I like that idea were they almost go into time stasis in between waiting for results but what does knacker that idea is what about the home world and the war which is always brewing. Unless when they went back home they went back to the 'Time' they left. Almost like our planet was a time stasis laboratory they went to. I think our driving force will only have to propel us for another few decades. Any further development then comes from the creation of a sufficiently powerful AI. Many scientists have now said when we develop a self aware self replicating computer that can improve on it's successors, it will be the last invention we will have to make as it will take up the mantle of generating new technological breakthroughs without our interference. This deserves a topic of it's own I could ream off on exponential technology trends till the cows come home!
