despite the fact this being the second longest running Manga ever ( at 110 tankobons!!!) I had never read or seen any of it until the 2012 tv series came out... and I was instantly hooked... this is old skool manga / anime how it should be up there with hokuto no ken DBZ and Guyver IMHO.

I certainly maintain that view for the first 2 parts, Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency... I watched the OAVS of stardust crusaders but was somewhat jaded by the awesomeness of the production of the 2012 series,,, but now Stardust crusaders has been reanimated and is currently being aired  (however I haven started watching it yet though)

what I wanted to ask if anyone had read the whole series so far, or more than i?

I have just finished part 4 Diamond is unbreakable and was less than impressed as it just didn't go anywhere- it might be because theres no Dio, no ripple, etc. but im not sure,,,,so I want to know is the rest of the series as different as part 4 or does it get better again?? I mean its on part 8 now so it cant be that bad right???

I've read all of it, well, until Stone Ocean (Part 6).  Didn't quite like how they portrayed Jotaro as a secondary character seeing that he was the one who finally kicked Dio's @$$ and ended the family curse (sort off).  I agree that Stardust Crusaders is one of the best seeing that is the part where they introduce the stand.  There were a lot of funny moments and the fight scenes were certainly great.

Part 4 was not so good to me, since I feel this is more of a side story.  Part 5 was ok, as we are dealing with Dio's (sort of) offspring, Giorno Giovanna.  I'm somewhat staying away from part 7 & 8, as this is set in an alternate timeline.

Thanks Durendal... glad its not just me who thought part 4 was a bit off...

to be honest I liked the ripple stuff better than the stands. the stand is a good concept and spices things up from standard fighting ii suppose, but  I just loved part 1 and 2 and the ripple was a big part of that!!

(as a side thought I just want to comment out of all the medicos action figures produced for this title why is there no jonathan joestar???!!!!!!!!)

part 7 and 8 are an alternate timeline? hmm they can be a bit awkward... I had assumed they were just set in the future or something to continue on the lineage, but anyway...

i'll give part 5 and 6 a go  and see what I think.

Part 7, Steel Ball Run, was supposedly not part of the story, and it's about a western version of Joestar and speedwagon.  A re-imagining so to speak.  And then one day, they just decided to slap it as Part 7.  And now Part 8 is a continuation of Steel Ball Run.

The SBR universe was created as a result of the events in Part 6: Stone Ocean. And it's Joestar and Zeppeli, not Speedwagon. Personally, I enjoyed part 4 more than some of the other Parts. Kira was a great villain with an awesome stand. I liked Jotaro taking on a more mentorish role in part 4 and his involvement in Part 6.  Part 5 was blah. Giorno was a bland JoJo though that may have been a part of the crappy translation job on that part of the manga though I liked Bruno. Steel Ball Run is a great read, there's a lot of character development for Johnny and Gyro. Hell, even the main villain is somewhat sympathetic. Plus, one of the Stand users can turn into a goddamn dinosaur, how is that not cool? That alone should make you want to read Steel Ball Run.

Ah, so no Speedwagon in SBR?  Well, that sounds kinda off.  He's supposed to be in every generation of the Joestar family.  I guess this series caters to different types of readers.  I can probably say that I never got to read SBR because I never really finished Stone Ocean.  After part 3, the series has never really been the same.

The Speedwagon Foundation is mentioned in SBR, but we don't see any members of the Speedwagon family nor do we know if they're still alive.

well from what you are both saying it does seem that way, which is a big shame really...im still going to give it a go though...

I will say that part 4 isn't all that bad, its just very different to 1-3... yeah Kira was cool, but it was all the other pointless characters and little episodes along the way (like the chef and the beautician etc.) that got tiresome for me, and made it an effort to get to the end...

kind of like 3x3 eyes, I enjoyed the overall story but just so many little jaunts and mini stories that were pointless! - Just get on with the story!!!! I wonder if this is where the concept of ''filler'' was introduced into anime!! lets stick some crap in to bore people - except anime filler isn't even written by the author!...

ive now read part 5 - Vento Aureo  and what a pleasant surprise after the kind of pointless part4

the adventure of Giorno Giovani was like bill and ted's - EXCELLENT!!!

it did something and went somewhere and wasn't pointless, i really enjoyed it...

this has me wondering what they will do with the TV series - will it continue after part3 ?? I cant see part 4 doing aswell but it would be a shame not to animate part 5 as its so much better...but I cant see them skipping part 4... guess we'll just wait and see

I'm watching the second season right now. The first was awesome, especially the first episode witch was so filled with events - it's like to watch the whole season in just one episode. And the second part of the first season was hilarious because of the new protagonist not being serious.

It seems that I was misinformed about the anime.  I thought that the new anime started with stardust crusader and not with Jonathan Joestar, which prompted me to avoid this immediately.  I've had enough of the poorly made OAV so I avoided this.  Looks like they started with Phamtom Blood.  Might be interesting to see how they animate this.  Considering that part 1 and 2's artwork in the manga differ substantially from part 3.
