The old Goku Superman thing has always been an interesting topic....

... Once it's given a life of it's own that truly stands out, then it's no longer a real theft of character.

Oh dear V Guyver , thats why i deliberatley avoided pointing out that stuff to Ryuki  ... anyway there is another comparison aswell

also there is the whole planet Vegeta gravity and gravity training thing that is a big deal for Goku gaining strength in the series... supposedly some of supermans strength comes from the fact that Krypton had heavier gravity than earth, the same as the inital reason for the saiyans super strength.

probably it was copying up to the point he expanded on it with the gravity training, then it becomes another example of inspiration for me rather than copying. Toriyama took a concept and ran with it and made it more interesting.

i really like DB Z as there are other esoteric things in there aswell

you make good points about what youre saying, i dont think anyone really hates anything though, its just that i dont think you can take something away from something because of where it originated from, you can doubt its authenticity or its degree of originality but not the fact that its something new in and of itself thats why i was arguing that to me its not really copying its being inspired by.

i think though nowadays somethings do just copy, either through demand created by certain genres or just laziness.

anyway back to other anime i just started yu yu hakusho and im towards the end of Grappler Baki anime (ive been watching this over 2 years and its only 48 eps  ) and im looking forward to reading the manga that continues it... so no spoilers please... i like getting into series late that way theres loads of material to get through

I think the right word we are looking for is "inspired". I mean, great minds have all their ideas come up from something. The Sydney Opera House was inspired from an Orange, so you can't say that the Architect Jorn Utzon copied an orange to design the said structure. There are others that are more obvious than others, but you don't label them as copying.

Posted

oh damn it durendal.

I had gotton over that personal issue... now you brought up all the pain again!!

THAT DAMN OPERA HOUSE!!! COPYING FROM AN ORANGE!!! MAKES ME SO ANGRY!!!

no, I think you can have inspired by, copy of, and rip-off.

i guess you could also have :-

inspired by, heavily inspired by, kinda a copy of, a blatant copy of, bit of a rip off, total rip.

anyway, I think i've seen all of dragonball that has been heavily inspired to naruto...

i got to the underwater cave. the big submarine was also there and so that's the episode i watched last night.

actually, I wouldn't be at all surprised if more stuff happens that makes me think "ah so this is where naruto got that from".

so ok, continuing about things that are like naruto, my friend gave me an anime the other day.

it's called Seirei no Moribito.

I've never heard of it but the animation etc looks very nice.

he also said something about.. i think it was rurouni kenshi?

Posted

Seirei no Moribito is kinda new, sort of. But I have never actually seen it. Rurouni Kenshin on the other hand was really great. Samurai Action about a feared and famous "Man Slayer" that turns out to be a pacifist. It's a great series until after the Kyoto arc which diverged very very far from the manga. I would certainly recommend Rurouni Kenshin but only up until episode 62. Too bad the Jinchuu arc was never animated, and the pitiful excuse of an OVA only showed a few second of that arc. Starting from episode 63, it was an original story which didn't have any character development at all. Never resolved the issue of the characters. Just watch until episode 62 and read the rest in Manga. It's way better, explains a lot of things about the characters history as well as gives closure.

i come across another great source of ispiration for naruto.

a monster named inoshikachou. it took me a moment to cotton on to what hah happened with the name.

i ws looking at it, and i saw ino, shika and chou. ino a wild boar, shika a deer and chou a buttefly. then i thought.. DAMN!! this is a trio of team mates in naruto!! ino, shikamaru and chouji! and i actually remember them being called the inoshikachou team at one point! very cool.

Posted

oh wow! and i just found the inspiration for naruto!!

a fox guy with yellow ears and a tendency to say datteba now and then.

well sure, naruto tends to just use -tteba and usually adds -yo to the end as well, but it's essentially the same thing. and of course the orange t-shirt.

i was looking at him and it was just like looking at a wierd naruto. awesome.

Truth be told, almost every aspect of every anime has different inspirations. The most common that I can always recall is the Yamato no Orochi. It was used incessantly, and I could probably name around 10 anime that used the concept. I don't see anything wrong with this, that is actually where you can see the ingenuity of the Japanese, they improve upon an existing concept.

