RazorLaser Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 The discussion thread for the Guyver in English petition seems to have been deleted, so I'm starting a new one. To my understanding (without the wiki to help me) is that Guyver has been published 3 times, to an extent. Viz Comics, Star Comics and Chuang Yi Publishing. I'm not sure which volumes Viz and Star made it up to, but I know Chaung Yi released 10 volumes before going into liquidation. We have the petition on the board, but I don't think that's helping our cause at all. So, without knowing where the license for Guyver currently stands... What haven't we tried? Have we as a collective tried e-mailing other publishing companies about picking it up? There's plenty out there, and I'm sure at least one of them would love to get there hands on it. The other thing I had in mind was crowdfunding (Kickstarter, Pozible etc). Not sure exactly what we can do with it, but let's use this thread to throw some ideas around, because we desperately need our beloved Manga to be released in English! 2 Quote
LordSpleach Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Well, I know Viz went to volume 7 and Chuang Yi stop at volume 10. I've sent petition to a couple of publishers a few years back but never got any word. Same with sending letters to Funimation about airing the 2005 series on network cable. I know we have discussed the Kickstarter option but we don't any publishing rights let alone contact with Takaya's publisher or editors to work out a deal. Unfortunately, I never heard of Takaya using any form of social media, or having a fan e-mail. So I'm at a loss. 1 Quote
Sully Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 (edited) The English petition is still stick'ed and around.. but as for the discussion about it, it's being a long time since someone wanted to talk about Guyver in English so that thread is probably buried itself a long time ago and there is no point in necro'ing as we might as well keep it fresh. The petition itself does help. it shows there are people willing to buy the manga, the issue is this board is not the companies own messageboard. We've a perfect storm in Guyver where the English speaking fans don't have an easy means of communication with the people who produce it. Guyver is very much an old school Anime so we've no Twitter feeds, official Facebook etc that goes back to the people we actually care to hear from which is the producer of the story. Kickstarter isn't a go as we do not have the rights to Guyver, and to get any costs a large sum of money and would come with conditions that if not fulfilled would involve you and your group losing the rights. Personally I think sticking with traditional idea is bad, which is can we re-produce Takaya's Guyver in English and see what happens. Why? Because it has already failed once and at the height of Guyvers 12 part Manga published run couldn't stay running.... don't get me wrong but Viz's run overall at the time compared to other comics of the day looked like a shoddy run operation with covers not matching the content inside compared to the Marvel and DC run competition. The first time I saw a Guyver comic it was dull as hell compared to the loveliness of a fully colored run of X-Man Age of Apocalypse. So whatever we want has to live with competition and SELL. Which means as I personally feel is we need a company to do more than just republish Takaya's work. Personally I think IDW would be a good company to take it on and do one important thing for long term fans to be interested. Do there own Guyver story at the same time as releasing the Japanese volumes in English. Give us something fresh, continue the Dark Hero story for example instead in comic form. http://www.idwpublishing.com/idw-establishes-new-licensing-division-idw-international/ This is like Spiderman for me, I'm not in the mood to see Sho AGAIN become the Guyver. P.S. There would be nothing I'd like more to stop the scanlation project because we finally have Guyver being published properly in English in the US and UK market. I'd personally buy it all up without a second thought. But for the purpose of this discussion I'm being realistic. Not everyone would do it just for the sake of owning Guyver in English. I also want to finally see a properly thought out publication of Guyver in English, and something a lot better than what VIz did. Star Comics and Chuang Yi do not count because Star Comics = Italian (I think?) and Chaung Yi was limited to Asia if not less, it was a pain to get and not publised in the USA or UK Markets.
