Help with getting into Gundam

Recommended Posts

As far as I understand it, Newtypes are the "new type" of humans who have evolved due to their migration of space.  This is what Zeon Zum Deikun has been advocating, which the Zabi family twisted.  But newtypes are not the Deux Ex Machina of the franchise (to some degree), as even the strongest Newtype ends up tragically.  They are mentioned most of the time because of how they are very good pilots, but the only time that they manifest physically is during critical events.  One example is by Amuro from Char's Counterattack.  You'll have to watch that to see what I mean.

Z Gundam explores the newtypes in more detail as they introduced the enhanced humans, people who are made into newtypes artificially, though with some psychological side effect.

Speaking of Z Gundam, one of the reasons why I liked it so much is also because of the second opening theme.  Mizo no Hoshi e Ai wo Komete was also composed by Neil Sedaka.  Celebrating Gundam's 40th anniversary, the original singer of the song will release an album covering various songs from the Gundam Franchise.  Here is one of the re-arranged version:

Despite her age, Moriguchi Hiroko is still lovely as ever.

Thanks for the info, its not something that would have ruined the series for me but it good to know it’s not going to turn into something overly predictable either.

Im really liking toward to Zeta but that’s going to a little ways off. Sine I’m following the U.C. timeline in rough chronological  order I won’t be watching it till September.

After 0079, my copy of 08th MS Team showed up and I finished it at the weekend. Currently watching MS IGLOO. The series on the August hit list are Thunderbolt, War in the Pocket and Star Dust Memory.

That's actually a good choice if you want to know more about the UC universe in general.  Skip to Z Gundam only if you are interested in the rivalry between Amuro and Char.  0083 actually leads directly to Z Gundam.  Animation-wise, 0083 is top notch as even my brother who is not interested in Anime whatsoever really liked 0083.

Perhaps you meant poor Four?  I never really found the story of Puru and Puru 2 to be tragic.  Probably because at how lighthearted they wanted to portray Gundam ZZ.   I know it's supposed to be spelled Ple, but that just sounds awful.  I like it spelled Puru better, probably Plu, but not Ple.  It's like saying someone's name as bleh.

I thought it was very tragic how a young teenage girl plus her clones with zero life experience were viewed and treated as nothing more than control modules for killing machines, losing their mind and their life in the process.

And - in case you didn't know - Elpy's name is derived from 'Lemon People', a magazine unabashadly aimed at hebephiles. Ah, Japan. Hence "Elpeo Ple" - "L-people".

Cloning, inhuman experiments, weapon development, people driven to insanity... This is sounding better and better.

I actually did not know that.  Wow, you learn something new every day.

so i enjoy the non uc gundam series more, except for g. g was my first gundam series after watching wing, (and i never cared for dbz) and it was nothing like i expected. so i was biased against it because it reminded me of dbz.

Wing is by far my favorite, followed by 00. I also really liked Seed and how it was like a remastered version of mobile suit gundam.  08th mobile suit team was just amazing to watch, i liked it more than i did the orginial series. victory was hard for me to watch  and recoqniso or whatever.... no.  just no. i got 4 episodes and just had to stop.

i was a bit surprised at iron blood orphans. the ending was a bit too gundam for me tho. lol.. and age was.... age was just like a kids version of gundam for me.

but what i truly loved was the 1st 2 build gundam series.  build gundam divers, while a great idea at first, lost its pazaa for me after a few episodes.

Yeah, the plot of G really gets overshadowed by the super level of fighting. It is one of my favorites, but it's because I block out a lot of the fighting garbage

Wing is alright is my book, and 00 ranks up as one of my favorites ( despite season 2's shortcomings).

08th MS team is great, likely due in part to its briefness. Really helps the story and animation.

IBO is definitely unique... But that ending... So bad.

AGE is hit and miss with a lot of fans... With some liking certain parts, but not others. In the end, I thought it was very "meh" in the story... but the mecha designs were great.