I'm inclined to think that the inspiration you pointed out may be coincidental. -Dattebayo is rather a unique way of ending a speech, similar to other paterns like -gozaru, -noda, etc, etc. Well, unless we have official statements coming from Mr. Kishimoto himself, all we have are speculations. Who knows, Naruto might be inspired from an Orange.

it seemed too much to be a coincidence.

i just felt like i was watching naruto. but it's not a bad thing.

now i've ascertained how much is 'borrowed' in anime as a general rule, I've moved past it and will approach it more like eether.

i mean... look at that face.

now i never figured out why they draw those kind of whiskers on naruto's face. but when i saw this guy, it made sense.

I thought i would let you guys know that i really love dragonball. after getting quite close to the end and will be watching kai in a few days.

so I just watched goku beat piccolo and become tenkaichi champion.

that fight was absolutely amazing.

I loved prior to that fight when goku took those weights off his body.

it reminded me of rock lee, but in some ways i think it was better. I love the character goku so much he is so playful and it was so awesome to see him bouncing about after taking the weights off.

of course rock lee is better in so many other ways.

well i was so happy to see that, i bought some wrist/ankle weights.

so the fight between piccolo and goku was so cool, i was especially pleased when he said that if piccolo was a bit bigger, he would have trouble with him. i was wondering at that moment if goku had gotten smart enough to pull off some sort of trick and it was great to see that he had!

the last part was the most intense though. when piccolo looked up from that hole and blasted a hole through his chest. that was so shocking, that is two points in this whole anime that totally rocked my world, the first one being kuririn's death. for such a fun and innocent anime, it was really striking.

so i was very shocked to see him get injured so badly by piccolo, it was all so emotional, I was hyperventilating! the last time i breathed like that was the first time i went in a plane.

so anyway, now goku is finally the champion of tenkaichi budokai.

not sure what'll happen in these last 5 episodes but i am certainly glad i watched this anime.

thanks for giving me those additional pushes guys :)

cool. so now you understand what all the fuss was about? well you must if it got you hyperventilating  ... it will be interesting to hear how you rate the continuation of dragonball / z / kai as it switches gear a bit.

if you dont want to suffer waiting dont watch kai too fast, theres still 21 eps left to air!!unless you get DBZ and watch all the fillers- but judging by the last time i looked at the naruto thread you wont be doing that :)

after watching about 20 episodes of dragonball kai, I'm not sure if it was a good idea.

I'm wondering if it would have been better to watch dragonball z.

you see, the voice actors are different and the music is different.

I realise they have had to make necessary changes, but I really miss the atmosphere.

but then of course.. I remind myself that the filler materials would drive me crazy. after all, I have looked at a couple of instances where 5 episodes of dragonball z are condensed into one episode of kai.

I wish they could have gotten the original soundtrack minus the music so that they could re-edit with the original voices and without the music jarring. then put the original tracks along with the action.

that's not to say the new music isn't good. it is very cool in places. it just feels like a different anime. odd.

Posted (edited)

hmm interesting... i really havent watched any of kai yet. i didnt realise that they had added new music aswell? seems pointless. just looked and they even changed the balls and ep title music?? shame.

yes the music of DB / Z is classic and does really enhance the feeling and atmosphere of it all... ive watched DB in english and japanese + Z in english 2 or 3 times + twice in Japanese and the japanese is infinitley better, in no small part because of the atmosphere that the music gives it.

that was one thing that peed me off about the eng dub of Z, the music kind of sucks, which is a shame because to me DB Z was the last semi decent dub of a long TV series that ive seen, the voices fitted the characters to some degree esp. vegeta and piccollo.. the small amount of bleach i saw was atrocious normal american voices and the eng dub Naruto voices are the biggest pile of crap ive heard!!- absolutely no attempt at matching voices to characters .

all i can say about filler is that ignorance is bliss..( and in the case of Shippuuden my masochistic method of being 20 eps behind and not reading the manga is still paying off ,im still enjoying it , i am aware of how theres about 1 second of manga in each episode nowadays though???? )

there are instances in Z where its ridiculous but when you have all episodes to hand you can just watch them asap i.e not have to wait weeks on end to get to the next plot progression, and even miss pointless bits out -like the garlic jnr saga.

