RDJ as Doom?

Recommended Posts

Just saw the news that RDJ is going to be Doom in the 2 avengers movie.  What do you guys think about RDJ playing Doom?  I for one would prefer they cast an unknown for the role.  I mean, I don't hate RDJ, he's actually a very good actor, he really deserves that Oscar.  But I see this as a wasted opportunity.  Not to mention that RDJ has a hefty price tag.  I know that Marvel's casting has always been spot on, but this just doesn't feel right.  I feel that this is a big risk to RDJ.  He is a big draw for audiences, but if the movie fizzles, that's going to hurt his career more (as if he still needs that with all that money he has).

Haha, Tropic Thunder.  I still don't understand why people are so offended by this.  It's a fricking parody.  In any case, I'm sure RDJ will do a great job, like he said there, he's a dude playing a dude that's playing another dude.  But I certainly wish that Marvel is trolling us, because it would have been dope if Cillian Murphy was cast as Doom instead and simply using the bait and switch with RDJ.  Doom and Stark did have a history in the comics where they switched roles, so maybe that's where this is going?

I do think it's an act of desperation on Marvel's part, but that being said, I can dig it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-OYKd8SVrI

If that's desperation, does that mean they don't trust Ryan Reynolds?  Like Deadpool said, he is Marvel Jesus, and his movie just revived the MCU.  In just 3 days, his movie already exceeded the entire box office run of the previous Marvel movie.  It's not superhero fatigue, it's just poor writing.  So no matter who they cast as Doom, as long as they present it to be palatable to the fans, I'm sure it will be a success.  And unlike other villains, I actually respect Doom and rooting for him.

The early MCU excelled in folding things elegantly into one another.

The Infinity Gems were also famous items of power, such as the Eye of Agamotto, the Cosmic Cube and Vision's solar gem.

Antman's nemesis Darren Cross was an amalgamation of no less than four characters: the original Darren Cross, Yellowjacket, Egghead and Ultron.

Ivan Vanko was like a fusion of Whiplash, the Crimson Dynamo and Titanium Man.

I don't know how up you are on Doctor Doom, but he kind of makes more sense as an evil version of Iron Man.

Makes sense as an evil version of Iron Man? Yes. Surely. Toss in some Dr. Strange magic, and he is practically comics Doom.

But he is not Tony Stark. And RDJ is and forever should be Tony Stark... The man who literally started this all off.

The sheer idea of RDJ playing Doom baffles me. It makes no sense to me how... and I am sure they are going to try their best to make it make sense... But I still don't buy it.

Granted, I was also not thrilled about Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards either... I get he is the "it" guy right now, but he just doesn't fit... And I am kind of sick of him at this point. He's in too much.

It has been established that Marvel have retconned Dr. Doom many times, and one of my favorite iterations is his relationship with Valeria Richards.  It clearly shows that despite his megalomaniac tendencies, he has a softer side when it comes to Valeria.  This highlights Doom's multifaceted nature beyond being a villain, which I believe is what the MCU needs as the big bad.  Kang is just a conquerer and I don't see myself rooting for him, unlike Thanos, being the main villain, despite trying to wipe out half the universe, turns our he was actually trying to save it.  Doom is a very tricky character and he will either make or break the future of the MCU.   I really do hope they do Justice to Doom.

I'm also in the opinion not liking Pedro Pascal as Reed.  I mean, he was great in Game of Thrones and definitely good as the Mandalorian.  In fact, I love him in his movie with Nick Cage.  But I just can't see him as the intellectual type (probably because I've seen him goofy too many times).  Marvel's casting has always been questionable but they always tend to pull it off.  I do hope they also pull it off this time.

I was 'WTF" when I heard they took Pedro as Reed Richards. Love the guy, I think he's great... but Reed Richards?

RDJ complained in the past that playing Iron Man has skewed his acting style. Maybe this is a good opportunity to show he can do more than quirky-funny.

I am very much rooting for this to succeed

Been thinking about this more.

Not much would be needed to set Tony Stark on a path to Doom, would there?

I mean... just remove Ho Yinsen. (Wait, no. then the shrapnel kills him before he can build the armor.)

Well... maybe have his attitude be slightly different. Like he says "Avenge me" or something.

Yeah, if you're saying that Doom is just a Tony Stark without morals, we already have that in Superior Iron Man.  But then Tony Stark's morals in the comics has always been questionable for me.  I'm definitely sure RDJ can act differently. how else would he have won an Emmy, a Golden Globe and an Oscar?