Build Fighters is superb ( you'd never believe you could get so worked up about 2 kids fighting with their toys) and Build Fighters Try tried change up the formula, and was hit and miss in places... but mostly hit. Divers... Well, it's the opposite of Try... Hit and miss... but mostly miss.

The new one that is coming later this year seems to be more based on Divers... So I am not expecting much.

But as for Seed, yeah I liked the first season a lot ( also lots of the designs I really like), but Seed Destiny is such a train wreck of poor writing/decision making that it's pretty much inexcusable.

Got to say the more I hear about G Gundam the more I look forward to it. A series that’s a fusion of Gunam, super robots, Dragon Ball and Street Fighter sounds right up my alley. Even all this talk of lots of fighting sounds good to me as I could watch battles all day. I blame dbz for that, I can watch nothing but fighting for ages. I’ll likely watch G November time, I plant to have watched Char’s Counter Attack and Unicorn by then which should give me some solid grounding in the spirit of gundam.

If you like the fighting in G and are able to pick up on the other plot lines, then it really shines.

Got Zeta Gundam yesterday and my goodness dose this show start strong. While the original MSG was really good, Zeta is like the imago to the originals larval state.

While I expected the series to be more gray with its sides in the conflict, I was totally taken off guard by the Titans’s brutality and immorality. Them beating up Bright Noa was hard to watch and they seem to only get worse from there.

Yep. It's the reason I dislike Zeta, despite some may others who love it.

But it does really make you believe that they need to be stopped, despite the Feddies having the general moral high ground after all the garbage Zeon pulled during the OYW.

And if you think that tonal shift is bad... Just wait for Double Zeta...

The MRX-009 Psycho Gundam

Also just when you think the Titans couldn’t get any scummier, the creation of the Cyber-Newtypes is an all new low.

However they make them clearly has a very negative impact on their psyche. And to make matters worse they make them pilots machines that appear to put an even greater strain on them.

To quote a certain killer doll “I don't know whether to kill him or take notes.”

Built this guy. In preparation watched a lot of Gundam I had not seen before, specifically The Origin, IGLOO, 8th MS Team, War in the Pocket and Thunderbolt. All very good and highly recommended.

Also watched the compilation movies of the original show but that was not so good.

And now I have finally started in on 'Victory'. Also, tomorrow I am watching 'Gundam Zeta - A new translation'.

I actually fell asleep binge watching V a decade ago.  Can't remember if it's because I got bored, or was just tired.  After the experience, I never put the effort to watch it again.  Although I know the gist of it, still wasn't interesting enough for me to rewatch it.

I'm wondering what the next iteration of Gundam would be.  I found Re:Rise to be wanting.  Maybe I should start watching Reconquista in G?  Or even Turn Away Gundam?

New Gundam series is out.  Witch from Mercury.  So far I like it.  It has some parallels with Revolutionary Girl Utena, but I'm still enjoying it nonetheless.  I'm also surprised that this has come out in Netflix.  Although not so surprising since Hathaway's Flash streamed in Netflix as well only a month after it's premier.  Can't wait for part 2.

I haven't watched it yet... But like the previous attempt... G-Reco... I don't like the character designs or the outfits designs of the characters... The mecha designs look decent though, so I will still be giving it a chance. Waiting until I get 3 episodes built up to watch all 3 and see if it makes sense at all... Unlike G-Reco...

But also, old man who doesn't like a lot of newer tropes/trends with series (ie no longer the generation things are made for)... so... oh look! A cloud for me to yell at!

I actually don't consider G-reco as Gundam.  Design-wise, the mech looks kinda goofy.  Also, I wonder why I don't like the AU iterations of Gundam wherein Tomino is involved.  I didn't like G-Reco and  I most certainly don't like Turn A, or Turn Away as I like to call it.  Is there some reason why he wants to connect everything to UC?  I think he did better when he was still known as kill-em-all Tomino.
