Hey all, havent posted in a while and well..got bored i suppose. Anyways, since this is the fanart section i thought it would be the best place to ask an art question...though if it isn't my fullist apologies.

So, as the subject says...Details. I suck at it. I'm decent when it comes to doing the basic body (save females :( ), but when it comes to detail my brain falls apart. I suppose it also has to do with the fact that i have a hard time creating from the mind. Does anyone have any ideas on what i can practice that would help me with such a predicament?

Thanks

There's a couple of things you could get to help you. First off,kit yourself out with a few art books, things like 'The Art Of Drawing Manga' by Ben Krefta or 'Manga Mania:How to Draw Japanese Comics' by Christopher Hart could be of use,and the 'visual data files' are apparently very useful to any Guyver artist. Hope this is helpful,

Kris

As Gall said, referances help. My biggest advice?

Practice. I cannot stress that enough. Practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice. Then when you think you're done practicing, practice some more.

Art is a never-ending learning experiance, so practicing is the only way you're really going to get good. Referances are good, but they don't teach you how to draw or develope a style that is uniquly you. Only you can do that for yourself.

Start off simple, then eventually, over the years, get more complex. You've already got the basic body shape, so that's a good start. Perhaps try adding shadows, like the ones under cheek bones, or hiding half a face. Practicing dramatic shadows on the body can help develope your sense of curvature and hidden crevaces, while at the same time look very cool and mysterious. after that you can start working on wrinkles and ageing, and all sorts of skin details. But then again, this is just my opinion, and I don't like to work too hard past the dramatic shadows. Ooooo, mysterious. Man I'm lazy.

If you're having trouble puting details in then think about the type of character you are trying to create. for example if it is a mean nasty character think about all the mean and nasty characters you've seen. look at mean and nasty things like spiders. what i usually do when making a character is to break it down into smaller bits. so i would look at just his shoulders and design that. then the face and so on. also put some mean and nasty music on. if inspiration is what you need then find some. like the other guys said find a cool anime book or whatever. if it's the actual finished product that youre stuck on then the smaller bits like shoulders etc should be there in front of you so you know exactly what your putting down.

One thing is for sure, no-one can just draw a picture without already knowing what it is they are going to draw.
