well its an idea i had while doing my ranma/guyver story and i thought about gargoyles and decided to use them in the story though i am at the moment just using the females to add a bit of a twist as you don't have female zoanoids though i think you do have flyers.

but the question here is should they be created by chronos at some lab in either the states or in japan or maybe somewhere else?

or should they be a project left over from the advent either kept in a processing pod or having suvived in some part or parts of the world?

From what I understand Gargoyles are much older than Chronos, so I would think they are left over zoanoids from Advents or decendents of them.

so would the character either finding a small group of gargoyles in processing pods on a advent ship thats buried like most ships are but are not linked to any clan that have survived down the ages.

or him coming into contact with a group in the wilds like in china.

though i was gunning for the pods myself as it would add a twist as if they were in the final stages of being improved maybe minorly.

though with the stone sleep if they choose to they could remain in that state till they are awoken, lets them live for a very long time, besides those that go about in human for to interact without causing themselves problems, and build themselves a form of protection.

or it could be both the main character could find one lot when he find the g-unit as the plan was a nearly dead relic with a female group of gargoyles in the pods which he gets the unit and frees the group from the pods.

then later say in both america and china there being like you said two groups gaurding a relic or temple maybe a temple with a relic under neath it though i am not sure what could be in the relic but then they could be doing what they were last ordered to do.

but keeping hidden so they can go about in their battle forms while some on the outside world would gather money and such like a compony but also hid the temple and such from people from finding it?

Hmm, so you don't actually want to use the Gargoyles but Gargoyle like zoanoids?

Well then it entirely depends what background story you want. . . if you go the temple route then you'll have to account for the Gargoyle legends and also consider it's been translated that the Creators left only 10,000 years ago in the official Manga.

Maybe have it they co-exited but at some point the regular humans became too afraid of them and activated some failsafe that forced them into their stone state until modern times when something de-activated the failsafe and allowed them to wake up.

You can either then forget about the stone state or keep it as a limiting factor that forces them to become stone during day to recover energy.

For the Disney Gargoyles for example this explained why they didn't have to literally eat a whole cow every day to recover the energy needed for flying, etc. also it served to help heal them and slowed their aging so they lived twice as long as humans.

On the plus side that means you can make them a little stronger than normal zoanoids but also means they don't have human forms. . . or if you want them to be able to turn into humans then forget the stone state but don't make them any more powerful than standard zoanoids. . .
