What I don't understand is why believers cling to it with such bloody-minded determination. It has to be true, no matter what. Scary.

to avoid cognitive dissonance.

They have this sign in the front of their mind "I am a christian" and that sign is an identifier of their life purpose.

Anything that is a challenge to that sign, is something to be shot down because that sign is so large, it is something akin to gender identity or career etc.

except they can hold on to it tighter because it is something that can never be taken away. the way the bible is written, it is open to a lot of interpretation. christianity and other religions  have adapted themselves in such a way that they are unclear and vague and so that they cannot be debunked completely depending on context.

people can argue it because it is designed to be a perfect life crutch for those who have lost something else that was very important to them.

Christianity and other religions provide something for a person who has lost everything. they provide family, purpose, reason, structure, among many other things.

great video.

I learned a lot.

Several people have pointed out that religious people have a tendency to gloss over mistakes easier.  I suppose this is why such things and contradictions within the bible, and with it to reality are ignored.  Perhaps this is why excuses are made so easily, as precise accuracy is not important.  Those that claim literal translation and accuracy, can fudge and skew reality to make things fit.

Oh well.  At least they didn't pass that law in South America about executing homosexuals.  The protesting worked; now it's only life imprisonment.  Our religions are SO definitive.

interesting thought....

religion now, is not what it once was.

it used to be a way to control what the people thought, through forced worship.

now the practices of the religion is to prey on  be there for those who are needy and vulnerable and indoctrinate that person by promising them a life purpose.

it seems to me that behind the people of the religion is an underlying 'intent', to self replicate. the religion wants to survive, as a form of rudimentary life form. hmmm... is this what they call meme theory?

The purpose of religions change over time, just as what is being said changes.  The concept always evolve.

For instance, in the Aryan steppes, the chief would sacrifice a cow of his, sharing it with his community to demonstrate his wealth.  This brought HIM closer to the gods, but no one else.  Perhaps the religion was used at this point to make the wealthy share.

Then, chariots were introduced to the region, and people started going on violent raids.  It was adrenaline pumping action, and they vindicated this by pointing out that even the creator god had to be freed through a violent act by Indra.  Religion changed to justify the thrill of violently stealing.

Many people were appalled by the violence, but they could not stand up to the might of the charioteers.  So then, Zororastor comes along (I'm referencing a Karen Armstrong book), and decides the Lord Mazda will come down to wipe out all the wicked people and gods, to restore peace.  and that everyone has a part to play to free Mazda, and that only the pure heart fight for Mazda.  Yes, an apocalypse story that invokes morality, but the first we know of.  Zoroaster realized he wouldn't live long enough to see this upheaval, but predicted a special man would be born to lead lord Mazda's troops.  Though he wasn't called Jesus at the time
