immediate problem, lesson, to get on with eachother and respect the earth so we can survive here together in harmony!!! to do this we need less focus on unneccesary things, less religious dogma and more philosphical ethics and spirituality . sorry im just ranting out loud now Peace! *YoungGuyver Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 But we ARE developing in philosophical terms. Anyone that has tried to push forward the philosophy of startrek, and made any real headway into world peace, has been assassinated On the direct forefront, in the political arena, peace is a joke and nothing more than a talking point. The United Nations is a great idea, but has been corrupted so that even it's police agencies have been corrupted into organized crime. In the area where it's supposed to count, we have been disappointed and failed miserably. On the other hand, our social evolution has advanced infinitely due to the advent of the digital age, specifically, thanks to the internet. Ideas used to be spread by word of mouth, and could be silenced easily. The sword and club ruled. Now... "you can't stop the signal". A single idea or fact can spread throughout the world, and close minded communities are struggling to censor thoughts. Religions with false claims have suppressed the rights of various peoples for eons, justifying most any horrendous act for there cause. Now, truth can be spread far more easily. People are reluctant to change, but it slowly does occur. After all, they say that the internet is where religion comes to die. We have a long way to go, but we are getting there. Teetering on the brink of becoming borg one day perhaps, but solving some of our ancient problems too. Our technology is destroying ancient dogmas and the economy. It is destroying the reasons for our primitive barbarism. 1 Quote
*Jess♥ Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 I also say that we are developing in philosophical terms. look around you. all over the world there are various initiatives that are appearing. the philosophy of a free economy that appears in star trek is also finding its way into our society on many fronts. online, there are many artists giving away their work for free. I am involved with a community project aiming to provide a free space for people to go and take part in activities. There are free café's cropping up all over the place and there are 'shops' where there is no barter system, only gifts. we who want such things, we cannot expect them to appear out of thin air, we need to put in a little energy in order to bring these things into our life. i mean, it takes energy to open your eyes for a start. then you need to look in the paper or walk around your town or city. you will find people doing stuff like this. Aether Posted June 1, 2013 Author Posted June 1, 2013 (edited) great stuff. i like both your points. i know we cant do everything perfectly in sequence and change takes time. it just irks me that as a civilisation we seem to have our priorities wrong, thats all. to me it seems the way or order in which we do things is - ''highly illogical'' !! *Jess♥ Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 heh heh, well I forgot to put across my main thought, the main thing I thought when i first read your post. It's down to scientists and scientific thinking to come up with scientific breakthroughs and steps forward in technology. but philosophy... it is not something that can be achieved in the same way. principles of philosophy and culture arise in everyday people and take seed in communities and create new communities. it's not something we can readily see in specific news journals. any of us knows that one person can spout out his own philosophical principles, it doesn't change what you or I do. it's not like a scientific theory that can be proven and tested. It's something that has to be experienced. Quote
*V Guyver Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 Philosophy is argument as to how life functions in society, or should function. Doesn't have to be moral or amoral. It can be religious or the reverse. It doesn't have to serve a purpose, but can function as a goal. People create them because there is lacking concept in why they do things, so they seek one a idea from which they can answer and set up some hypothetical process of methodical loving. Reason and Logic are two separate things, but philosophy is often based on thinking attempting to match it. But it is still not one and the same. Religious Philosophy is an attempt to rationalize ideas that have difficulty resolving in their minds or heart. So it's also different from religion in that we seek out not so much faith, but a view on how we should view or live it aside from just the teachings. Philosophy can be good or bad, we've had great concepts from Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche. Nietzsche's key ideas are incredibly in my view. But people had also twisted his views for their own, attempting to have claim the opposite of what he proposed. His sister and her husband took his work after he died, edited, rearranged, and wrote new material attempting to influence people through his work. The terrible result was Hitler and his supporters in WWII using his work to justify Nazi "philosophy" Quote