actually you know i just looked at a filler guide for DBZ - again apart from obvious parts like the garlic jnr saga (12 eps) i didnt know what was filler and what wasnt - i never cared- and to be honest i think the niches they put into the anime enhance it a little as there seems to be a lot of minor incidents not present in the manga that help pad the anime out nicely. dont get me wrong though, the beginning of Z is a waste of time but its kind of the calm before the storm and there are somethings between arcs, and certain whack scenes within arcs that slow things up , but i think they are quite obvious in most cases and could be skipped.

i still look forward to watching Kai , but like i said before 291 eps of Z , 100 of kai = 191 eps of filler??? really??

anyway i'll shut up!!

I am enjoying dbkai though.

i think it was a bit jarring at first, voices i don't know, music that doesn't fit with the previous series.

I think the start was a bit boring really. because of the fact I did not know the voices, the characters seemed alien to me and so when they went straight into fighting and action, I didn't feel any progression. it felt a little dull. I had no enjoyment of the fight between picollo goku and raditz, no joy at the fight between everyone, nappa and vegeta.

I think i would have been better off watching dragonball z at that point.

i saw a clip with gohan and a butterfly. that looked like a much better introduction to gohan.

anyway, now I got to the bits with planet namek. this s much better and has some good character development.

i was a bit shocked about what they did with that pink guy. of all the crimes that they could represent in an anime, that has to be the worst?

murdering children is the most worst of crimes for sure

so that was where it has started to pick up.

i think i want to watch dragonball z. maybe i'll watch it after kai. maybe i'll switch. maybe i'll make do.

Posted (edited)

yeah well z or kai its gonna be cool...

funny isnt it - a lot of people will like the fact theres no filler or additional substance at the beginning of kai, but it sounds like you would have appreciated it to ease into it all. its a double edge sword because if i remember rightly in Z theres considerable build up to vegeta and nappa arriving, maybe too much, but it might have built the occasion more. i remember the fights more than the events inbetween but that fight was great at the time i first saw it, and Goku vs Vegeta even more so. i think the only words are freakin awesome for that one.

the namek saga and other sagas that follows up to the end of the whole planet namek arc are awesome, obviously it's all cool, but i think its the best part of DB in my opinion

i think it's gonna be like a rush to see this 'super saiyan' thing whatever that is all about.

i'd like to take it slower but another part of me wants to get to that part quickly to see what it is all about.

I've found an archive of DBZ anyhow, I'll get some of that and try it to see how i feel about it. if I find that it is dragging a lot, I can check episode guides and switch to DB kai for a few eps or whatever.

Posted (edited)

 well, i cant blame you for wanting to know about the whole super saiyan thing...i suppose for years youve heard people bangin on about super saiyans!!- or super saiyajins to be precise. i remember there was a time when i didnt even know that ss goku was goku i thought they were 2 different dudes!!! i used to get ahold of DBZ merchandise b4 i'd even seen any of Z i just thought it looked cool, but when i finally got to see the whole story in english and the build up to it, it was even cooler.

thinkin of it i'd seen a lot of scenes from dragonball z from trading cards and idol cards n stuff b4 i saw the actual show! i even saw most of the android and cell saga in cantonese way b4 i saw anything in english as i had a chinese friend at school who i used to lend tapes off  hmm i think i was a little obsessed with it :hearts:

btw..this is the guide i looked at http://dragonball.wikia.com/wiki/Filler i only skimmed through, however im not sure it would be a great help for missing eps as it tells you about events rather than ep numbers. might be interestng to look at after you've seen it all? DB's on there aswell.

man, it was absurd back around the turn of the year 2,000. The internet was filled with nothing butt DBZ geeks sprouting their love for Dragon Ball Z character and rampaging around AOL like maniacs too, with nonestop DBZ avatars and phrases. The internet felt so alien to me as a result early on as a result. Everything afterwords has been a piece of cake for me.

I remember trying to RP as a guyver character back then too. Only for some guy playing a Dragon Ball Z character come in and say that he kill us all, and start stating how he can destroy entire planets with his pinky. It was a pretty unfair thing XD

oh wow.

i didn't realise there ws any filler in dragonball.

I had heard people complain about dragonball z, mostly about moves taking a whole episode.

so since nobody seems to complain about dragonball, I didn't even imagine for a moment that any of that was filler material.

In this case, I think i prefer to have the filler.

I cannot imagine how dragonball would have been without those parts.

I think they add pacing to it.

I just got episode 1 of dragonball z this morning and watched it.

i loved it so much more than kai.

it just felt right.

it's ironic. I always kept away from dragonball because of the bad reputation that Z has. now i watched it because i heard that kai fixed the major issues of z. and now that i have watched up to this point, I have found that i would prefer to watch the one i had avoided all that time.

man, it was absurd back around the turn of the year 2,000. The internet was filled with nothing butt DBZ geeks sprouting their love for Dragon Ball Z characters..

well none of those geeks were me  i didnt have the net till about 2003?..im talking about 1993-94, i had no access to anything other than what was in the odd magazine, my comic shop in the nearest city and an asian friend... those times were exciting because any morsal of anime / manga was so cool to find as it came down to rarity and £, all this was before the CN eng dub was shown in the UK, the US publiction explosion of manga titles and before the internet revolution ...

I remember trying to RP as a guyver character back then too. Only for some guy playing a Dragon Ball Z character come in and say that he kill us all...

i remember arguing in a fist of the north star/ hokuto no ken forum once about ken vs. goku it's like yeah ken is the hardest human ever but he'd get owned by Goku, because

the dude is a walking nuke!!!!!

 sorry about my DB musings its just funny to look back on how it was a part of my life growing up and how things are different with manga now

oh wow.

i didn't realise there ws any filler in dragonball....

irony a.k.a sod's law  ( you do have 'sods law' in cymru right?)

like ive said filler never bothered me because mostly i was ignorant to it ... i have got DB in tankubon (not Z though) but i think i read it before i saw the DB anime and so forgot intricacys and didnt compare it as i just enjoyed the anime .

i guess theres a fine line of filling that should be tread and in some cases / animes they just go too far

as long as they dont do stuff totally off canon like people growing another head or having sex changes or other equally obtuse things i dont really care. ;)

well i hope however you decide to watch z/ kai /the continuation of dragonball it lives up to the hype!!

the fillers in DBZ, actually helped to explain a few things at the time. like who created the androids (before Dr.Gero was credited as their canon creator) amongst other things. Most anime have fillers, the exceptions are those based on out of print Manga, and original series like Geass. However, so many are manga based on currently running Manga, that they usually end up having to use fillers at one point or another.

I think the only Manga based Anime I've seen so far that hasn't had a filler in it was Hajime No Ippo. Actually, they removed some parts of the Manga during the animated series, like when two characters protected a tire that their friend was using to train for a life changing fight from hoodlums... weird why they did that. But even they had to pull a trick ot extend the series. They stopped it, then relaunched it all over again with new awesome animation and retold the plot. It was actually cool to see a well done anime get brought back, and better then ever. This is of course on a monthly based series, which in turn is likely how they would bring the Guyver Anime back if the studio's ever chose to pick it up again.

Posted

You know what anime never had fillers? Hunter X Hunter. They even had to cut short the anime when the story had already caught up with the manga, and later released the episodes as OVA. Also, Yuyu Hakusho doesn't seem to have any fillers.

Posted (edited)

i still wish they would have just reanimated DB Kai. they more or less reanimated it anyway from the old cells just for 16x9 and they obviously tweeked the colour.. why??

some of that old stuff is done by different anime studios and its so blatant in parts, they should have redone it all in the opening credits style with the original music and just used the old dialogue.

did anyone see that DBZ special a couple of years back? it looked sweeet, slightly crap story but it looked awesome.

:G1:

i hope if they did pick up guyver again they didnt reanimate from the beginning, it would be like the manga all over again -gets picked up by one company rerelesed then another company releases it n we get no further in the story. the tv series was cool because it redid the oavs and got further in the plot, so any new guyver anime really needs to start where the tv series left off. i neeeeed to see the XD animated!!!!!!! :ggxd:
